I sight my 223 and 243 at 50/200 yard method. In eastern Kentucky, it's all you'll ever need and for the most part hold center of a deer or coyote.

Most of the trajectory charts I see online show about a 3” drop using a 55-62g bullets. Your particular cartridge drops a couple more inches than most published data leading me to believe it’s a light load for that particular bullet.
I’m anxious to go to the range to run my own tests and compare them to your results. Great channel, so keep’em coming!

Thanks for sharing.🙂 The closest range to me is about 40 miles. Unfortunately due to constraints, it's "rifle" range is limited to only an 80 yd range. The closest range of 100 yds used to be nearly 75 miles. However it closed down..... Anyway, I only use my .223 rifles for coyote calling. And I find that when it comes to sighting in, I am sort of an "oddball". Most shots are taken within 75 yds. And I make it a rule to never shoot past 300.....Where the oddball part comes in, is that I sight in 3" high at 100 yds.

heres some numbers for my 222 out of my CZ 527, 50gr VMax heads-home loads with 21.4 grains of Reloader 7 Dyno'd at 3452 fps ! my drop at 1000 yards is 468 inch/44.7 MOA/13 MRAD wickedly accurate out to 500 yards, i had a Rem 700 ADL i think it was 223 but no matter what powder i used and the months of playing with powder loads/weights bullet heads/primers i just could not get anywhere near the accuracy of the 222 so the 223 got sold, love your vids here in the uk keep them coming.

Excellent! .223 is easily my fav caliber. I don’t care if you’re a beginner or a well seasoned shooter, everyone into rifles and bolt guns in particular, should have one of these. Super accurate, super fast ammo, minimal bullet drop, awesome to practice / target shoot with and almost no recoil, even though when you fire it you know it ain’t no rimfire gun. It’s also an excellent varmint hunting cartridge and while many might disagree, it’s also good for deer. Mind you I would suggest you become a decent shot if you’re gonna hunt deer with it as it’s no fun watching them suffer from a poor shot with a small caliber.

    • @kentuckyearl8202

I agree with favorite caliber. It was 243 until I purchased my AR15 recently. Now with the selection of ammo and ammo prices, I will be using it as my do all rifle. I can plink with steel case for $10, hunt coyotes for $15 a box of soft point, or for deer I choose the hollow point all copper bullet at $25. The cheapest 243 I've found recently is $40. I don't know about you but I just can't afford $2 a round.

With my AR in 5.56/223 with a 16 inch barrel I personally zero it at 36 meters for a maximum point blank range. I use this rifle for home defense and I've tested it as much as possible, I haven't been able to get to a range that I can shoot past about 300 meters but with the 36 meter zero I just hold dead center of the silhouette and I'm able to keep the rounds in the kill zone without even thinking about it. I'm hoping to find a place that I can shoot to about 400 meters but for now I know from 36 meters to about 300-325meters I don't have to think about it at all.

One more thing, a chronograph will allow for precision bullet drop compensation from any zero established in any wind/weather condition. Back in 2003 I shot in the National Long Range Championships. Before the competition I chronographed my loading and zeroed at 100 yards. In the first match, 600 yard match 531, an iron sight match, I adjusted my sights for the bullet drop compensation my range card listed for 600 yards from my 100 yard zero, same conditions as when zeroed. My first round I called “right-in-there” and indeed it was a pinwheel X causing me to go for record resulting in a perfect score and 14 X’s. Bottom-line is the chronograph will save a whole lot of time getting a handle on needed sight adjustment or hold to get good hits on targets at greater or shorter distances than zeroed distance.

My 20" (1-8 twist) AR works great for whitetail here in NY. 64gr Winchester Deer Season XP factory loads. Dropped a 175# doe at 125yds this year.
    Absolutely critical points:
    a) get a solid zero at 50, 100, or 200yds.
    b) practice, practice, practice.
    c) have a DOPE chart handy if you don't have time to run a few numbers through Strelok Pro or other quality BC on your phone.
    d) don't use a crappy optic.

I started zeroing everything at 25 yards. It's easier to see hits especially with small calibers, less walking to get from the table to the target, and it puts all my guns around 1.5" high at 100 yards, so I have a little extra range of a dead hold on for coyote and deer. In this .223 case, you would then only be about 3" low at 200, which on a 12x12 kill zone of a deer, would still be dead hold on center mass essentially.

I sight in if I can with a bore sighter, if not and I can pull the bolt I will bore sight to get on the paper, then I will secure the gun to be still, then move my cross hairs to where that first round hit, then I will fire another shot and it's usually within an inch of the bullseye, then I can make 1 more adjustment and I am through. I can't afford to waste too many rounds, but I am lucky that most everything I own likes the cheaper Federal or Hornady rounds. I have never had Remington ammo shoot worth a darn except their 200 gr core lokt in 35Rem. Federal will still outshoot the Rem in 35Rem, but I really do like that bonded core lokt in expansion tests I ha e seen. My little 336 Marlin hates all the 150gr loads..it's all over the place maybe 5 to 7 inch groups. That 336 is from 1978 and the guy my Dad bought it from for me as a kid had refinished the wood. He was a furniture maker and it's so beautiful I hate to take it in the woods. I like taking my Savage 110 in 30-06 composite and 150gr Federal Power Shoks hunting most of the time. I have it sighted in about 3/4 in high at 100. That should put me near dead on at 200 IIRC

Great video. Breathing will move your hit up or down, and trigger squeeze will move your hit left and right. Also, 50 yard zero will be 200 yards as well. Should be slightly high at 100. Try that next.

Breathing is not problematic until a very unqualified coach tells the student to watch his breathing which then precludes the student from just unconsciously shoot during his natural respiratory pause. Here are the things most likely to produce vertical bullet dispersion:
      1. Poor follow through
      2. Changing sight picture
      3. A very low position
      4. Changing sight alignment
      5. Failure to maintain proper sight alignment
      6. Changing distance from eye to sight
      7. Varying rifle butt position in shoulder
      8. Position of left elbow wrong (rifle fired from right shoulder)
      9. Not enough head pressure

For hunting purposes maximum point blank range zero is the most useful. However with the .223 caliber, the range at which bullet velocity slows to 2,200 fps becomes the maximum effective range for ethical kills. Somewhere between 150-175 yards with a 60 grain bullet.

  • @Pyle81
    @Pyle81 2 ปีที่แล้ว

So here's something for you to try. Now before we go to fare let me explain what im doing. I hand load EVERY round of rifle ammo I shoot. EVERY ROUND is fire formed to each rifle. Its doesn't matter if its my custom built 700 or one of my many custom built AR Predator rifles. And typically use the 55gr Hornady V-Max from Predators or the SMK 77gr BTHP bullets. All barrels use either the 1-7 or 1-8 Twist. Speeds in the 700 are 2790-2855 fps with the 77's, And 2950 fps in the AR's with the 55gr Hornady V-Max. All bullets are loaded out to magazine length.
So the AR i typically use for Coyotes has a Pulsar XQ-50-LFR Thermal optic on top of it. And gets zeroed at 50 yrds. Ballistics on these rounds with the 26.5 gas of CFE-223 powder (2950fps) will also be zeroed again due bullet rise/arch at 187-193 yards again. Then these bullets start there decent downwards. At 200 yrds they average less than a 1/8" drop. Most of the time its not even measurable. Transition from supersonic to subsonic with this load in a 1-8 twist 20" barrel is about 490 yrds depending on sea level and barometric pressure. Bullet drop at 490 yrds is about 3.8"-3.9" on a good day. All of these tests where shot with a Yankee Hill Machine Nitro 30 suppressor attached,, with a 22cal.end cap installed also. The results are nearly identical when shot from the Remington 700 custom built with its 22" Krieger barrel with the same suppressor attached.
Now jump to the 77gr SMK bullets and threw the 700 with the Krieger 1:8 barrel zeroed at 200 also. This rifle will hold groups with these bullets between 0.3"- .05" using 24.0 grs of IMR-8208-XBR and match grade primers at 800 yrds. With less than a 12" drop at about 1000 ft above sea level. All factors being equal (solid rest, seasoned bore, wind under 5mph and so on) The key to both of these loads is simple. Load to magazine length, weight each charge with in +/- .01 grains. Use good, not 2nds or blemished bullets. Case preparation is also key, Primer flash holes need to be inspected and deburred it is"ESSENTIAL" for positive ignition with the 8208-XBR powder. Seriously, you can see the difference in rounds that where prepped the correct way and those that where not at these distance. And we often will engage targets at 1000 yrds with this round. Only non living, as at this distance with a 77gr bullet in a 223 case. I don't consider it good hunting, or human to target even Predators or Vermon at distance over 800 yrds. Thats me and guys I shoot with opinion, your may differ and thats your choice. The 22-250 and the 6mm & 6.5mm rifles are definitely more suited for those distance. And definitely more human out that fare. Try some of the above-mentioned information, I think you may like it.

With a 100 yard zero your 50 yard result will be low by half the distance from your scope axis to your bore axis. A 223 is shooting almost dead flat to 50 yards and its pure geometry.

The literal definition of a zero is when bullet path and line of sight intersect and the resulting value in any form of measurement is ZERO. What this means is a zero is nothing more than a starting point for a predicted need. Expect targets will appear at 100 yards then zero for 100 yards but, commit to memory the hold or sight elevation adjustment needed if any to engage targets at other distances. In other words, hitting where aimed is not a fixed condition unless the shooting distance is fixed.

  • @mefirst5427

My closest 200 yard range has about a 2% down slope from shooting position to target, about 12 feet vertical drop if I did math correct. 55 gr, 62 gr, 69 gr the ballistics drop chart come with ammo are out of whack. I finally figure out my hold is same has 100 yard.

Maybe you could have added the scope adjustment to cover 200 yards? 5 inches at 200 is 2.5 inches at 100 so if you have 1/4 MOA scope 10 clicks to compensate? Would be great for you to walk us through that…

My understanding, is, there is no "best". There's just what you, want to achieve with YOUR gear/rig, for what purpose. Everyone is different, and wants different results for their different needs.

I'm new at this but you said that at 400 it dropped 4.2in but, if I'm reading this correctly, that drop is for 200. It should have dropped 37.5 inches..... maybe I'm more confused than I think.

I have a 6-18 coming and looking to get a pricey Bushnell made in Japan since I ce had luck with their cheap scopes and Nikons . I actually like the Bushnell s and I do not care what anyone thinks because I ve used them for decades ALOT ! They make some very nice cpl grand scopes between a grand and two but who wants to lay that much right ?

Another great one, and that's some fine shooting. What's the max humane-kill range for that set-up on a white tail? 250 yards? The energy drops off pretty fast. If it's 250, how much less is it from a 16 inch AR15 barrel?

Just incase you didnt know. All military marksman sight in the 5.56 at 30 yrds and it equals zero at 300 with green tip ammo. At 750 meters its supposed to equal 12" of drop. Since there are millions of military members who have follwed this practice. I would take it as some good info!

I do like the bolt actions myself I can find thesweet spot for seating depth pretty easy and most of the time still clip I bought a 5.56 in a ar platform it will shoot the 63 grain Sierra and still clip if I go to 69 f. I have to single feed to get the accuracy worst gun I ever learned to shoot I guess I was always used to shooting a conventional stock gun if I haven’t shot in a pretty good while I’ll hit the magizine button instead of bolt realse on first shot when chArging lol lol
