Yeah, I remembered buying Haunting Ground back in 2013. Blew me away that it almost looked like an early PS3 tech demo, especially no loading times on every room ( with exception of in-game cutscenes ).
if anyone wondering the calm soothing song in the background is from Tomb Raider Legend.

Great list! Ghosthunter in progressive scan mode was absolutely stunning for a PS2 release. One of my favorite atmospheric titles.
In case you haven't played it i recommend checking out Primal, it's by the same team and takes place in the same universe. It's also a very pretty game
@@nikodem123asdf Thanks for the recommendation! Played through it a couple of times. Combat is exhausting, but sooo pretty and really great writing and character. Would have loved to see SCE Cambridge continue to develop more games..
@@Nate1979 the combat is the worst part it's very tedious and they don't do a good job explaining how Scree is life battery for your other forms, in my first playthrough I got to the very end without figuring out I could heal my transformations.
Those are some pretty cool pick outs. I really do need to look into Cold Fear and Rumblr Roses one day. Was also funny to see the Bouncer here too, I remember that blowing my mind back then.
Well worth giving them a go!
Cold fear is awesome
PS2 was undeniably a budget powerhouse, versatile in the right hands.
But these videos always makes me wonder how would Dreamcast perform if it had the chance of getting evolved devkits and developers with 5 years of experience.
I am pretty sure the DC would have outshined the Ps2 for the rest of the generation, just like it bested it at the beginning... WIthout getting to technical, graphically the DC was just more capable.

The Sly Cooper series has always stood well against the test of time with its graphics and artstyle. Easily one of my all time favorite franchises in my top 10.

2 snd 3 were so good. Some of the best to this day.
@@mymusicpaws Yeah it literally aged like fine wine. And the PS3 ports isn't so bad either. You can go into the options menu and I think if you widen the screen, it will cover the exposed borders without ruining the picture. Definitely one of the better PS2-PS3 ports. Not perfect (like Mz. Ruby fight), but still better.

Genji has gorgeous colors. That game even lags against bosses for how much it handles
Glad you mentioned Rumble Roses. As a wrastlin fan I love that each character has a babyface persona and a heel persona, it makes the story mode twice as long. I never had any Xbox system until recently, but tracked down the sequel and it pales in comparison to the PS2 original. Appreciate your great lists.

The onimusha series was before it's time. I actually discovered onimusha by accident at a game stop many moons ago and I still play the whole series in order once a month 🤙⛩️🗾

The ps2 had loads of graphical (and computational) potential, just that many developers couldn’t wrap their heads around the two vector units. Though if one knew what they were doing, they could make real magic happen with the ps2
The PS2 was the weakest console of that gen, unless you count the Dreamcast.
@Dean Satan multiplatform games all looked nearly exactly the same on GameCube and XBOX while the PS2 version almost everytime had lower res textures, screen tearing and missing post processing effects. It's just a fact, fanboy. PS2 was waaay behind on the technical level.

Look at Gran Turismo 3 and 4 and it makes you realize that when cross console games looked worse on the PS2 it was just the developers' fault.
Loved Onimusha 3, you should try the last main game they made on the PS2 Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, it was more battle focused but looked great for the PS2 at the time

Seeing the rumble roses entrance cutscene instantly reminded me of the wrestle kingdom games, no shock to me they were made by the same developers! Way ahead of their time visually

Dragon Quest VIII really is an amazing experience.
Nice picks. I tried Cold Fear when it came out and it just didn’t grab me back then, but I might revisit it now. And the Sly Cooper series. One of my all time favorites. There’s a rumor floating around the internet that Sony is working on either remake or new entry into the series. Fingers crossed. Great content as always.
BIg plus for Haunting Ground. It's funny that Outlast was so loved a decade later for "inventing" its hide-and-seek gameplay where you had no weapons, but Haunting Ground had already done the same formula before. Also, the dog is actually in Resident Evil 4 as well as an easter egg.
Oh gosh the bouncer, we used to play it all the time when it was one of only a few PS2 games we owned. It’s influence at the time can’t be understated everyone I knew was talking about how amazing it looked. Eventually the shine started to fade compared to later games of the generation but it was still a fun and easy game to pickup. Definitely will be popping it into my PS3 on my next day off just to relive it once more.
that rumble roses bit at 4:35 is just classic
bloomin love cold fear, remember being blown away with the way the ship rocks side to side, although I can imagine some getting motion sickness playing it!!!

Great pick ups, recently I was shocked by a japanese mech fighting ps2 game based on an anime series. Zoids Struggle brings huge animal mechs that move incredibly accurate to its organic representation. Also the lighting effects and the fast paced combat it´s really remarkable. Grandia III is another one I would highlight
zoids was first a toy line and cartoon in the 80s
Motorstorm Arctic Edge is one of my favorites on the PSP! Never tried it on the PS2.
14:18 Samanosuke Akechi is the main character of Onimusha 1 and also one of the two playable characters in Onimusha 3. The other being Jacques Blanc, played by Jean Reno. Akechi Hidemitsu is a real life samurai that Samanosuke is throught to be based on.

Haunting Ground is a great spiritual successor to Clock Tower

Great channel - I got my copy of Haunting Ground for 2.99 in Gamestation years ago, its still in prestine condition. The NTSC version goes for silly prioces now though

I'm surprised you didn't mention Dark Cloud 2. Not only is it up there with the cell shade of sly and dragon quest, it's one of the most unique and best gaming experiences I've ever had. There's so much detail throughout I wish more games had that much care put into them
definitely a good game, but the level design/dungeons early on were very repetitive. Very memorable game tho

Buyers beware: PS3/Vita ports of Sly Cooper are missing level commentary (patched for PSN downloads ONLY), and the forced widescreen often reveals things meant hidden, making cutscenes awkward.
digital devil saga is definitely impressive to see. it's pretty much always running 60 frames, battle cut scenes are slick.

For a graphical showcase on the PS2 Primal should have been there. It was doing some very impressive stuff at the time, among them in the lighting department.
really graphicly impressive when your running them all through an emulator enhancing the ps2 graphics past what it could originally do.

Motorstorm Arctic Edge looks so insane❤
The Sly games were awesome. They were always a bit underrated in comparison to the two other big Sony platformer/action games like Ratchet and Clank and Jak, but they were fantastic games in their own right. The art style and world designs were so eye catching and pretty

Onimusha 3 was one of my favorites back then. I remember getting stuck during one of the Jacques sections and ended up deleting my file lol! Either that or it got lost when my memory card got corrupted. I don't remember. Haunting Ground is one game I want to try because of the Clock Tower connections, but I haven't found a copy yet. I did have it on my Gamefly list but unfortunately it got sold out. Maybe one day! I dunno if I want to pay a buttload just to play it though.

What type of video output or adapter do you use for PS2? It is so crystal clear. I'm using a HDMI adapter but it very dark and blurry.
He's using PCSX2 a emulator for PC, and the result is bad, games loose completely their original visuality

Dragon quest is goated on the ps2. Hands down one of if not THE best dragon quest.
Interesting note too if your emulating it on your pc/laptop, Ive played 5 games with two being turn base rpgs, and out of all DQ's ran the smoothest and scaled up its resolution with least problems. I was playing it in 1080 and it looked like the recent DQ that dropped for PS4 and XBOX one

Ha, Rumble Roses was a personal favorite - underneath that DOA-esque exterior lied a pretty decent wrestling game. The Smackdown references would not be that far-fetched, given that Yuke's Interactive, who developed those games for THQ at the time, developed the game for Konami. "Zero Fighter" Reiko, complete with her "Look to the Sky" entrance theme was my favorite. 🙂
Never finished Cold Fear but got it because I was a fan of DarkWorks' Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare.

I heard that the Onimusha remaster didn't do well enough so the release of 2 and 3 were cancelled. That's extremely disappointing if true.
Haunting Ground is also one of the few PS2 titles that supports progressive scan.

Of course I know Rumble Roses. I bought it early on. The gameplay actually IS well done. Even if all the characters had been trolls and goblins, it still would've been a fun game.
I haven't watched yet but I would hope that Haunting Ground will be on the list... that is if it hasn't appeared on the other 2 :)
Every time I play Haunting Ground I’m amazed on how good it holds up today. Still one of greatest use of the camera angles, almost movie like!
