  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence are hot topics right now as development accelerates at a rapid pace and new discoveries and capabilities are unlocked daily. One of the most interesting aspects of working with ML/AI is what it teaches us about how human beings learn. By figuring out how to teach machines to learn, data scientists are also discovering how to help people learn better as well. Ben Holmes is a data scientist specializing in machine learning/artificial intelligence. He has worked in a wide range of fields, from research for new clinical therapeutic techniques, DNA analysis for use in the legal system and mapping of neurons in the hippocampus, to fraud prevention for large banks and network security. His particular interests are in the philosophy of science and the current state of machine learning research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    The needs of the many clearly outweigh the needs of the few

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry but no, this is wrong. This leaves no room for those who are divergent, and those who are creative. These are the people who make leaps in our evolution. If only the needs of the many are met, then society as a whole stagnates. It is through diversifying and mutation that both evolution and learning grow.
      The needs of all should be held in equal esteem. If the needs of the many truly outweigh the needs of the few, then what happens to say, those with a rare disease, or those who are handicapped (as just a couple example among thousands).

    If we could just zap the world with a frequency that just gets everyone on the same wavelength all at once so we can start learning and working together.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is through our diversity, our unique knowledge and skill sets that we are able to work millions of times better as a team than we ever could if we were all on the same wavelength. What we need is to be aware of that and to be more tolerant of those who are simply different than ourselves (not those who are violent or intolerant of others themselves).

    And that is why we are sent to school to get rid of free thought and replace it with the thinking of " one ".

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends largely on the teachers and administrators of said school. I've had both great and horrible teachers.
      School can and should be a place of learning, not a place to instill and confirm unfounded bias. It can be and often is either one of those. But most often (because humans are fallible) somewhere in between. We can and we should change that.

      @@aylbdrmadison1051 Generally speaking the main stream schools are there to produce a usable work force
      with just enough ability to satisfy the need of the work place , if you want a free thinker then the education
      has to be paid for and the children go to a school where the teachers are generally paid more and still
      encourage thinking that will encourage the student to challenge , most of my teachers were too
      easily threatened and really only taught what the syllabus told them to . I have encouraged my own children
      to be polite but accept nothing at face value .

      And yet for most who do (not all), belief in god is the biggest way they're "carried along by those tides and waves". And no, there's nothing wrong with you posting a video about how to get a flat stomach. That was an absurd comment they made. My guess is out of fear that god(s) and or goddess(es) may actually exist.
      As far as that question goes, no one will ever know the answer. Even if one day someone was able to prove the existence of *one* god/goddess, that would still not even remotely imply that others (perhaps in the millions) also exist. To prove a goddess or god does not exist is impossible. But also to ever prove monotheism is an absolute impossibility as well. In fact if anything, just by proving that one god or goddess existed, that would only make it far far more likely that others exist as well.
