I've read the real/official reason though (don't remember everything but something about delay after cancellation, contract issues, something about missing profit due to copyright or something like that, channel/network they aired on and so on) but without the background and having watched 3 seasons of Dark Matter and 5 season of Killjoys one have to wonder why the lesser good show got the thumbs up (I know, it was not owned by the same company/network, but still) and the better one got cancelled.

I have to say I thought this show was cancelled too early and the final episode left the fate of numerous characters in doubt. Perhaps we'll receive a Serenity-style movie at some point to wrap all the plot lines up. But I'm definitely with you on the Space Samurai. And I absolutely loved that every single title of every episode was actually a line of dialogue spoken by one of the crew in the episode. I always thought it was a neat way of naming episodes, especially the season two finale "But First, We Save The Galaxy".

I think of that as the first shoe to drop before the cancellation.
I came to watch Dark Matter after watching Lost Girl (a Canadian urban fantasy show), that had Zoie Palmer as one of the main characters, playing a love interest of the main character Bo. It was a bit weird seeing her with Anthony Lemke (Three) who was in it for a few episodes as a lover of Bo, and season 2 had Kristen Holden-Ried , who was also a lover of Bo (she was a succubus, it made sense). Dark Matter was fantastic, reminded me a bit of Blakes Seven, with it making use of it's lower budget and it not being afraid to throw you around emotionally. The cast is great (Jodelle Micah Ferland who plays Five is only 24 and she has a ton of award wins and nominations), the storylines are solid. It's still incredibly frustrating it ended, especially on a hell of a cliffhanger.
haha, i had the same journey and the same joyful revelations... and then went on to watch Continuum which recycles Six and some other actors from other good shows

The expanse is on Amazon now, and Amazon is going to be doing some other side by stuff, so there definitely is a golden age of Science Fiction TV, it's just all on streaming platforms
I really liked Dark Matter and also Killjoys but the Expanse, tried to started it 3 times now, but never got further than episode 5 before i stopped again because of pure boredom and that i simply don't care at all about those persons.

All i remember is that detective guy with the hat that runs bored through the scenes and searches for something that was so forgetable that i already don't know about it. Oh .. something about racism against the poor thin guys from the Satur rings or whatever .. and a missing girl ? But it all was played soo wooden and full of boredom that it was like watching paint dry for me. I can only imagine it is a late starter where you have to sit through the first season and then it maybe finally starts .. but till now i simply haven't managed to do that .. maybe in 5 years after the 10th try .. lol
@@beldin2987 this is a show that rewards you if you pay attention. It is darker in tone and less campy than Dark Matter and Killjoys, and a lot more realistic. It also has characters with believable motives, ones who, yes, are jaded by living in a future that is a lot like present day in terms of its problems, because history repeats. But all of that changes, and fast. I really don't believe you made it past the 3rd episode. The 4th episode is some of the best action sci fi ever made, and the show in general masterfully mixes a slow burning mystery with intense, scientifically accurate action. and the 2nd and 3rd season are even better.
Shame that DM was cancelled. I quite liked it. My favourite was Five. Yes she was the (Young, inexperienced, but technically talented) Wesley Crusher of MD, but waaaaay better.
The showrunner said it wasn't influenced by Firefly, but they obviously shared influences from earlier works in the space outlaw genre. Cowboy Bebop and Blake's 7 for instance, which he confirmed were among Dark Matter's influences.
Does anyone know what the deal with One was ? Did they just write him to be a one season character ? Was he fired ? Did he not want to do it anymore ? If he was just supposed to be around for the first season it just seems really odd that out all the crew members its the first person you see that you never see again.

Joe Mallozzi and the other showrunners didn't want to kill One off; originally all seven main cast were supposed to survive throughout the series. The network execs (the same geniuses who later cancelled the show) thought it would be cool to imitate Game of Thrones and forced the showrunners to kill him off arbitrarily, because Marc's name was the first in the credits. Joe wasn't able to talk about it openly until after the cancellation, since he still needed to get along with Syfy until then. Even then, the showrunners planned to reveal that One had faked his death and bring him back as a recurring ally running his company. He used a more advanced clone that doesn't dissolve, and secretly hired Jace Corso to assassinate himself (without Corso knowing, of course) so Darius van Hoeven would think he was out of the way. There would have been an episode in Season 3 featuring the alternate universe Jace Corso that showed One alive in stasis being moved by his lawyer at the end, but Marc wasn't available so it was moved to Season 4 and replaced by "Isn't That a Paradox?" In Season 4, it would have been foreshadowed by the General turning up alive despite not dissolving when he died in Season 3.

I agree, the show was pretty good and solid from beginning to end. Sure, it had it's weak moments and low-budget problems but overall it held my interest. I vaguely remember watching season one and liking it, but I didn't know there was a second and third season. For some reason I thought it was cancelled on the cliffhanger of 6's betrayal. My favourite character was Zoie Palmer's android, a friendly face I wouldn't want to mess with. I guess I'll have to look for seasons two and three now :D

Pirates on a ship, operating on the frontier, on the run from not only the authorities, but a deeper mystery that continuously unfolds. I'm surprised you didn't mention this. This holds less true as the show progresses, of course.
5:02 I agree re Ruby Rose's HQ comedic acting but what do you think of the acting of 1, 2, and 6? To me the best performances are by those playing the gynoid, 3 and then 4.

i remember watching this at the same time of the expanse, and i though the first season was okay , and had some interest. But it did seem to lose something in the plot [and pick up a few things in someparts], and change of cast towards the end, as perhaps a last gasp at trying to gain some extra viewership.....But for me , i judge it at the end of the series , whether i was immersed in the character's , and would i miss the show , when it was cancelled?, and for me , i was quiet upset it was cut so soon, for i felt it had more to give, and was just another unfortunate loss, due to commercialism :(
I was kind of iffy on season 1, but the show got progressively better. I mean they kick off season 2 with a surprising major character death that convinced me the show was willing to take chances. Zoie Palmer was the easy stand out to me. You should see her in Cold Blooded, she deserves a hand for that role.
2:33 "inexperienced innocent"? Not when it comes to tech & physics matters. In that case, it's a question of 'how did you learn that, street urchin?' I can buy the practical hacking skills. The character is also ENFP ie Collaborator Guardian ie an extravert of intuitive type with subsidiary feeling.
For some reason my mind is trying to relate Dark Matter to Killjoys. I guess they hit some of the same notes while still being very different shows. That said, I'd love to see a breakdown on Killjoys to see if anyone else sees similarities or if that's just me.
I actually thought season 1 was a bit week. The low production value and slow world building felt like it left the audience hanging a bit. However, I thought the show just got better and better as it went a long, each season better then the last as the world building became more flushed out and intricate. Enjoy the next 2 seasons and Sci Fy....what were you thinking.
Another really good show sci-fi why is that did digital and practical well with Babylon 5 I think they had some of the starships and some of the space stations as models
I loved this show, I am a sucker for mystery box stories as long as it feels like they are going somewhere. It was an odd duck, it wasn't fast paced and spent a lot of time with just characters interacting and the cast really brought depth to it. The premise of are you the same person without the memories of your past actions was a really interesting one to explore. Still disappointed that Killjoys was renewed but Dark Matter cancelled as I found this a harder SF and more unique show.
This was an excellent show, I can't believe they cancel it after the third season which was 10 times better then Killjoy 3rd season and that green shit. Really disappointed it's cancelation.
Enjoyed DM quite a bit, felt it should have been given a wrap up season instead of giving Killjoys two more seasons, didn't even watch the 3rd season once the cancelation was announced, I hate unfinished series.
I'm not a big fan of scifi shows. But, I liked Dark Matter until it got to S3 - such a big let down. The show was all over the place with absolutely no direction
you were right about the android lifting elements from data. understandable. they even ****spoiler warning**** gave her an "emotion chip." after season 1 I lost interest quick. when the reveal ****spoiler warning**** of the crew member that pulled a Keyser Soze.
SYFY definitely cancelled the wrong show. This show was awesome with awesome characters. Keeping Killjoys was a mistake. Too bad no one picked this up for a season 3 and 4.
You mean 4 and 5. I'd be happy if they had kept both this and Killjoys, it wasn't an either-or. Bu they couldn't make money off merchandising Dark Matter because it was an acquisition from Canada and the LA Syfy office was upset that it was outperforming the Syfy Originals in the ratings. The person in the New York office who'd greenlit before had moved to another job, so it got cancelled.
My problem with SyFy shows over the last few years is that, to me at least, they feel like a production line of samey tv. Dark Matter, Kill Joys, The Expanse and if you want to go back a little further even Defiance all had pretty much the same characters in the same style of sci-fi, nothing really felt that different to me.
I found the first season to be quite weak, but the character development and stories really ramped up in season 2 and 3 - so really annoyed they didn't let it continue until season 5.
You mentioned the Gene Roddenberry show Andromeda with the finale of Discovery looking like it's about to place an old Federation ship (with the possibility of a very advanced ship AI) into a future where the Federation may have fallen do you think we might get a back door reboot of the Andromeda idea?
I like the actors and the scenario, but the budget is just too low and the writing isn't strong enough to let us overlook the major budget constraints. It's often trying to be Firefly but the writing and especially the dialogue just isn't good enough.
Exactly right imo. I enjoyed the show but after three seasons the cracks were beginning to show. Season 3 I watched because I really liked the cast. Meh would be a charitable description of the story.
Most people agree that the writing and dialogue only got stronger each season. Firefly wasn't one of its inspirations. They were Blake's 7, Farscape, Stargate, Cowboy Bebop, The Seven Samurai, The Dirty Dozen, The Shield, Thunderbolts, Code Geass and Gundam. The creator listed them. Any similarity with Firefly was due to both of them sharing influences. Firefly didn't invent the space outlaw genre.

This show, Kiljoys, and the Expanse had me really hoping for a new age Scfi on TV but it was not to be. It was fun while it lasted.

I still find it awesome that dark matter went from dudes wearing Paintball masks as boarding party oxygen equipment to advanced CGI
I really miss this show!
Dark Matter was just beginning to find its balance when it was canceled. If it had had a longer run, it would have been an all time classic.
I mourn this show as much as I did Firefly, SG Universe and Almost Human.... Even to this day 😢

It didn't suck but it did run out of good material. At first it was a adventure watching the characters stay alive

This is the only comic book adaptation that ive seen that is word for word the same as the book until issue 4
5:02 I agree re Ruby Rose's HQ comedic acting but what do you think of the acting of 1, 2, and 6? To me the best performances are by those playing the gynoid, 3 and then 4.

Blame the Sy-Fy channel. They pulled the plug because they weren't getting enough profits and canned it out of a hissy fit.
i remember watching this at the same time of the expanse, and i though the first season was okay , and had some interest. But it did seem to lose something in the plot [and pick up a few things in someparts], and change of cast towards the end, as perhaps a last gasp at trying to gain some extra viewership.....But for me , i judge it at the end of the series , whether i was immersed in the character's , and would i miss the show , when it was cancelled?, and for me , i was quiet upset it was cut so soon, for i felt it had more to give, and was just another unfortunate loss, due to commercialism :(
Keep looking around for Season 4 to awake out of a sleep pod and surprise us all.
Season 1 great for me(had its up and downs but a solid series).
And then the second and third season shows up and it all falls apart.

I was kind of iffy on season 1, but the show got progressively better. I mean they kick off season 2 with a surprising major character death that convinced me the show was willing to take chances. Zoie Palmer was the easy stand out to me. You should see her in Cold Blooded, she deserves a hand for that role.

The character is also ENFP ie Collaborator Guardian ie an extravert of intuitive type with subsidiary feeling.

For some reason my mind is trying to relate Dark Matter to Killjoys. I guess they hit some of the same notes while still being very different shows.
That said, I'd love to see a breakdown on Killjoys to see if anyone else sees similarities or if that's just me.

I actually thought season 1 was a bit week. The low production value and slow world building felt like it left the audience hanging a bit. However, I thought the show just got better and better as it went a long, each season better then the last as the world building became more flushed out and intricate. Enjoy the next 2 seasons and Sci Fy....what were you thinking.

I loved this show, I am a sucker for mystery box stories as long as it feels like they are going somewhere. It was an odd duck, it wasn't fast paced and spent a lot of time with just characters interacting and the cast really brought depth to it. The premise of are you the same person without the memories of your past actions was a really interesting one to explore. Still disappointed that Killjoys was renewed but Dark Matter cancelled as I found this a harder SF and more unique show.

This was an excellent show, I can't believe they cancel it after the third season which was 10 times better then Killjoy 3rd season and that green shit. Really disappointed it's cancelation.
Well if ain’t coming back for another season let’s bring it back in the way it was originally intended to be, a graphic novel.
Enjoyed DM quite a bit, felt it should have been given a wrap up season instead of giving Killjoys two more seasons, didn't even watch the 3rd season once the cancelation was announced, I hate unfinished series.
Season 1 is great....halfway into season 2 it all falls apart....
Dark Matter season 1 was fun, but I enjoyed it less and less with each subsequent season. I was sad to see it go, but I see why it was canceled.

It had the kind of mild charm Pauline Kael saw as characteristic of Star Trek TOS.

By the end they came across as a happily (though still snarkily) married couple.

I'm not a big fan of scifi shows. But, I liked Dark Matter until it got to S3 - such a big let down. The show was all over the place with absolutely no direction

SYFY definitely cancelled the wrong show. This show was awesome with awesome characters. Keeping Killjoys was a mistake. Too bad no one picked this up for a season 3 and 4.
You mean 4 and 5. I'd be happy if they had kept both this and Killjoys, it wasn't an either-or. Bu they couldn't make money off merchandising Dark Matter because it was an acquisition from Canada and the LA Syfy office was upset that it was outperforming the Syfy Originals in the ratings. The person in the New York office who'd greenlit before had moved to another job, so it got cancelled.

Being honest, I kind of want the effect of Dark Matter to merge with Killjoy.
My problem with SyFy shows over the last few years is that, to me at least, they feel like a production line of samey tv. Dark Matter, Kill Joys, The Expanse and if you want to go back a little further even Defiance all had pretty much the same characters in the same style of sci-fi, nothing really felt that different to me.

I love the Expanse and Altered Carbon, but was so bored with Dark Matter.
I found the first season to be quite weak, but the character development and stories really ramped up in season 2 and 3 - so really annoyed they didn't let it continue until season 5.

I'd say Star Trek Discovery is more space opera, while DM is a space western.

I like the actors and the scenario, but the budget is just too low and the writing isn't strong enough to let us overlook the major budget constraints. It's often trying to be Firefly but the writing and especially the dialogue just isn't good enough.

Most people agree that the writing and dialogue only got stronger each season.
Firefly wasn't one of its inspirations. They were Blake's 7, Farscape, Stargate, Cowboy Bebop, The Seven Samurai, The Dirty Dozen, The Shield, Thunderbolts, Code Geass and Gundam. The creator listed them. Any similarity with Firefly was due to both of them sharing influences. Firefly didn't invent the space outlaw genre.
