With what Nikon has accomplished in the past two years, with it's camera bodies, the amazing lenses and the incredible FW updates, these are exciting times to be shooting Nikon. As a Z8 user, I really hope they bring Bird AF and pre-capture RAW to the next FW update. The rest I can patiently wait for down the road. Thanks for another great talk Matt....hope you ditch the cold in short time.

@dicekolev5360 lol dude imagine being mad at this...first of all , the z8 bird af firmware is coming in January so...second, rhe z9 is still different, bigger batery and vertical grip, bigger recording time and better handling of heat dissipation, arguably the best weather resistance in any nikon body. so these differences make the z9 a different camera than the z8. you can sit happily at the top 😅

@@dicekolev5360The Z 8 does not have the same hardware specification as the Z 9 so I think it is all right for the Z 8 users to have the same (software) features as the Z 9, nothing is wrong with that. It definitely is going to help strengthening Nikon market which in turn we shall get various benefits as well.
And I agree with you about buying the Z 9 which I did on the last Monday 11/12/2023. It took only three days to have my Z 9 shipped from Japan and delivered it to me. Needless to say that I have been spending the last three days playing with it, took thousands photographs of birds and I found it to be very impressive.
I hope that all Z 8 users are going to get this “Bird Eye AF” before Christmas ✌️

The most beneficial feature for me would be precapture in raw. For sports, if it's a particular player's turn to get photographed, the burst can be used when they're likely to make a play. For example, with a baseball shortstop, the burst could start as the ball is pitched. The shortstop might be involved in 10-20% of the plays, so only the burst where they are involved would be saved.

Quite honestly, my Z9 is everything I want in a camera. Further enhancements are icing on the cake. Having said that, I understand Nikon's need to keep the Z9 ahead in capability of my Z8. But, as mentioned below, I'd love to have Bird AF and pre-capture on my Z8, so I hope as the Z9 becomes even more capable, it will allow these features to pass down to the Z8.

The number 1 feature Nikon could enable the Z9,...Z8,...to be able to do is READ the IR emitted by Nikon Speedlights! But wait, the hardware on MILC cameras WON'T allow such capability! That said, when you work an extreme low light event,...inside of venues light hotels, etc., the Z9 also struggles to focus in those low light conditions! To be honest, had the Z9 not had the embedded Wireless Transmitter, I would have picked up a 2nd (used) D850 and be quite happy given that the D850,...even not having "Eye-AF" is still an excellent DSLR!,...and the Focus System works well with the IR sensors emitted by the Nikon Speedlights. Now, if conditions are such where the Z9 can gain focus,...then it still king of all Nikon cameras,...Hands Down! Full Stop!!

The beauty of the firmware updates is it's like getting a new camera with the improvements. It also benefits Nikon as it buys them time to develop even better products. If this update comes to the game, the Z9 will continue to be a top shelf camera and will drive Nikon sales for the Z9 even higher. I do believe it is time for an updated speedlight as the SB5000 is getting long in the tooth.

Amen to the speedlight update. No matter how well Nikon Z bodies see in low light, they don't hold a candle to their DSLRs paired with focus assist pattern from Nikon speedlights. Hoping Nikon comes out with a green assist light (only light pattern Z mirrorless sensors can "see"), or some other focus assist technology that will allow instantaneous and accurate focus acquisition in low to no light scenarios.

I’d REALLY like Nikon to enable resolution selection for RAW files. S, M, L, just like we can do for JPG & HEIF. That would also open up additional speed options as a result of smaller file sizes.
    Pre-cap in RAW please.
Lastly, allow us to select Subject Detection options more easily / quickly. Pair Subject Detection with AF Area Mode as it appears in the i-Menu - but we need a button map for this.

Yes, but upon purchase of the Z8, there wasn’t much in terms of feature gap, which is why I bought it. Had they made it clear that the Z8 would only get 50% or less of the updates as the Z9 going forward, I would have reconsidered which one to buy. They shouldn’t widen the gap. Prioritize the features to the Z9 first? Or even a bit more - like 30 fps RAW only in the Z9? That’s fine to me. But pre-capture should be in both and any improved AF should be in both.

If a Z8 user, don't hold your breath, Nikon has forgotten about us, I guess they regretted making a Z8, a lot of Z8ers can afford the Z9, but wanted a smaller more convenient body, the only thing I needed from the Z9 is the GPS, but did not want the extra wight.

Hi Matt - thanks for the vid -- if the update as rumoured is delivered then what is the need for the "H" version. Most sports/action shooters like the ability to generate 45.7MP files with relatively low noise which gives them huge potential to crop in/adjust as they wish to. I shoot with Nikkors longest and highest performance super teles and I also want to shoot a little wider than I may ultimately need and then have headroom to crop in tighter in post -- if you shoot for a layout you need space for text and art. If you shoot for the subject in a frame then tighter is better, shooting for tablet/phone much tighter tends to work better (initially at least) - 45.7 MP gives you all three. Whereas 24MP the latitude is far far less. Pro-Sport guys/gals with accreditation working for a top loutlet get to shoot from the best spots they often don't need what I want as a predominately wildlife guy. So the Z9h may work great for them -- remembering the Z9 already has Medium sized JPG/HEIF which is sized for them and you can shoot it at 60fps with pre-capture.
I am one of many who asked Nikon/NPS to please add - 30-35MP; 19-24MP; and smaller sizes as RAW via interpolation (not just pixel binning) -- so YES please 45.7MP and higher FPS; very YES please pre-capture RAW; but also let us have some of the other SIZEs in RAW too -- even if there is no FPS bounce.
Obviously the Z9 should have all the best of what is in every other Z body AND soon. I believe the Z8 will follow suit. I do not know if either the Z8 or Z9 can technically perform the same as the ZF (which had a redesigned IBIS) with Focus Point VR -- I would be interesting to see what benefit Focus Point really brings relative to everything else one can do on a Z9/Z8. Noting that for the bulk of my wildlife I shoot with shutter speeds in excess of 1/1250th so VR/IBIS does not really make much impact when shooting at these shutter speeds. BUT for slower work and vid -- well that is more interesting.

Hello Matt, I hope most of what you say is correct, investment in Z9, is a priority to me, not the Z8. After time, I agree, these advanced firmware updates need to show Nikon supporting big investors (pros) as they have been doing in the past. I would also hope even more auto focus advances are being looked at. Like, more than one recall group so switching from animal to person etc. can be just a button press at speed. The Z8 is a top quality high performing camera, but has to be one step under the Z9. If a Z9H appears, then that sounds like the Nikon I have always known and love. …… Great for-thought info, fingers crossed! Thank you for a great channel, TonyH

Matt, I would take anything Nikon Rumours says with a very very big pinch of salt, after all, these are the people that made massive claims about FW v2.0 for the Z6/7ii and things like 3D tracking being added as part of that update. Funnily enough, no such thing has happened and in fact Nikon have doubled down on not updating either camera instead. Thankfully I now have a Z8 (which is fabulous) and now we're at least going to get bird tracking sometime next year, hopefully they'll also sort out some basic usability issues like banks not being linked and drive mode not being stored as part of a bank. There's a long list of things they need to improve upon...

I believe this tech has been in the pipeline for years. They are reliant on new gear offerings. When Nikon came out with the D3, it had the initial D5 prototype. Companies always have plans for the long term. It's like a music artist - a record company wants three albums' worth of work before they sign a group. Car companies have the 2027 models ready when they release the 2024. Companies have done this for years. They may alter the model when the time comes, but they have the initial plans for the next firmware or product.

I think Nikon knows the Z9 is where the pro ‘photographers’ live so it needs fast settings for sports, fast shutter speeds, pre-record for wildlife and sports, as well as landscape stuff for capturing flying ducks etc., Now the Z8 is the True/ Hybrid and I think Nikon will lay off some of the SUPER PRO ‘photographer’ features and gear this more as the cinema camera, easier form factor to rig up, add a v mount and large battery, and although it’s fast I think Nikon will gear this up as a more cinema… Z9 GRTS ALL OF IT, Z8 gets all the Cinema stuff and 1 or 2 of the PRO PHOTO stuff… BUT it comes together…
The Z8 $4000 if you think Nikon is going to LOAD UP THE Z9 and give the Z8 NOTHING for 6 months I think there’s no way…

With the evolution these days a lot of photographers had to dive into video, Im one of them, and I don't want to buy another system just for that, there are many features that sony has and Nikon could do with just firmware updates. For example 240 FPS at 1080. Sometimes I feel Nikon wants to impress and not be functional. Who cares about 8K? at this level very few will use it as a professional tool. Please, if you have a voice with Nikon, ask them to implement it. I also dream with a video specific camera from Nikon to use that fantastic glass. PLEASE!!! Btw, I sent them an email about this.

IDGAF about the Z9/Z8. but i think the Z6-III is long over due.
maybe it takes so long because it gets a new sensor with nikon's own dual sensitivity pixel sensor that hopefully is another good step forward to give us a few dB of SNR/dynamic in the direction of low light. whatever, it needs to come 2024!

Very novel algos proposed with the 45-11-11, and I like that this would bring some element of 'chance' back to photography in a realm where everything feels increasingly perfect at catching moments. If the Z9 can fluidly move between 30 and 120 FPS it would be interesting to see if it could be mapped to a ring. Oooo. 2.5 seconds at 120fps.. to get to 24p you can slow to 20% which means it has a factor of 5? so 2.5X5= 12.5 seconds at 24p? that's more than a trad 8 second shot. Interesting. I want open gate!!! FW5!!!

What would put Nikon in nearly every video conversation, would be high speed videography. Nikon could go lets say 250 fps in FF for 5 second, lets say 10-20 second in Apsc mode. 500 fps for 3-5 second in Apsc and 2.3 crop. Even a 500 fps plus in the 2.3 crop mode would put it another world. You would see thousands of video on youtube/tiktok with those dramatic nearly freeze frame slowmo with dancers, action, product shots, music videos etc.

The Z8/Z9 has about 2GB of buffer and a 15fps memory bus transfer speed when lossless compressed RAW and top CF-B card in single card write mode. 30fps LC RAW bursts would only work for maybe 2 seconds before you get throttled down to 15fps. In pre capture, it may even be less than 1 second since 30 frames would perpetually be in the buffer at the start of the sequence. Most likely, this is only going to work with HE* or HE RAW. I will happily be wrong. As for Z9 vs Z8, yes, the Z9 should get more and get it first. Z9 should get all these new goodies and the Z8 the previous goodies (bird AF, auto capture, etc.) now in December, and the Z8 gets the now goodies six months from now.

All this sounds great Matt, even if 10% of it is true! When , I bought my Z9 (my first ever Nikon) I predicted that the camera had more power than its feature set at the time indicated! My one big ASK to Nikon is please give us hybrid users Shutter Angle! Plus please collaborate with DJI and Tilta so that the DJI gimbals can receive bluetooth camera control and that the Z cameras can talk with the Tilta Nano II controllers! The dream is also to open up Ethernet on the Z9 to work with Audinate’s Dante audio networking system if possible! 👍🏾🙏🏾😎. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇸🇪🇹🇹

If this turns out to be true, this will be the clincher for me to finally trade in my Z6 & Z6II or put up the cash for a Z8 or Z9. This would be because the gulf in tech has grown that large and in my use case for weddings and events, this would make hit rate and quality significantly better. Up to this point, I’ve invested in the glass, keep up the great work and get well soon!

I don't know how much we can expect from all these new updates, but I have the impression of hearing a lot of fantasies, and when you fantasize too much, you're quickly disappointed.
    I'd already like :
    - a 1s pre-trigger, even if only at 20Mpix rather than 45mpix
    - the bird AF to appear on the Z8.
For the rest, for the moment, I don't want to dream about... we'll see.
I like the idea of 2s ultra burst... that's often enough.

Hi Matt hope you feel better soon, and now to my opinion on cameras and speed, because frankly I see no reason for about more than 20 frames per second for most, if not too much for most too . Yes Global Shutter is really good in some cases or for typically professional sports photographers.
I also agree that Nikon is not making a Sony copy, and this firmware will do well for typical professional Nikon sports photographers, but the rest of us, regardless of brand, only need these incredible frames per second in a few cases.
I've also been doing bird and sports photography for several years, and when I got the option of 20 frames per second with the Sony A9 I thought I'd never need more for my kind of photography, and I still think that regardless of the Sony A9III. So Sony won't be able to sell me the Sony A9III, even though it might be cheaper in a few years, because I don't want to give so much cash for something I don't need very often!

It continues to justify the initial investment in the z9. The value add firmware updates both provide fantastic capability improvements, but the ROI for Nikon is that they are staying ahead of the competition by doing so, attracting new users, and I keep buying new z mount Nikon lenses to use with the z9 because it remains so good. I just indulged in the plena to use with the z9 and I am blown away and totally obsessed. Thanks for your fantastic videos 👍

Pre-capture in raw would be a big one for me. I'v been saying for a long time even 5fps would be great for bird photography, because they move so fast it's hard to react in time, but if they can do anywhere close to 20 that would be insane.

Then when nothing happens it can be open season about how “disappointed” we are with Nikon. I confess I am solidly in the “what?” group here. I will be delighted to be wrong. @@ytr8989 Well that’s what the rumour says. The problem so far is……… where is it?
This game of rumours has a down side. The rumour creates hype and a huge wish list. So people start expecting all sorts of things. Even if a new piece of firmware is released,it will automatically be followed by an avalanche of complaints that it is “not good enough” and they HAVE to do more.
The question is…… do we REALLY REALLY NEED this? Are you certain?
Rumours create the hype. I much prefer a surprise announcement with a few nice features.

Well... For me personally, I would love to see the bird AF on my Nikon Z8... But what's even more important, I hope, that the update fixes the off-camera flash problems, that appeared with FW 1.01... Since the update I haven't been able able to use my portable studio flashes (Rollei HS Freeze 6 and 6s) anymore... On every photo you see the shutter on one side. What annoys me the most in this case is that the Nikon support blamed the flash manufacturers. Well, everything worked fine before the firmware update. Because of that, I don't think, it's the manufacturers' issue. So my highest hope is now, that I can use my flashes again after the next update.
Again, great video! Get well soon, Matt! Kind regards from Hamburg, Germany
