I specifically DONT let my dog off lead because of people like that - I’ve had so many dogs SPRINT at me and my dog and my pooch gets very protective and defensive when that happens, he’s such a sweetheart but a big dog so when that happens it’s ALWAYS my dogs fault?? It’s insane -.- I just don’t let him off, he has a 10ft lead we don’t pull in so he has freedom to run and fetch with us
If you don’t have total control of your dog off its leash it shouldn’t be off a leash. A lot of annoying people will train a little without a leash and think it’s fine to go without one. The leash protects the dog, the dog owner, and people and pets around the two.
This is terrific. I’d add in a whistle in case technology fails. I also want to say that’s exactly how I had my last dog be great on and off leash (she was a Service Dog) and also how I’m training my current dog, a Service Dog in training. You can imagine how important their training is and positive reinforcement gets such reliable results and builds such a great relationship. She loves to do her job because she loves me and she loves that I recognize her hard work. I feel so lucky to have such a great dog. 🥰
Nala’s inquisitive expression when you take each item out of your pack is adorable. It’s like she’s doing the checklist in her head to make sure you didn’t forget anything.
Thank you for sharing that wee bit about recall! Recall is one of the most important things to teach your dog. There's so many times when you bump into people having their dogs off leash coming running towards you and don't come when called for. I'm a dog owner myslef but I usually take loads of precaution when strangers dogs comes running. It makes me so happy to see how great of a team you and Nala is. I love seeing people working with dogs the way you do. It's so inspiring!
Nala Stomp Chomps: Happy trail treats for happy trail feet. I swear she’d be the perfect face and story for trail treats to train your dog for hiking that won’t attracts too many other animals. Just putting the idea out there so I can buy it 🤣😂.
I made biscuits for my dog for years. I controlled the ingredients and even had bone shaped cookie cutters. If you asked Ginger if she wanted a cookie, she did a Ginger version of the Nala Stomp. So darned cute and she loved her cookies. If you want the recipe, reply here and I’ll dig it out for you … 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
I’m very fortunate in the fact that my dog hates being away from us for too long. He’ll dash after a fox sometimes in our forest hikes, but I don’t chase after him, and I don’t worry. I just stay in place and after a minute, I’ll call his name so he can find me more easily. He comes running back through the forest to me. Aside from that, when he go on hikes and walks on solitary paths, he likes to run up ahead and sniff around, and then turn around to make sure he can see me and waits for me to catch up!
I think I’ve only commented on TH-cam once before this (I’ve been on TH-cam for over 10 years). I just had to express how much joy it brings me to see the love you have for your fur baby. Keep being a wonderful dog dad and a great example to all dog parents ❤
My friend Nicki is training her cockapoo puppy Roxy and they are both doing a great job of it. She is coming up for 11 months old and her recall is amazing. She is such an intelligent little dog and Nicki is so gentle and patient with her. Dogs and all animals are a blessing xxx
Yes!! The treats for every check in will only strengthen that bond and trust! It’s the best tip and I have been using for years! All my dogs come back to me, even my super independent dogs!! ❤🎉
You are awesome, Chris! Excellent, informative video. Love your Nala... ❤ 🐾 ❤ and Positive Reinforcements are a phenomenal way to teach your puppy dog, for sure! ❤ ❤
I had a small dog, 6 kg (12 pounds) that has been a great mountaineer his whole life. It was so great to hike with him. He could handle a 13 miles hike and 4000ft drop. I was so proud of him.
Love your videos! You have given Nala such a great life, and good times! And it’s obvious she has given that back to you! A perfect relationship! You 2 are so great together!!
Idk how my boy learnt it at the first place, if I just sit and call him he'll dash back towards me with full excitement and I love it, I make sure I treat him for coming back to me!
I love that you bring extra water, extra food, medical supplies, and the most important thing is the recall. That makes hike so much more fun and enjoyable for both of you. Great job Nola stomps. ❤🐾🥰🐾🙏
Thanks for these tips! Just got my fur baby and I plan on training him to be the bestest hiking companion. Only doing short Burts right now while training and he finishes growing but super excited for our adventures together.
I love hiking with my dogs. I'm lucky to live near the foothills of the Cascades and have access to a huge privately owned forest so my dogs can run free. They're really good about sticking fairly close and coming when called. I guarantee that hiking with good dogs increases the joy level by ×100.
Chris, you always do so well cause I sure do think about that when you 2 are out and about in nature. Her staying with you and within eyesight. You have done such a good job of teaching her. 👍 Just enjoy, stay safe and happy. 🤗🤗💗🥛stay cool ....😎
She IS a good girl. (Listens better than SOME children) And she doesn't do it for the treats, she knows she's secure with you and she looks out for you also. I think that is great. Smart little girl. I love her so much. 💕
I have taken dogs on hikes and to play in the wild. They like to explore and it is very important to train them to stay at your side when needed and to know when they can venture ahead. The most dangerous part for them was always coming back to the vehicle where we would stop and adjust our attention about a 100 yards from the trailhead and proceed slowly with them at my side so they did not run out into a road. They learned "Stay with me" and taught the new pups when we got one.
This is so cute and i appreciate bringing light to positive reinforcement. One small thing that's helped for hikes with my dog, is a small waterproof tote bag i clip onto my hiking bag. It carries her poop and this way i cant smell it or drop it.
15 years of daily hiking with my Golden "Tucker" in all weather conditions. Mixed with 2 Yellow Labs. One of the best gifts in life! He's passed and yet he's with me! I always carry a spare towel and emerg. blanket to warm the dog up. Nala is a beauty!
i‘d a high quality whistle, a powerbank, a life straw (so that you can safely drink from lakes, rivers and even puddle or pee) and something like a powerful light or a signal fire to get located just i case. i also carry a compass and a tiny inflatable iso-mattress in case i have to sleep outside.
I would also recommend a wildlife bull for both you and Nala to wear. My dog wears one so I can find her, I I wear one so she can find me if we get separated. It also warns deer and other wildlife that we are coming, which is helpful for more remote hikes.
Thanks for all the good tips ❤. Definitely makes the hike more enjoyable when your best friend doesn't just disappear into the wooded terrain 😮!! Nala where are you? Good girl ❤. Treats for you and me!! LOL

So many dog owners let their dogs off leash without training recall. Thank you for showing how important it is
💯❤️✨

Unless you're hiking in places like this where it's completely remote, your dog shouldn't be off leash period.
No
Thank you for sharing, specially the Nala stops part, haha.
Aannnddd sheee stomp she stomp she do the Nala stomp 🐕

Let’s be honest, mainly for Nala 😂
Nala always looks so content. She loves nothing more than her human. 😁
Nala: Stomps
The god of the mountain:
"You shall survive another day"
Him: nala comes back on recall
Nala: steals socks and ran everywhere but back to him

Thanx for the dog hiking info. It's important to know what's best to bring.

You are absolutely amazing dad to Nala I can see the love between you 2😊
I totally agree about the stomps😂. My biggest fear is a bear or something and my puppy trying to go after it.
Then don't miss the opportunity to participate and chase a bear together 😝
