  • PLEASE NOTE: This is not a tech channel, but simply a show-and-tell. It is not designed to give advice and support on vacuum tube amplifiers but to show what I get up to each week in the workshop.
I deliberately keep tech talk to a minimum, or at least to a point where it’s understandable to the casual viewer. There are other channels more suited to that level of detail.
I do not do reviews, either paid or unpaid. My opinions are entirely my own and do not represent those of others.
All comments are welcome but those deemed unhelpful, rude, inappropriate, or unsavoury will be reviewed and possibly censored.

re: increased cosrt of components (since you asked) I think that if the increase is significant (and I'd say a 100% increase IS significant) that should be passed on to the customer. No question.
Also, regrading 5e3 speakers, I built a 5e3 and have a Celestion blue but to be honest can't understand the positivity.. I swappewd mine out for a WGS G12Q which is about a third of the price and IMHO sounds much better - each to their own eh?

Interesting question on passing on costs. In general I'd say yes but, as you know, it's a comptitive market and you need to be fairly savvy to your market. You're not competing with Fender and you're not competing with cheap Chinese imports - at least with your ore customer base.
You then have to look at the contributing factor of the price rise to the overall materials - nuts that cost pennies doubling in price has marginal impact on your cost-to-build. A transformeer doubling in price is massive.
    Tricky balancing act!

Well, didn't expect a schematic but at least a sound sample, giess the amp is that great IYHO.

That's a crazy increase, doubling in price out of the blue. I would try and source similar quality for less, and if that's not an option perhaps split the increase onto the price of the amp. 50/50 or 60/40 or similar mate.

Thanks Chris for latest update, as ever very enlightening. It must be difficult not to pass on the increased costs but at the end of the day you have a business to run. Good luck for the weekend.

We were in the London area from the middle of May until the end of the month and were worried about getting rained on the whole time. It turned out lovely except for one day, so not bad weather overall. You are up by Birmingham if I am not mistaken, so I guess the weather is a bit wetter in the north! Hope the nice weather sticks for a while!

Those old Celestions sound incredible, the new ones have big shoes to fill!.
I had a set in a Mk1 Selmer Zodiac, wish I still had it!.

I think you have to pass that price on... If it remains consistently higher. But then would you do the opposite if the price of those things fell back down again? Thats rhe question !

That’s a steep increase in hardware costs. Ultimately you have to pass costs on to customers. Beautiful amps like yours aren’t really bought on price….

Have you ever used the Mullard CV4004 (New) in any of your builds or repairs? If you have, I was just wondering what you think about them and if you like them or not.
