I'm so glad Sterling changed his mind on reissues, the Stingray retro is THE bass and I am thrilled to have one.

His bench playing at the end is worth sticking around for!

Smooth really is the best word to describe the sound of that bass!

Very pleased to own an 'old Smoothie', its a beautiful bass and by far the best Stingray I even laid hands on... thanks Sterling !

I got turned on to the StingRay in 78 when Louis Johnson funked/slapped it up on the Brothers Johnson's album BLAM. The tone was nasty, just what I liked!!! I then went out and got my own 1980 white StingRay and it changed my life. Music was all I gonna do!

Nothing can beat a Sting Ray , a Fender P comes close but Sting Ray is the Boss

      Each have their own tone.
P bass has warmer and deeper low end.
Stingray will punch through a concrete wall with authority..
They're both designed by the God Father himself: Leo Fender..

I always loved the feel and sound of the Stingray. But I really learned something here in this video in hearing Sterling explain the history between Fender and Music Man. Now it all makes sense. Could Music Man be in better hands? No, not possible. PLUS he's a Bass player (and a good one) So yea, I love the heritage explained in the video, and it lives on. Glad you're there.

i was taking bass lessons about 3 years ago and my teacher has a 1976 Music Man Stingray and I had a new MM Stingray Stealth. Honestly the 76 had not only a deeper more rounded sound i like the comfort and playability better, I owned a Fender P bass custom shop 58. Rickenbacker 4003 50th anniversary jazz bass Mike lull thunderbird 2 Gibson Thunderbirds 1991 and the 50th anniversary gold one. The 76 to me was the best i ever played. i love my Stealth it is my favorite bass. His bass was one of the 1st 200 produced and he was playing a jazz show in NYC and Steve Miller offered him 10k and he turned it down. He was also the original owner. i'am torn I want another Stingray i want either the Old Smoothie or the new neck thru in all black

I love the musicman stingrays, it's the only bass I want to play, I'm torn between either one of there new passive basses the caprice (just wish they made it more n a 5 string) or a stingray neckthrough with two humbuckers.

I took bass lessons 5 years and have been playing 7 on my $70 Monterey bass, sold it a week ago and bought some old rusted stirngray replica for $100. I’m far from poor. Just have never seen the point in spending large sums for brands

Best bass ever made. Not as aggressive as the stingray but punchy and deep. A step above the p bass but better than a regular Stingray

Musicman basses will forever be a favorite of mine. I still have my vintage 1979 Stingray OLDE SMOOTHIE (Natural/Maple Neck) Bought back in 1980..Although, I changed the strings over the years, STILL FUNKY!!

"Old Smoothie" IS a very early Stingray but it wasn't the very first prototype. But that particular Prototype DOES still survive. Here it is.
    i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/guitarman91/1stingrayprototype.jpg
As you can tell, it's VERY crude, it has a Fender P-bass neck, the bridge of a Fender Mustang bass and the egg shaped pickguard is upside-down.

I remember back in 76 the Stingray went for around 450 dollars new. There was on guy out on Long Island New york who sold them.Couldnt find them too tough in The city. They need to go back to original designs on all the stingrays

    • @silverdroid

That seems hella expensive for the time! I believe in 1977 a Fender Jazz Bass was $280 USD.

    • @whichoneisbetter8902
      @whichoneisbetter8902 6 ปีที่แล้ว

24 fret only for beginner, or smaller player - bug regular bass like fender and musicman is professional they dont do that... try to buy the ibanez or dean basses...very cheap
