Andy: I’m one of those “new starters” and have learned loads from watching your channel over the past year. Thank you! I can tell that you put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into creating this video - as you do with all of your content - but it’s particularly evident in this instance. This is a gem sure to become reference material for new entrants.

Being a seasoned gun owner (including FACs), I would like to add to Andy’s excellent rifle review with a couple practical issues for first time users. (1) Decide why you want to shoot and talk to lots of shooters, dealers, and watch Andy’s videos. That will help define your purchase options. (2) Be realistic with your budget. (3) Fun back garden shooting - a good pellet catcher is essential and add some cloth to reduce the “ping” sound that may annoy neighbours. Tin can plinking will make a noise.(5) Pest control needs a lots of practice and skill to be humane. (6) The law and safety are paramount, including storage of rifles. Enjoy.

@@daveshaw5293I use a scrap cabinet. Its rear wall is padded with two layers of scrap rug which allows me to suspend any kind of plinking targets in front of it. It is amazing how long those rugs last. If you have a higher than 5,5 ft/lbs "device" just add as many layers as you feel safe with. I can even place a 17x17cm steel pellet trap in it for the paper target work. I also lay out some square feet of painter's rug in front of it because many pellets don't stay in the cabinet. This for easier cleanup inside and to avoid pollution of the soil with lead outside.

That was bloody fantastic .. im by no means a beginner ( 61 yrs old & shooting since I were 13 ) BUT just watching this vid kinda ( and I know its a strange thing to say ) RESET my thinking of the whole airgun experience .. bought back memories from the early 70's .. ahhhhhh great days ...
The best thing is though , getting down the range ( tomorrow will be the first time ever for my mrs , together with her very first rifle I bought her last week ) its the banter and the chat .. the togetherness of like minded people , together with heaps of snacks and soft drinks .. .. fantastic fun .. Andy, from an ex vet, thanks mate, learnt a lot about weapons and rules I had no idea about. I hope other ex forces chaps get involved in this sport. Totally different rules from my Forces days, but even with an air rifle, I find myself applying all of the stuff we get taught in regards to shooting, without having to worry about all the 'other stuff' that using firearms in the armed forces entails... Plinking and target work really is therapeutic for me and I am sure it would be for others with similar experiences.
I have tried to watch and like all of your videos, but confess to being very new to the sport, and cramming somewhat, but really want to show my appreciation to both you and Mr.'s AA . Lovin' your work big guy& lass....

    Nicely done Andy 👍👏👏
    Born again novice here and a couple of points to add that you have said before that really helped to make me decide on a quality springer as opposed to CO2 or PCP (apart from cost, of course);
    1) CO2 canisters will probably leak out if you don’t use them during a session.
    2) Even cheap PCP pumps are also required/best to have a moisture stripper or you risk long term damage due to moisture damaging internals. So buyer beware.
Keep up the good work, my friend. 👍👍

Hello Andy. Thank you because like any beginner in the pcp, I was faced with several dilemmas to find a beginner's rifle at the best value for money at the cheapest possible price in 20joules 4.5mm with regulator, bezel and manual pump. You convinced me to buy a hawke 3-9x50 ao mildot (119€) rather than a range of scopes from 40 to 80€. The pr900w gen2 rifle (204€) and a 3-stage manual pump vevor (38€).Total 361€.Hate to mount the bezel as you recommend.Really a big thank you for your work, your intellectual and moral honesty with a touch of humor is great 😉😘

I just got back into the sport. Used to do CQB and PvP competitions. I have a 30ft long 10ft wide basement i converted into a isolation foam board and cardboard lined indoor range. utilities are enclosed in a separate room. I bought a crosman snr357 co2 it came with the gun and 6 bb and 6 pellets cartridges has iron sights not highlighted but rear is adjustable with eyeglass size flat screw driver. I bought a dan Wesson 25 pack of bb cartridges for it. And a few revolver speed loaders. I also have a Barra Sportsman 900 rifle. that came with a cheap scope. But has adjustable rail sights with 2 green (rail) fiber optics and red (mussle tip) fiber optic. But find if there's less light behind you then in front of you, the fiber optics don't show as well but with light above/ behind you they are clear greenredgreen. The rear sight is elevation and windage(right side only) adjustable. Easy 10 pumper. Max. I find in my range they work well. I paid around $80 USD forcthe pistol and around $60 for the rifle. The cartridges i mentioned were about $40 USD on Amazon at least the USA Amazon format. I forgot to mention as a disclaimer that i own my home it is a brick row house in a city. I have 1 window I mentioned i lined the walls with insulation boards. I have 2 windows. And for safety while i am shooting I have hinges drilled into the wall with mason screws and 1 inch thick ply wood and insulation board 1 window is at the very front (street side) which is the end i shoot from. And the other window goes to my backyard. Which is only 10ftx10ft and on top of my garage. So my safest option is the indoor range.shooting toward my back yard.

Air gun shooting is all of the things Andy alludes too , plus it's also a discipline which once You get into it becomes addictive , I think I've watched every episode of AAR and everyone of them is full of excellent advise , this one is just the same , My advice is to watch a few more (All would be better ) of the AAR videos ,specifically the one's that have the type of gun Your interested in , and try some other channels such as S&C TV they are currently doing episodes aimed specifically at beginners . On a personal note My preference is for spring guns , maybe I'm old fashioned but I enjoy the feedback from the recoil and the added challenge of being able to shoot recoiling guns accurately , when You pick up a PCP later they feel like Your shooting a laser and are a breeze to shoot accurately , but they feel lifeless - just My observation . Thanks Andy . Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Stay Well .

Another informative video Andy, which I could have done with a year or so ago. I would echo your advice about local gunsmiths. Get to know a good one; beware some can be pants; and then use them for support. Once you build that relationship and develop a trust in their unbiased advice, stick with them. I wasted time relying on the local 'box shifter' before I found a dealer in North Notts. that was reliable and welcoming to customers. Funnily enough, it's the same company that lend Andy most of his 'props'. The petrol to fill by diving bottle costs twice the price of the fill; but the welcome and the craic are well worth the effort.

My advice to any new air gunners is to try and get yourself a springer weihrauch, if possible an underleaver. The accuracy is astounding and no need for CO2 or pre charged cylinders. Iv had several air rifles covering all the different types and iv still got and will always keep my weihrauch hw97, don't need anything else but the pellets. There's plenty of those too but ignore all the fancy tipped stuff and get sample packs of a few different brands and different wieghts of pellets. Some rifles are a bit picky on which pellets they like and their accuracy can differ quite a lot so if you can't get anywhere with the pellets your using try others. Wieght of pellet is definitely a big factor in sub 12lb air guns don't go too heavy or you may get issues with the pellet getting stuck in the barrel. My sub 12lb HW97K likes most pellets, loves h&n and for 30yrds I find pellets around 16gr in weight are getting the job done brilliantly.

Andy here is one of my favourite Air Gun TH-camrs, he approaches everything from an informative standpoint and doesn't just focus on the "big boys" of the industry. I got back into airgunning around 3 years ago, though due to covid, it's been over a year since I last shot, due to health issues and the range I shoot at being closed. Andy's reviews over the last year have at least taken the edge off of that and have given me ideas for what I'd like to look at upgrading my kit to eventually.

Yes,but airgunners get a bad rap.
They are an easy target ( excuse the pun).
Even the 12 foot pounds restriction is a mess because there are so many variables, pellet options etc that a rifle shooting close to the limit can go over with another pellet.
So checking with a chronograph with a range of pellets is a must.
If the gun is proved to be capable of this with the right pellet combo and conditions you could be in a pickle.
Actually I would love to know what foot poundage a golf ball can achieve with a strong golfer?
Unfortunately I can see airgunners targeted again in the future and ownership will become more and more difficult.

started with a break barrel meteor at 12 then went straight to 20 and 12 bore but always liked the skill of closer range and accuracy required with for vermin control with an air rifle. Something am considering taking back up as now live near a club. Thanks for the vids, which i only just discovered.

Umarex origin pumps from empty to 3625psi (200bar) with a cheap 40dollar 3 stage Chinese hand pump in 4 minutes or less, and is close to effortless. Love that rifle. Plus over 55fpe in .25cal. Best part, the rifle was less than 260dollars shipped.

I own break barrels and c02 powered rifles. Both are good, but the break barrel rifles require a bit of strength and energy after every shot, and it's a little more powerful than a co2 air gun. Personally, i like the pneumatic piston air rifle.

Great video mate, I was shooting 35ish years ago, and dug out my old ASI sniper last lockdown, then bought a Diana from a colleague. Now I want a PCP, I toyed with getting a Huben ( but my wife would kill me lol ).
Time will tell where and what I end up with 👍🏻

Basically if you are hunting don’t bother with a springer as after your first shot everything will be gone, in my opinion a springer is a cheap way to get started for targets, plinking etc. knowing what your main objective is will help you decide so if it’s more than just plinking don’t waste your money save a little extra and go down the PCP route better for hunting and can be more precise for target work.

i'd be classed as a starter and just wondered what your opinion is on gun safes? is it worth investing in if your gonna build up a collection? and of course for safety but just didn't know if they are 'overkill' for airguns , as haven't seen many people talk about them. cheers

Interesting, but why did you skip multi-pump air rifles? For many casual hobby shooters a multi-pump is the most affordable and practical and you can easily adjust the power depending on the number of pumps. For some folks who just want to plink in their back garden (or indoors) a Daisy Red Ryder or Model 25 is a great and inexpensive way to have fun shooting at targets or tin cans.
BTW: I'm 74 and don't mind pumping up my PCP rifles, a good aerobic workout.
Cheers. I enjoy your humor. 👍

Tick - VG Andy! Excellent as always.
However, one of the best bits of advice I would give to a new/prospective shooter is to go to a GOOD gun club.
There, a newbie can get professional advice, but also meet with shooters who will generally share their knowledge, and most will be only too happy to allow new starters to try their own kit.
Difficult subject matey, but you did it proud!

Hey am new to shooting I started just b4 the first lockdown and I started with a gamo Spring but after being at the range and that really want to start shooting pcp guns if it's possible would you be able to make a video were we get see what happens and that as we fill up the guns and see how to put co2 in to guns the right way without damaging are new guns and about the air pressure on the guns as so when I get round to actually getting a pcp gun ill have a good idea of what am actually doing lol

  • @barrynielsen4044

I too have your problem, I collect guns which I probably don't need but it gives me the option to use various types both CO2 and PCP which hopefully will improve my skill. I wish I'd seen a video like this years ago when I first started shooting, I could have saved myself a lot of cash by not buying the wrong type to start with....As always a great video, cheers Andy and Mrs AAR for helping improve the face of this sport/hobby.
