  • The core Paradise Lost songwriters Nick Holmes and Greg Mackintosh travel back 20 years to remember their critically acclaimed One Second album. They discuss the start of their great experimentation era in great detail. The video is tinged with their trademark sarcastic humour.
Ahead of next year's 30th anniversary, Paradise Lost, the genre-defining British doom metal band are set to release the 20th anniversary edition of their 1997 album ‘One Second' through Music For Nations on 14th July.
Having continually proved themselves to be at the forefront of the UK rock and metal scene, ‘One Second' proved to be a turning point for the band, where they left behind their harder edge and began experimenting with electronics and keyboards taking on a more gothic direction.
20 years on from its release - singles, ‘Say Just Words' and title track ‘One Second' are still performed live today.
    Vocalist Nick Holmes comments:
"The album really was a vast departure from Draconian Times and for better or worse the beginning of a very experimental stage for the band. Either way ‘One Second' will always remain a vital cog in the band's close to 30 year history. We are happy to be working with Music For Nations again on this release."

The re-issue of ‘One Second' is fully supported by the band and their management with their input on packaging and audio, along with liner notes from renowned Kerrang journalist Nick Ruskell.
Re-mastered by the band's current producer, Jaime Gomez, and with a CD version featuring a live concert from the time, which was only previously available on DVD, this is a must for any Paradise Lost fan, or someone delving deeper back into the band's catalogue.

Thanks for the interview ! The echo was annoying but this was still a good listen. 30 years of a great musical career is worth to share around.

I wonder if they are really sincere stating all of this crap, "we were tired of doing the same, we aimed for a different direction, bla, bla.." That different direction included betraying their roots, giving the back to their old fans who supported them from the start and aiming to sound like Oasis? Why cannot they be honest and tell the truth: "yes, we sold out, yes, we wanted to explore a more profitable market". What´s wrong saying the truth? Like most of the bodybuilders from the 90´s I knew, who when they were active never declared using ´roids, but once out of competition and many of them about to die, finally came clear and said "yes, we used and abused this and that too, and we wish we would have never done it". Does it take dying for people to be honest? It really seems so.

You think? Do they (PL) give away their LP´s out of love? or do they charge a money fee for them? am I not suppoused to criticize what I pay for? I´m a fan, but not a blind, deaf mute FANATIC and cheer "yeah! you rock! you are the best!" for whatever crap the bands I like they throw at us. Besides, time has proved they´re hypocrites moved by convenience since they now have "returned" to their roots after more than a decade of pissing on them. Should go and learn from Cianide or Dismember, bands never compromised their sound nor sold to the media.

PL indeed got tired if writing the same linear format songs and decided to try something new. There were no guarantees that their new material would sell as well as for example their Draconian Times album and it was a risky direction to take rather than a safe market to explore. Neither the subsequent One Second or Host albums came close to Draconian Times in terms of their album sale numbers, so it was not selling out. It was to satisfy their own creative instincts and follow their musical quest of evolution.
