Exactly 5 years ago today is the first time I heard Rotting Christ, and it was this song.
I was a fresh heretic at the time (ex Muslim) when Spotify randomly threw this at me, so you can imagine how the dark, atmospheric intro with that quote made me feel.. Good times

Glad you found them. I discovered them about 2 years ago and was blown away. Now one of my all time favorite bands. Their music is catchy, haunting and the lyrics are mesmerizing. The Heretic took me a while to get into, but now I think it's the best album.

I actually have a Black Metal playlist for gaming. It's more atmospheric and droney BM. Like Depressive BM, Blackgaze, and Ambient. Suits most gaming situations and keeps immersion from breaking.

switchboardrevelry the lyrics are more about the excerpts from the heretics on whom and whose ideas the album focuses. The other lyrics are just fillings, this is what I understand. The album is a soundtrack to the heretics and their ideas. The previous album was a soundtrack to excerpts related to and a soundtrack of rituals. I think these albums are targeted on a purpose. Sakis tried to show-display the excerpts and the heretics. Not take attention away from the excerpts and them. This is a hypothesis, perhaps this is the case. Pyre/fire/liar is where heretics were burned literally or not literally. Again hypothesis.
@@innosanto yes, it seems that there are lot of fillings indeed. But in these fillings there are lyrics that do have a meaning that serve to the consept. For example "Burn the witch in pyre" shows how people with different opinions and beliefs were treated by the others. I believe that that's the meaning of this album. The "Heretics" are people judged by the church for having a different view and shared that. Also in the booklet you can find a drawing of a crusader doing his cross after burning a city. This has the same purpose as these lyrics.

From the legendary Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Nightfall, Necromantia, Varathron, Thou Art Lord and the endless Hellenic black metal pantheon, to the innovators Spectral Lore, Thy Darkened Shade, Acherontas, Hail Spirit Noir and the death metal masters Dead Congregation, Sickening Horror, Nightrage, Embrace of Thorns. Not to mention the classic heavy pioneers Firewind, Battleroar, Wishdoom and Wrathblade. That's just a hint..

@@kickedfromcampaign the vocals and the drums sounds and feels like black metal but the rest feels like heavy (slower guitars and less saturation than blackmetal). imo a lot of metal bands can't be defined by one genre alone and rotting christ is one of them.

Rotting Christ have made such a huge contribution to metal, they really have got better with age in my view. Sure, they've had some low moments over the years, but not many (metal) bands can attest to such longevity and quality of output.
