  • Clipped from the movie Amadeus
A sweetheart or a pretty little wife
    Is Papageno's wish.
    A willing, billing, lovey dovey
    Would be
    My most tasty little dish.
Be my most tasty little dish!
Be my most tasty little dish!
Then that would be eating and drinking
I'd live like a Prince without thinking.
The wisdom of old would be mine -
A woman's much better than wine
Copyright by Mozart if anyone. Certainly not some hollywood clowns.

True Fact: In the original run of "The Magic Flute", Mozart would mess with Schikenader by playing notes on the celestina (the little keyboard he's playing there, to mimic the sound of bells) during times Papageno wasn't supposed to be ringing the bells. Onstage, Schikenader would become frustrated at the "misbehaving glockenspiel" and yell _"Shut up!"_ right in the middle of the performance.

In this scene, Mozart's manner of conducting is a lot less refined than compared to, say, the Abduction from the Seraglio (understandably, given how exhausted he is). Watching how Mozart conducts is a great recurring motif throughout the movie to show the state of his character.

There are two mistakes at least in this scene:
00:00 This particulare scenography was invented by Schinkel for a performance in 1815, Mozart couldn't see it, he was already dead by then.
00:00 This scenography was used to represent the first aria of the queen of night where she stands on the moon while talking to Tamino; but here she is singing the second one, where she is supposted to have a knife in her and and to be talking to Pamina; so this scenography is wrong again but for a different reason...

All of the characters in the movie speak in English, but should be speaking in German. So, they translated all German parts, even the operas, to English for continuity. The scenes in Italian are actually in Italian. It’s a nice little touch.

    • @pianobanter
      @pianobanter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Originally in German yes, but in the film it's the fourth and final sequence of a Mozart opera.... so as a contrast to Figaro, Don Giovanni and the Seraglio already shown at length, they went for the catchy, funny songs of Flute in the English lyrics for the cinema audiences. It's immediate and perks the viewer up before the foreboding and intense final scene. Incidentally, I saw "The Magic Flute" last year here in the UK, and that was in English too albeit with alternative lyrics.

Andy S No, not percentage-wise, but there still were millions of uncivilized, unchristianizied, UN-contacted tribes living in Australia, Africa, the Amazon River Basin, and Southern America.

Does anyone knows why the lyrics are in english when this opera was actualy written in german ?

Because everyone spoke English in the movie when in reality they would have spoken German. (Italian was kept italian...)

@@hsmoker1 Just like in the Sound of Music, which also takes place in Austria; in reality Maria, the Von Trapps and everyone else would have spoken German also.

It’s supposed to be in German but they did the whole movie in English because most of the audience would speak English

Because Americans decided to make the movie and not germans.

in the film it's the fourth and final sequence of a Mozart opera.... so as a contrast to Figaro, Don Giovanni and the Seraglio already shown at length, they went for the catchy, funny songs of Flute in the English lyrics for the cinema audiences. It's immediate and perks the viewer up before the foreboding and intense final scene. Most operas now have the option of English translations as an alternative, just to make it more accessible i guess.
