    Hi Boys... having eaten my fair share of MRE's as a corpsman with my Marines, I can tell you that if you have been sitting in a dirt hole for 12 hours and somebody tosses you the spaghetti and meatball MRE bag, you don't complain about the "tin" flavor of the meatballs or the chewyness of the bread. Main thing to remember, and its taught from day 1: In the field? "Its fuel not food, men" as if you had to be reminded. In the field its also uncommon to actually have time to use the heater for the entree.
    Also I've trained with the Brits and they do have their own MREs. I'm not havin a go, but they legitimately were half filled with multiple kinds of tea.

    We didn't get a choice, we just got handed the MRE. But it was easy to trade around. Some guys liked one thing and hated another...the opposite for other guys, etc. You ended up with something decent. Mind you, this was back in the 80's. But still, the whole point was to deliver a shit ton of calories in a sturdy and durable package.

    • @danielrupp7578
      @danielrupp7578 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, 2,000 calories in a single meal. The bitch of it being you'd be hungry again in a couple of hours. Also didn't have much of a choice of what was offered although they began vegetarian varieties that had better options with the main course than the others. Served 10-15 years later than you apparently. As stated previously thank you for your service.

    I was in the marines from 07-2013 . In Afghan I remember trading our MRE ‘s sometimes with the British army just so we all got different stuff lol . British MRE’s are pretty good actually .also put it in the green bag with the white thing inside it . That’s the heater . At water and lean it on a “rock or something” and it activates the heating element . Not only is that how you do it , it literally says rock or something on the directions .

  • @kinjiru731
    @kinjiru731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Often guys will stuff two things in the heater. There's usually enough room for the main plus one more item in there, even if it's a tight fit. So you could have warmed up the bread in it. Yes, each nation has its own MRE's though some source a fair share of items from other nations. I think Canada gets some of their items from the US. China tends to have rice, noodles, seafood etc and Spain tends to have certain seafood items, etc. French MRE's have a good reputation and Russian MRE's are quite unique.

    With MREs, the trick I did to make sure I never got a truly bad one was to ask for the vegetarian. Not because the main meal of those are good, but because to make up to the calorie count, they tend to have peanut butter and good sides. Main dish was usually sub-par, but the candy bars and other sides were great for trading with others.

    • @misinformedmarti
      @misinformedmarti 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for the quality, it is a matter of happy by perspective. After not eating anything normal for awhile, they start seeming better. Though, let me be very clear, every commander knows to make an effort to provide a 'hot meal.' MREs are only really given when there is no choice. I actually think they are more expensive than having a hot meal delivered, and you can't deny the morale difference.

    Meatball was my favorite MRE. Used to take the main bag it came in, take everything out, then fold it into a bowl then dump the meatballs, cheese and bread into the bowl and mix it up and eat it all together (you don't have time typically to sit down and eat each individual deal at a time). Didn't come with a cookie or anything at all though then

    MRE's have came a long way from when I was in the service. I went in the service in 1982. During boot camp, we had Viet Nam Era C Rations. 8 weeks later we got the very first MRE's. There were some that we're really good like Ham loaf, Chicken loaf, spaghetti, beans and franks, and we had some pure shit like dehydrated beef or pork patties, and chicken ala cat puke. The accessories were pound cake, chocolate nut bar, peanut butter, crackers, plain old cheese spread. Coffee, gum. Toilet paper. But we didn't have a way to heat ours. If you wanted yours hot you had to put the foil pack in your clothes against your skin. Another fun fact, I was part of the Air Force group who have recommendations to the manufacturers for improvement. We were responsible for tge mini bottle of tabasco sauce in the accessory pack.

    As I’m told the food has a component that makes you constipated. The chewing gum has a laxative power on it. My brother used to make friends with the HEMMET drivers in Iraq ( the heavy equipment truck drivers). Drop the main course down the exhaust stack and wait 15 minutes. Tickle the throttle and blow the hot MRE right out the stack. I think most MRE’s have about 2500+ calories.

    • @kokomo9764
      @kokomo9764 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The food is intentionally designed to produce little waste In the body. Anyone who has had to crawl out of a fox hole to take a shit appreciates this little detail. You cannot take a shit or piss behind the line so you are exposed when you crawl forward. The less often you have to do that the better.
      The MREs are a world apart from the Vietnam era C-rats. An MRE would have been a dream. The only advantage in those days was that the C-rat came with 3 cigarettes.

    • @thisbrokenmachine
      @thisbrokenmachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the laxative in the gum is sorbitol some people are more sensitive to it then others i think it is a myth that it is meant to un-constipate the soldiers though bc it is a regular sweetener in all sugar free gum, mouthwashes, and sugar free gummy candy....if you look on ingredients it is either identified as sugar alcohol or sorbitol. The development of sorbitol was as a laxative but they found out it was super sweet so they then advertised it as a sugar replacement.

    They're packed with calories, during high stress (like combat) you lose your appetite. The MRE is designed to replace your entire daily caloric intake and then some. That was a soldier can eat part of one and still have energy for the day. They're not meant to be eaten longer than 30 days in a row, but things happen with supply. One of my buddies was in the Marines the first few days of the current war and they had nothing but MRE's for 40 days, but they had a local who was a miracle worker for scrouging, he would bring them chickens and the occasional goat. A lot of the current MRE contents are commercially manufactured and sold in stores, but in more marketable packaging. The tuna in plastic pouches and stews in plastic packaging came from MRE development. They make the meals taste as good as they can as a morale booster. In the field, their sergeants get first pick and then the rest trade for what they want and the leftovers get put in a duffel bag for later. They eat what they want first. That's usually called "ratfucked" because the "rats" took the good stuff first.

    There are commercial MREs available. You should try those and compare them to the military ones.

    Those were definitely a lesser quality in the 80's and 90's when I was growing up.... My dad was a Supply Sergeant who brought home the extra when allowed because my parents were poor

    The cheese in MREs used make you constipated. It was good to be constipated in cold weather, nothing worse than pinching a loaf outside in cold weather. My favorite MRE was the dehydrated pork patty. That was 30 years ago so I'm not sure if they even still make that MRE or not.

    Basically, every MRE except the Omlet is decent. The Omlet is inedible and even worse they gave you Red Hots instead of Peanuts or Skittles so you didn't even get full of off one. Most leaders acted as though the Omlet was a placeholder bag.

    Two English friends have two youtube channels, Korean Gentleman channel and companion channel Jolly. They did a whole series on MREs, including American, British, Korean, French and Russian (which was scary). They had British soldiers try the Korean MRE and Korean soldiers try the British and it was very funny.
