46: The Scottish Isle | Drama as the Huge Cedar is Cut! Garden Restoration; Sheep at Play. Scotland

  • We have a professional local tree surgeon come to cut the massive cedar blocking our access route to the cottage, and Katie was right - the root ball and stump did spring right back into place! We take the sheep to investigate the forest and fresh lumber, and begin to dismantle the plastic fence in front of the cottage. We investigate where to set up our Starlink dish, which has been crowdfunded and gifted to us by our viewers. 🤍

The opening shots of you two, the cat and the two sheep were just adorable. Do you write Katie? I see a front cover of a little book in those opening shots, maybe for kids? Something in the Scots language? For tourists? It’s all there, maybe Scott has hidden talents in drawing or writing? You know those little starter books you get for children? Something like that. Just a thought 💭 ❤❤❤

Old freezers make great animal feed storage that rats/ mice/ chipmunks/ squirrels can not beak into. Can also be used for root cellar type storage for dry goods.

Guys be careful of the length of the cable run from your dish to your router. It uses POE (power over ethernet) and the length of the run will impact performance if it is excessive, over 100m point to point. I would temporarily install it in a variety of locations around the house to check how it works before deciding on 1 specific place. The more sheltered from the wind the better for the motor on the dish.

I bet that wood smells wonderful. Great insect proof wood and repellent too. I pulled hundreds of sproutings with a keeper in the Cairngorms. Quite a job! That old flower bed would make a lovely sheltered sitting area. Morning coffee, evening wine. Love hearing the curlew in the background. My ❤️ bird. Takes me to my Welsh escape. Good luck with the Starlink!

Absolutely fantastic footage of the birds eating the seed. I rushed to my bird books to identify them, since they are so different from the USA Pacific NW birds. Some of those round pieces from the fallen tree would make excellent small tables or stools, you might be able to sell them. My dog and cat would be in paradise on the island. Brie is my favorite of your two sheep, enjoy watching her explore. Hopefully Scott's back improves, as someone with back issues, I admire the way he fights through it to get the work done. Seeing all of that beautiful cedar was quite an experience. I think about how long it must have taken for that tree to have grown as large as it was. I hope more of the wood will be utilized in some way. What will you do with all of the freezers? Are any of them actually usable? I am with you when it comes to having to locate the necessary items for setting up your Starlink. Why does it always have to be right in ones line of vision? We have a left-over dish from a cable service, on the roof of our garage that I hate but my husband does not do heights and the service does not remove their crap, so we're stuck with it. Same thing when they were trying to find a location for a new cell tower in our town, badly needed for emergency purposes, along with normal usage. Of course, it ended up on the corner of the block where our City Hall is. Viseble all winter, until the trees fill out with leaves again. Loved seeing Brie, Crowdie and Jeeves follow you up further into the woods. I think Jeeves was a bit more excited than the sheep.

I never thought that I would say this, but I love your pet sheep. They are endearing. Note that I live in the Welsh countryside less than 50m away from fields of hundreds of sheep. I see sheep more than I see some members of my family.!!! Weird. BTW all that wood. I'm already imagining tables, stools, chopping blocks and a cottage so warm and cosy, oh yes, a sauna.

If you can split the logs into quarters by hand, then a small Alaskan mill for your chainsaw and a small portable plainer should be a possible option for you to create some beautiful cedar lumber for exterior or interior siding (sauna?)etc after the logs have seasoned. Keep the logs wet for the first few months so they check less while drying out.

  • @abigailgerlach5443
    @abigailgerlach5443 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I saw on another channel that they took one of those rounds and nailed it to the top of a stump making it into a bird feeder platform. I thought that was clever!
A sea monster? Release the Kracken! I can just hear the cat saying, "Mummy! You got me a new scratching post!"
You can never have too many book shelves. I think I currently have eleven and one is 26 feet long! It runs the length of the attic.
You could use the freezer outside your door as wood storage, but I'm sure you thought of that.

It's good to see that you're preparing for your satellite, but a little sad that it will have to be right in your view of the bay. Still, the benefits are huge. And what a difference the removal of the enclosure and old fridge at the front of the cottage makes! It's lovely now! Hopefully there are plants that sheep don't eat, but that you'll like, that you can eventually put there. When I moved to my house 10 years ago, I spent the entire first summer clearing out junk from the back yard. It's so worth all the work, because in large part, it's the energy you put into a place that makes it yours, that makes it feel like home. Best wishes to you both!

Maybe you could probably convert the old freezers into raised beds? Clad the outside with stone/timber maybe.

Wow that cedar would produce some really nice slabs for planking, it would cost you a fortune to purchase. You can split or cut it by hand but realistically doing it with a dodgy back, sorry but no way🥵. The simplest way to process that cedar is use an Alaskan mill by Panther and a Logosol F2 chain sawmill but you will need a much larger chainsaw with a milling bar and chain plus some decent safety gear, chaps, helmet with face guard and some chainsaw boots. Remember all it takes is to get tired or slip and you can loose a foot, leg or get some wood chips in the eye. Be safe👍

I absolutely LOVE your channel. I found you about a month ago and have watched from the beginning to catch up. It’s been wonderful! I don’t want to “catch up” now for fear of not having any left to watch. I really feel for you with your back Scott. I have a spinal condition that flares up now and again. I hope you get some respite from it soon and if not time for a good old epidural for some relief! Thank you for sharing an insight into your lives ❤

So good that you have the huge old tree removed from your path. Looks like you will have plenty of wood for quite a long while.
Perhaps you could put one or two of the old freezers to use by turning them into compost bins. I vaguely remember reading an idea about composting with worms but I don't recall where exactly I read about it but I am sure you could find more info online. No doubt adding compost to a future garden would help improve your soil as well as your harvest.
I found your channel fairly recently and it has truly become one of my favorites. I went back and watched from the beginning and have just a few more to go before I am completely caught up. I have enjoyed every video so much! Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your daily life. Hopefully your channel will be around for a long time and you will continue to see the it grow.

That bolder looks like a good place to fit the dish, I think the pivot mount looks like a good option as you could bolt it to the bolder and adjust the stem so it’s vertical. It looks very rocky around the house so digging a deep hole for a secure fixing would be very hard. The only limitation is the cable length which you would need to put in a conduit and shallow trench. Good luck 🤞

I watched the little fat robin trying to find food in the snow, so put some bird seed out for it, only to see him dangling from the cats jaws two minutes later. Talk about guilt trip.

Beautiful location it really is pretty it kind of reminds me of Southeastern Alaska in the fall or the early spring I noticed that you know you have that wonderful title flat out in front of your place have you put any crab traps out there or prawn traps and also you have those deer fences you know deer tastes really good during winter but your title flat this has so many great things you can eat off it at low tide
