And mile markers could easily be missing, or even ignored by a malicious soldier. A mile was about 1000 steps. What do you think would happen to a Jew who refused to take 1001 steps? By going two miles, you make sure that you're beyond the legal limit, beyond any possible doubt. Doing that, without resistance, is a way of keeping you safe from those that aren't as honorable as these soldiers are portrayed to be, while also opening the minds of those who are so honorable.

Are there stories from that incident in the temple until his appearance in the Gospels? Does that mean that he didn’t exist during those periods? When he travelled in the New Testament was he explicitly silent EXCEPT for the words in the Bible? No one thinks that the extra biblical stories depicted in the Chosen are real. What it does is allow the Holy Spirit to draw nearer to those that don’t know Him and encourage them to read his word. It is easy to discredit the Chosen for being extra biblical, but it allows people who sometimes struggle with understanding how God could love them to see themselves as Matthew or Mary. To see that no one is past hope and the redemption that God gives us. At the end of the day, no one knows what happened. But I believe the Chosen will draw people nearer to Christ so that one day they can ask God himself what happened. That we will meet Lazarus and Mary and the centurion and know the Truth. That is the only “scenario” that matters.

There’s also the small matter of embarrassing the Roman soldiers in front of their fellow soldiers by carrying their gear into the centurion outpost for them. It makes them look weak in front of their peers
The easy path often seems powerful initially, by the sheer looks and display of it, but it is exactly what it is in the end - the easy path, that every weakling can take. Only truly strongest will choose a harsher, but ultimately more righteous path that requires selflessness, humbleness, self sacrifice, mastery of emotion... things only a handful of us can ever touch in our short, egocentric lives. Jesus points to true divinity that goes way beyond enforcing brute power over those less fortunate and weaker than you. Lord is amazing.

I've seen that scene in my mind a thousand times. I don't think I have ever actually thought about what it would have looked like. It's one thing to think "that wouldn't have been nice." It's another thing to see them struggling along, sweating and stumbling.
This is the kind of teaching and action that is proof of God. Teachings like this don’t come of men alone. Who among us can even do this thing in practice none the less think of it as a perfect moral ideal and principle. It’s astounding to me.

this was a great scene, it's a great show of patience and humility! I love how he volunteers to continue carrying those things for the soldiers, showing the goodness of his spirit. When he is forced he does as he is told and the soldiers joke.. But when he volunteers, Then they are moved. That is all it takes to plant a seed of light in their hearts, Which makes it all worthwhile!

What I really liked about this scene is that the Romans, especially their commander - i think a Decanus, since they're just about a dozen Roman soldiers, felt humbled by Jesus' initiative and apologetic in regards to their own actions. The Decanus even had to ask permission from Jesus to get his helmet back, when he didn't need to.
Lord God is very good and intelligent, great wisdom and knowledgeable, and powerful. Not just one mile but two miles because frontier post roman soldier get in trouble, let them walk extra mile. Jesus Save !

This is another example of the Wisdom taught by Jeshua Ben Joseph. When someone steals your coat, give him your cloak also.When someone hits you offer him the other cheek. This really shows if we do our part to really live the word of God, the Lord will oftentimes convict those who do wrong. The soldiers were convicted that hey I’m doing bad here. But if we try and exact vengeance for ourselves, the Holy Spirit cannot convict the ones doing us bad. There's a beautiful detail, even when trying to force Jesus and His disciples to carry their helmets, the commander's helmet is given to Jesus, signalling that even Roman soldiers recognised His authority unconsciously over the entire flock
I believe the message is that judas originally heard was if someone asks for your coat give them your tunic as welll the old give more than you are asked message
I think it's also a subtle foreshadowing on what will happen to the Romans 300 years later after Jesus' crucifixion. There's a reason why you cannot spell Roman Catholic without the word Roman.
It's a strange thing, but seeing them wearing the helmets is oddly amusing. Jesus, however, carries it like the king he is. Like a crown of another kind, honestly.
The extra biblical portrayals must have been taken from other historical sources to help us understand the context. The Apostles must have mentioned this to St Paul. He said in his Epistle to the Romans to do good to your enemies “for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.”
I love the buildup Judas gets in this season. Most of his portrayals are way too black and white to be realistic. He is either portrayed as evil incarnate, which both makes his motives comical and illogical (he's SEEN the miracles, he walked with Jesus himself!) and really makes you think how the heck did Jesus, and especially the other apostles never saw that, they weren't dumb... Or it's the other way around. He is so pure and innocent, and the entire narrative pretty much is absolving him of any evil intent, making him into an almost victim like figure, of someone who was determined to betray Jesus, but never really wanted it. But neither is what the Bible tells us. Bible portrays Judas as one of the 12 in ever respect. Not only he was there when miracles happened, he actually was one of the 12 sent to other cities, where he performed miracles himself. He was a true apostle, not a disney villain. BUT he also wasn't a victim. Bible records he was a thief, and was stealing from Jesus and the apostles long before he ever thought of betraying Jesus. And it also shows him being conflicted. Selling Jesus away, but then being ashamed with the money, but instead of properly converting, falling into despair and hanging himself. Judas was a complex character in the Scriptures. Torn apart. Conflicted. An apostle and a thief. A miracle worked and a traitor. All in one. This show, at least so far, was able to capture that splendidly. Gives a motive for Judas stealing the money. Gives a character arc to explain how he becomes bitter and confused, even after taking part in the miracles. I also love it that they've grounded his confusion in a real Scripture based dilemma - that so many people were expecting Jesus to be a political leader, not a Savior. You can tell that peoplle who write this show really love the Bible. Even if they do not nail everything in it, you can tell they are in the business of trying to show how the events COULD have looked like, resulting in the Bible being written down the way it did. It's a very worth while attempt, probably best I've seen on this scale, covering so many parts of so many gospels. Awesome job guys.

Whoever did the casting for this show seems to have gotten it right in making Jews of the 1st Century be smaller than Romans. The average height of a Jew of the time was 5 foot 5; while a legionary would be around 2 inches taller. Carrying a legionary's armour and gear would be gruelling.

Great scene. The humility of Christ likely led some of those men to question what they were doing and how they were treating the local people. Also, the former soldier in me wants to chew out the Romans for their lack of discipline. Secure your chin straps so your cheek guards actually work and protect you! 😅
Highly unliekly soldiers would give their most valuable bits of armour. Likely hood it would be bedding. They would definitely not give up their helmets.

The parable appears in the Bible but the event depicted in the video is a fabrication. The comment by the actor depicting JESUS to Judas that the dishonor to JESUS is no greater than the dishonor to HIS followers debases JESUS making GOD equal to man. Matthew 26:11 dispels the misconception that JESUS is no important than HIS followers.
How did they not spot those Roman Legionnaires standing in the middle of that crossroads from a literal mile away? How did they walk up on them without even noticing them?
The romans kinda make refernce that they know jesus has been called meshiah, so i think the reason they took thier weapons and armor back is that the messiah (who the jews thought would be a military figure) was awfully insistant in walking them to their base camp.
People dont seem to realise that the romans probably got executed for this, or atleast flogged and shit due to roman law. Jesus didnt simply offer, he offed it knowing it'd hurt the enemy in the long run. Not only a messenger, but also a sword.
I highly doubt it. If he had killed a citizen for no reason, then that would most likely have severe consequences. But forcing them to go one more mile than they have to, that's not really a court martial offence. Especially of Jesus says that they offered to help. The message here is not to hurt the enemy in the long run, but to meet injustice with kindness.

Roman law and custom dictates that you slap with the back of the hand, assuming that person is below you, if you turn the other cheek they're forced to hit you with their palm, rather than the back of their hand, meaning they'll have to betray their custom and most likely be viewed as either someone that considers jews and slaves to be their equal. Jesus didnt preach 'dont fight', he preached 'dont fight stupid, fight smart'.

There's a practical side to it, as well as a social one. This was a time before odometers, let alone GPS, or any other method of measuring. And mile markers could easily be missing, or even ignored by a malicious soldier. A mile was about 1000 steps. What do you think would happen to a Jew who refused to take 1001 steps?
By going two miles, you make sure that you're beyond the legal limit, beyond any possible doubt. Doing that, without resistance, is a way of keeping you safe from those that aren't as honorable as these soldiers are portrayed to be, while also opening the minds of those who are so honorable.

Are there stories from that incident in the temple until his appearance in the Gospels? Does that mean that he didn’t exist during those periods? When he travelled in the New Testament was he explicitly silent EXCEPT for the words in the Bible?
No one thinks that the extra biblical stories depicted in the Chosen are real. What it does is allow the Holy Spirit to draw nearer to those that don’t know Him and encourage them to read his word. It is easy to discredit the Chosen for being extra biblical, but it allows people who sometimes struggle with understanding how God could love them to see themselves as Matthew or Mary. To see that no one is past hope and the redemption that God gives us.
At the end of the day, no one knows what happened. But I believe the Chosen will draw people nearer to Christ so that one day they can ask God himself what happened. That we will meet Lazarus and Mary and the centurion and know the Truth.
That is the only “scenario” that matters.

There’s also the small matter of embarrassing the Roman soldiers in front of their fellow soldiers by carrying their gear into the centurion outpost for them. It makes them look weak in front of their peers
There is more power in humility, shows true strength.
The easy path often seems powerful initially, by the sheer looks and display of it, but it is exactly what it is in the end - the easy path, that every weakling can take. Only truly strongest will choose a harsher, but ultimately more righteous path that requires selflessness, humbleness, self sacrifice, mastery of emotion... things only a handful of us can ever touch in our short, egocentric lives. Jesus points to true divinity that goes way beyond enforcing brute power over those less fortunate and weaker than you. Lord is amazing.

I've seen that scene in my mind a thousand times. I don't think I have ever actually thought about what it would have looked like. It's one thing to think "that wouldn't have been nice." It's another thing to see them struggling along, sweating and stumbling.

What I really liked about this scene is that the Romans, especially their commander - i think a Decanus, since they're just about a dozen Roman soldiers, felt humbled by Jesus' initiative and apologetic in regards to their own actions.
The Decanus even had to ask permission from Jesus to get his helmet back, when he didn't need to.
Lord God is very good and intelligent, great wisdom and knowledgeable, and powerful. Not just one mile but two miles because frontier post roman soldier get in trouble, let them walk extra mile. Jesus Save !

Watching this scene I really feel like Judas should go assist James. Lighten James’ load. It is already hard enough as it is for James, without carrying all the stuff. And Judas is carrying the least stuff within the group.

I think this might have been the beginning of Judas going over the edge. He really felt like Jesus should have started a revolution there.
It's quite a practice in subduing one's own pride. From what I've heard, the people of Israel are quite stubborn. So imagine how they might feel if this situation actually occurred.

This really shows if we do our part to really live the word of God, the Lord will oftentimes convict those who do wrong. The soldiers were convicted that hey I’m doing bad here. But if we try and exact vengeance for ourselves, the Holy Spirit cannot convict the ones doing us bad. So when we “resist an evil person” we are depriving the Holy Spirit from being able to to convict those who wrong us.

There's a beautiful detail, even when trying to force Jesus and His disciples to carry their helmets, the commander's helmet is given to Jesus, signalling that even Roman soldiers recognised His authority unconsciously over the entire flock

The Roman soldier placed his helmet on Christ+ in petty mockery.
Later they will place on Christ's+ Head, a crown of thorns in absolute mockery.
I think it's also a subtle foreshadowing on what will happen to the Romans 300 years later after Jesus' crucifixion.
There's a reason why you cannot spell Roman Catholic without the word Roman.
It's a strange thing, but seeing them wearing the helmets is oddly amusing. Jesus, however, carries it like the king he is. Like a crown of another kind, honestly.
Well to be fair that's because it was the Romans who carried Jesus' will thanks to Constantine.
The extra biblical portrayals must have been taken from other historical sources to help us understand the context. The Apostles must have mentioned this to St Paul. He said in his Epistle to the Romans to do good to your enemies “for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.”

I was expecting Jesus to respond to Judas asking “why would we help Romans?” with “we are not helping Romans. We are helping people.”
I love the buildup Judas gets in this season. Most of his portrayals are way too black and white to be realistic. He is either portrayed as evil incarnate, which both makes his motives comical and illogical (he's SEEN the miracles, he walked with Jesus himself!) and really makes you think how the heck did Jesus, and especially the other apostles never saw that, they weren't dumb... Or it's the other way around. He is so pure and innocent, and the entire narrative pretty much is absolving him of any evil intent, making him into an almost victim like figure, of someone who was determined to betray Jesus, but never really wanted it. But neither is what the Bible tells us. Bible portrays Judas as one of the 12 in ever respect. Not only he was there when miracles happened, he actually was one of the 12 sent to other cities, where he performed miracles himself. He was a true apostle, not a disney villain. BUT he also wasn't a victim. Bible records he was a thief, and was stealing from Jesus and the apostles long before he ever thought of betraying Jesus. And it also shows him being conflicted. Selling Jesus away, but then being ashamed with the money, but instead of properly converting, falling into despair and hanging himself. Judas was a complex character in the Scriptures. Torn apart. Conflicted. An apostle and a thief. A miracle worked and a traitor. All in one. This show, at least so far, was able to capture that splendidly. Gives a motive for Judas stealing the money. Gives a character arc to explain how he becomes bitter and confused, even after taking part in the miracles. I also love it that they've grounded his confusion in a real Scripture based dilemma - that so many people were expecting Jesus to be a political leader, not a Savior. You can tell that peoplle who write this show really love the Bible. Even if they do not nail everything in it, you can tell they are in the business of trying to show how the events COULD have looked like, resulting in the Bible being written down the way it did. It's a very worth while attempt, probably best I've seen on this scale, covering so many parts of so many gospels. Awesome job guys.

The ''pack'' itself weighed around 10 - 15 kilograms (around 22 - 34 lbs). Whoever did the casting for this show seems to have gotten it right in making Jews of the 1st Century be smaller than Romans. The average height of a Jew of the time was 5 foot 5; while a legionary would be around 2 inches taller. Carrying a legionary's armour and gear would be gruelling.
Let's not forget, they had to walk TWO miles BACK and pick up their baggage, and then continue on their own journey.

Great scene. The humility of Christ likely led some of those men to question what they were doing and how they were treating the local people. Also, the former soldier in me wants to chew out the Romans for their lack of discipline. Secure your chin straps so your cheek guards actually work and protect you! 😅

Eventually (and ironically), the romans' glorious Rome became the center of early christianity. This scene is one big nod to it.
Highly unliekly soldiers would give their most valuable bits of armour. Likely hood it would be bedding. They would definitely not give up their helmets.

Well to be fair Constantine the Great only made Christianity as one of the Roman Empire's religions until Theodosius the Great made Christianity the Roman Empire's official state religion which put a final nail in the coffin to Roman Paganism.

The parable appears in the Bible but the event depicted in the video is a fabrication. The comment by the actor depicting JESUS to Judas that the dishonor to JESUS is no greater than the dishonor to HIS followers debases JESUS making GOD equal to man. Matthew 26:11 dispels the misconception that JESUS is no important than HIS followers.

The romans kinda make refernce that they know jesus has been called meshiah, so i think the reason they took thier weapons and armor back is that the messiah (who the jews thought would be a military figure) was awfully insistant in walking them to their base camp.

Jesus didnt simply offer, he offed it knowing it'd hurt the enemy in the long run. Not only a messenger, but also a sword.
I highly doubt it. If he had killed a citizen for no reason, then that would most likely have severe consequences. But forcing them to go one more mile than they have to, that's not really a court martial offence. Especially of Jesus says that they offered to help. The message here is not to hurt the enemy in the long run, but to meet injustice with kindness.

Roman law and custom dictates that you slap with the back of the hand, assuming that person is below you, if you turn the other cheek they're forced to hit you with their palm, rather than the back of their hand, meaning they'll have to betray their custom and most likely be viewed as either someone that considers jews and slaves to be their equal.
