      That makes good sense.
In my opinion, you dont wait for the right oportunity. You try to create the oportunity. Or alternatively, deal as best you can with whatever stuation that is presented.
If you want to land a wrist lock... then headbutting the target in the face, or kicking his leg out, or shoulder bumping him off balance... seem like much better ways to make him compliant.
Rather than only going for the wrist, and hoping for the best.
And that wont take several years to learn.
I think a more common problem is that people get to caught up on the idea of a single technique, making or breaking everything.
Rather than think of ways to put that particular technique into an effective context.

To perform a wristlock you have to quickly slap the palm in a sideways motion while simultaneously trapping the hand briefly while rotating it and step to the side, with your opponent being rotated in the direction where he's facing away from you before you perform the lock. Anybody whose experienced at working the doors or being a bouncer knows this.

What I really really really really like about this channel, at 52 years old is how he focuses on where are we going with this fight. Let's get the heck out of here. Is there anybody who has ever been caught up in a fight that they never initiated but they won the fight and then later got charged with assault? Maybe the 10 days in jail? Because they didn't understand the concept of Duty to retreat versus the castle doctrine or whatever? There are some really good martial arts channels on the TH-cam but this is the only guy who consistently says learn to get out do you strike and then run like hell and that's what I really like about this channel no power trip just get out of danger zone. Wristlocks are mainly for retaining control of your weapon when you've got a baton or a knife and he grabs it (or your wrist) to stop your attacks. Also, you should drop your elbow to initiate the movement.

I generally like your stuff. And you're somewhat right by saying it takes practice. But the reason the technique isn't working is because you're resisting his power. It's all about blending with the others energy to overcome it. I don't like putting more distance for him to hit you again.

Average thug/ bad guy isnt trained. They will not know to squeeze hard or whatever easy but specific defense exist. They will move their hand back, to the side, try to wrangle it out instead. They might eventually resort to that squeeze, but your lock should take place in that time already.
Also ideally wrist lock is set up, transitioned into or transitions to another technique...etc. if your enemy learns what you are doing.

Kotegaeshi is included in the standard police arrest technique in Japan, and I often see it being used in news videos, so I disagree with your opinion. On earth what is the difference between saying ``If you know the opponent will do a wrist lock, you can put strength in your arm'' and ``If you know that the punch is coming, you should guard it''? ? I think the fact that you've put more effort into your arms means that you're stuck on the spot, and in terms of Judo/Jujitsu it's easier to deal with. I know that among the simple self-defense techniques taught in the United States, kotegaeshi is not a technique that uses the whole body, but is taught as a convenient magic technique that can be performed by simply twisting the wrist.

I love your stuff brother, but on this I must disagree. To say wrist locks don’t work in general I think is a misnomer. They’re fantastic for escapes it’s just a matter of applying them at the appropriate times. when somebody grabs your wrist for instance, you don’t wanna give them a chance to secure it. If to tight the loosening technique. The moment your grabbed, you immediately trap and circle around. Or just circle hand left or right with appropriate steps . I’d love to discuss this with you wanna DM because there’s much more to it than just it works or it doesn’t work. I wish we were closer. I’d like to discuss in person. Anyway. I’ve been instructing the phone defense for awhile and it’s solid better than keys or any other legal implements. The point is it’s usually always in someone’s hand and ready to go . Also as far as situational awareness, I tell my people that whe being out and about you can use the phone for checking your six. If you shwant you can set phone up to respond to”I’m being followed” and you can set it to automatically call whoever you designate (cop, parents) and it will start a video recording and take pics to send back to home base. Anyway I guess you didn’t bother to try, but I can understand you probably always get inundated with suggestions. So I’ll just keep it to myself and my students. The reason wrist techniques seem appealing is because, on paper, the wrist is an easily accessible target and its also a relatively weak point on the human body. This weakness is the very reason that most people are really good at protecting their wrists the same way most people are instinctively good at protecting their eyes. Aside from that there isn’t much correct in this video. Some techniques take longer to achieve “mean time to sufficiency”. Throws take longer to master and have a smaller window of opportunity than most ground techniques. Likewise wrist techniques, have a small window of opportunity but the payoff makes developing this skill worth the investment with the caveat that a) your self-defense needs can wait 2-4 years and b) you participate in a sport where wrist licks are allowed which leaves Tomiki Aikido (the competitive branch) and a growing number of BJJ gyms. Source: 25 years Judo+Tomiki (Sport) Aikido; 15 years many others; many successful uses of tekubi waza in BJJ.

You ever try tossing someone with even a little bit of wrestling or judo training or that’s just a lot bigger and stronger than you are that doesn’t want to be thrown? Not so easy. So, I guess hip throws are kinda bullshit too. Come to think of it, it’s actually pretty hard to land a good punch on someone with even a modicum of decent fight training.
