The Strokes Celebrate Grammy Win After Technical Snafu and Talk the Future of Rock

- Journalists covering the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards were warned in advance that the quality of virtual interviews with artists was entirely dependent on the wi-fi in their location. For the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti, a glitchy connection made for an awkward presentation when the New York band won best rock album.
The Strokes explained their connection issues and also speculated on the future of rock as the genre continues to evolve.

Rock at this point is not rock in the sense of general rock expectations in the industry or general population consumption. The genre “Rock” has evolved so much.. this album was well deserved captured the essence of The Strokes as a whole.

@@patriciofernandez2711 These days (past 10 years) I believe “rock” or “rock and roll” have been used these days somewhat loosely.
Vaguely speaking. But if you’re in a band, group, or any collective unit and you mainly use instruments you’re most likely to fall under the category of a rock band with a sub categories suck as rock with synths, psychedelic and pop, IE Tame Impala.. one of the biggest rock bands in a while.
“The voidz” Julian Casablancas band I would fall it under rock also because they use instruments but they’re specifically synth cyber punk. It’s weird, shoudnt even be a category anymore because A lot of bands these days are far more creative and creative than 70s,80s,90s and even 200s around 2010 and up. Music in the “rock” world started to change a lot from 2010-2021 lots out of the box thinking & innovation rock the genre is dead it’s evolved to something new. You can say the same other genres categories. I’ve been a musician & recording producer for 10 years and went to a music school so I would only validate my opinion 6/10 there’s still a lot more to learn

I just checked, and apparently U2 won best rock album the year Is This It came out. Really? Is This It was iconic and incredibly influential right in that moment, a true instant classic. Did U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" really leave a big splash in the rock world? What a joke.
I'm really happy for The Strokes, no matter how much you shit on award shows, obviously it must feel great to win. New Abormal is an awesome album, but them winning for this one as opposed to Is This It is kinda like when Beck finally won: the artist totally deserved it, but they aren't winning for their best work which is just kinda weird. Is This It was a damn near perfect album. Every song is great, and they completely revitalized rock with that release. Remember the whole "garage rock" thing after that album? Everyone was trying to be The Strokes, both in sound and fashion. Every young celebrity was wearing a Strokes shirt. Once again, The Grammy's just totally missed the point.
agreed. but still. better late than never. and they did deserve to get this for THIS album. same things happens at/with the Oscars, many actors end up winning later in their careers for 'alright' performances after years of losing, being snubbed or not even nominated. first nom, and their first win. i'm a Strokes fan since the early days and i could not be more happy for them. that said, they're too cool for this and they never lost their fans, unlike the music critics who kept dissing them for years. this was their revenge to all the 'the strokes are no more' naysayers and that makes me feel terrific.
I love that Julian hates “blues rock.” It’s not that it’s a bad genre but it’s way overdone.

They’re a band that has no limits nor concerns themselves with genres, which is one of the attributes of true artists. You are merely calling them rock for they’re distorted guitar sounds and angry vocals.

@@jesusiracheta8570 they don’t make indie rock they make whatever music that moves through them. You just call it indie rock. Indie isn’t even a type of music, it’s a genre of artist. Julian criticizes the ongoing slow burn of “blues rock and roll”. An old genre that should have been moved on from but we haven’t. A majority of the music community is still obsessed with music from the 60s and how that was the best and they just don’t it like that anymore. So they buy the drum kit that sounds like bonham or a les Paul and a pedal that gives you that good ol cranked Marshall tone and they look up how to sound Clapton or page and become a “tone chaser” all just to play the same shit from 50+ years ago because it’s all about consumerism. Sadly some actually talented artists get sucked up into this “the only good music is blues” mindset. It’s old and outdated but Led Zeppelin is still a bigger name than newer bands so big companies are gonna make money off of selling you the tools to sound like them rather than the new “indie bands” when indie just means that they don’t conform to any genre. It’s become such a term to describe music that isn’t either chart topping or similar to all other music. The music is a conduit to express themselves through and they’ll do that by any means. This is no hate to those old bands but hate towards the companies and culture sucking them dry to sell you gear.
Just because they use loud guitars does not make them rock, just as Regina spektor playing the piano does not make her classical. Music should not be made to fit in a genre and the strokes don’t do that. A majority of their songs could fit into the genre of rock because it sounds like it but they don’t make “rock” they make music regardless of what it sounds like.
