I'm impressed that you're impressed to the level that you are. Most reactions to this song are usually glowing, but not as glowing as your reaction. I agree 100% with you.

She's actually performing a parody of female opera voices and performances… and she's doing it perfectly, since she's got a classical education in opera herself.

This is the Top of the Pops recording, this is playback. You should check out the Rockpalast recording. That's a live recording. Then you realize how good she really is.

Remember Nina, pretty Avant-garde, sort of operatic punk lol. Glad you're feeling better.

Nina has fantastic vocal rage, and she also does have a new wave/punk side. Try New York, New York , and TV Glotzer respectively. Universal Radio was a semi-pop hit for her.

I'm sure you must have heard the track "African Reggae" on the Nina Hagen Band's second album called Unbehagen (it was released as a single in 79). This is Nina Hagen's most famous song. The Nina Hagen Band only released two albums and then Nina Hagen chose to pursue her own solo path, as the musicians formed the band Spliff which released four albums before disbanding. Nina Hagen still releases albums to this day. A new album called Unity is due out in early December.

Nina is amazing! I’m both so grateful to see you react to her for the first time and also absolutely shocked that I haven’t come across this video sooner❤️‍🔥

Nina Hagen is great!!! At least at that time. The whole album is superb. Another great one is "Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo" from the same album. I don't like it when she sings in English. It sounds so much better in German, especially in that opera voice.

Speaking of Lene Lovich, Nina was in a movie with her called "Cha Cha". They also did a duet together called "Don't Kill the Animals" which was recorded for PETA.
Nina started in East Germany, then defected to the West where she got together with The Sex Pistols and others. She has done punk, pop, Big Band, Hindu music, Christmas carols, and more recently Christian-based music. When Angela Merkel left office, she had Nina do some songs for her. After a ten year hiatus, she is going to have a new album out on December 9, 2022.

Nina Hagen is a DDR trained opera singer. When she reached West Germany, she enjoyed her freedom and became the Gothmother of punk(rock). I would reccommend live performances from Rockpalast 1978. TV-glotzer, Unbeschreiblich weiblich and Auf'm friedhof are great! I still have the album I bought in 1980 and luckaly I still have a record player ;):D Thanks for the great reaction! (PS You will never run out of music to react to!!). Stay healthy and happy!

One more thing if I may; check out the song ,,Der Wind Hat Mir ein Leid Erzählt" which was released around 2000. She has had a long illustrious career. She tackled many different musical genres, so every album is a different adventure. She's now a Christian and in 2010 she released a gospel album entitled, ,, Personal Jesus". Enjoy!

For something very different from Nina, watch the official video by Apocolyptica (featuring Nina Hagen) of the song “Seemann”
She really shows off the other end of her vocal range.

Well, that was interesting. I only know Nina Hagen from the synthpop album she made with Giorgio Moroder ("Fearless"), which I like a lot, but I assumed isn't her usual style. I guess I was right!

Another singer you ought to listen to is Betty Davis. She was around in the 70s and she was married to Miles Davis. I think she was great and she may have influenced Nina Hagen.

To extend the comment about Nina Hagen... Her videos got a lot of play on Australian TV back in the day, because she was odd and interesting and TV was Australia's eye to the rest of the world. We had numerous music programs in the late 70's/early 80's. The later you'd stay up, the stranger the music videos got... From 12am, you'd get The Residents, Nina Hagen, The Reels... which leads me to a request.
Please do a request for The Reels - After The News (1980) from the nzoz1980 channel. The video comes up the top of the search results and has a picture of Jimmy Carter and Leonid Brezhnev in the thumbnail. It's a cute video.. mild social commentary... 1980 style.
