Mr. Bairead, What happened to the Quiet Girl happened to me. I grew up with an angry, cruel father, just back from WWII. My mother knew what I was going through so she sent me to spend summers with my grandfather and mother from the ages of 10 -13. Watching her receiving love and acceptance for the first time just as I did was powerfully moving. I often say that my grandfather saved me. His love and warmth gave me another model of what a man could be. I cried at the end of the film when she ran after her saviors. I'm 80. Thank you very much for the gift you've given me. D. Dworkin

So many scenes in this movie are ever lightly shimmering with a profound tenderness that will slowly and gently embrace your heart. I absolutely loved this film and it's at the top of my list of favorite movies this year. And I am sharing it with family and friends.

I am viewing this interview about a year after it was recorded, but three months after I saw the movie twice at the Kentucky Theater (two weeks apart). TH-cam algorithms continue to feed me videos from interviews, award shows, panel discussions, and I cannot get enough of them. Sarah, beautiful interview. We live in a world that can be harsh at times, and every once in a while something is created that expresses universal themes so subtly, so delicately .... I was profoundly moved by the story, by the performances of the three main actors but also what was drawn out of the supporting cast (most notably Cait's harried family), the cinematography, and in an odd sort of way, one can see that this is a documentary of a summer of a child's life as she experiences and appreciates a world beyond her own. Colm, I've read the book, and feel you've adopted the sentiments perfectly, the final scene's hug notwithstanding: the realization on Cait's parents' parts that she returned a different child with a hint of fear that their home environment's inadequacies were exposed. A sad movie, BTW, as we are shown how things can be and must return to the ways things frequently are.

I've come to feel more optimistic about the film's final scene. As you say, Cait returns home a different child. She now knows what it's like to live in a clean, organized home with loving caregivers. She knows that her family doesn't have to live the way they do, that a better life is possible. Also, Cait has literally faced death and escaped, and I can't help but feel that experience has strengthened her inside. When she runs after Sean and hugs him and calls him "Daddy", I think that's Cait's way of throwing down the gauntlet and telling her parents, especially Dan, this is what a real father is like, so start measuring up. She'll never be the kid who hides under her bed again.

@@user-bn9kr6nz5h I'm less optimistic about Dan getting the message. They way he was portrayed in the movie, he is aware of his shortcomings, but he has no desire to work on improving or addressing them.

I was blessed to see this film on Amazon. I have Irish ancestry and am very drawn to its stories and music. I watched this movie three times in a row, I was so touched and moved by the story, the actors and locations, the way it was shot, the subtlety and beauty of it. I've been telling everyone about it. It's a masterpiece. Thank you so much Colm and Claire. Tears.

There was a radio clip of an all ireland hurling final from 1973 and other things seem to be from the 70s yet he said it was set in the early 80s .They were other things like the freezer which may or not have been common at the time.Doesn't really take anything away as such slightly less down to a tee than i thought .Lovely film .

I remember home chest freezers coming on the market in the 1960s. It was a real novelty to be able to buy meat and other things in bulk and freeze them. There were also a lot of news items on what could be frozen and what could not.
