D5 is full of amazing deer habitat. It's a wonder that it's so notoriously hard to tag out. I don't have single remaining waypoint inside D5 on my onx hunt maps. The hiking is heavenly...if you're not carrying a bow, a climber, emergency kit, trail snacks & extra, EXTRA nicotine patches. (Don't pack water. Pack a container & some water filters, & drink from any number of nearby water sources.)
Just found your channel and subscribed I'm very new to hunting deer in California , I hunted D8 but no luck and granted I don't venture to far from roads due to medical problems. I was wondering if you can do a video on pointers of rifle deer hunting. I have researched what they eat out here but the ones I've seen browse on practically every type of greenery so how do you narrow it down?.

@@St0lenGlasses I really appreciate your channel and efforts I can use all the help I can get . I've hunted whitetails for 25 years in Wisconsin with great success but here I see very few deer and even less with antlers that make it legal to harvest . I have a 17 year old son who likes to hunt sometimes hard to keep him motivated when we don't even see deer and I'm afraid I don't have that many more years in me to hunt the mountains with him . So I'm sure you know the frustrations that I'm dealing with to keep traditions alive .
Tree Rat69 I’m glad you’re getting value out of the channel! Mule deer and Especially black tail are some of the most illusive deer to find. It definitely a challenge but stay tuned in the next few weeks, that tradition is crucial to keeping this culture alive!
I usually hunt D-6 with my father a 75 year old retired veteran. We missed out on our Tags and want to get some D-5 tags so we don’t miss the hunt. Just off curiosity can you give us an idea of a good place to hunt in the D-5 area? We don’t know the zone at all and any pointers would be so helpful.
Anywhere around Kyburz my friend. Just drive the fire roads on either side of hwy 50. If you’re lookin to hike out at all find a clearing or historical burn area that has new growth and get away from the roads. You’ll see plenty of sign and hopefully a legal buck 👍🏼 hope this helps good luck
I got a question sir. When hunting during the season for it, are we allowed to use public trails to get to destinations where we desire to hunt and then to get off the trails? I hunt in south Cali. Only so far and tought we werent allowed but trails do help a lot and then get off any ridge off the trails. Just wondering. It would help a lot if you can tell me for sure.
Angel Ceja great question. If you are on California national forest land or BLM land you are allowed to hike off of the designated trail. Typically you can not drive vehicles off the trail but you can hike out. When you start hiking out into new areas make sure you are staying within your hunt zone and that you are not crossing over private property. You can get maps of public hunting access areas through department of fish and wildlife or bureau of land management offices around you. If you’re more into gps you can use something like the OnX hunt app which tells you what the private property boundaries and hunt zones are. hope this helps 👍🏼
Well there are certain groups destroying the d3 area the deer population has basically disappeared Tahoe NF us25 and us35 are now gone as of October 2022
Jose Nunez you need a d zone tag. It’s going to be an over the counter tag from department of fish and wildlife. It’s going to include zones d3-d5 and you also need a valid California hunting license 👍🏼
