I just installed three of those exact fiberglass columns on my house. I didn’t have a bottle jack so I used a car jack; I used a portaband to cut the columns and a piping wrap around to make a circular mark on the column as a reference mark; I footed my columns on pvc sheets. It went very smoothly.
We just installed 3 of these on our porch . Ow our question is , can you attach wood porch railing to the columns ? What type of screws do we need ? Show me how !
I’m curious as to why you didn’t flash the top cap? I did this same project about 4 years ago using the same columns and was advised to flash the top cap. I also caulked around the bottom base but your reasoning to not caulk it leaves me questioning my process. I always learn something new. Thanks.
Ron, I just installed 2 of these on my grandparents' house that my brother owns and is updating....I flashed the top to cover the hole and the fact that I used a piece of 1/8" stainless steel makes me feel better if nothing else but I'm thinking that it may help structurally in some small way 🤔
If you first make sure that ceiling is 100% level, then yes. If not level, need to cut it longer. Also, seen some guy when using treated wood to cut it about 1/4 longer for future wood shrinkage.
Wow. This is really great instruction for someone who’s already very seasoned with carpentry but it’s not even the slightest help to a person who’s wanting to actually learn how to install the support columns themselves which is a fair description of myself. No help to me. Probably great for someone else who almost knows what they’re doing. I need support columns install for dummies
Ok BOB! What about when you have to replace the decking in the future. You should do all structural work FIRST! Then the decking. Then the Decorative work last. Structural beams should NEVER be installed on top of the decking. Decking does not last forever. And when it gets replaced you should not have to jack up the STRUCTURE just to repair or replace your decking!!!
This is a tapered column and it's widest part is the bottom, which they had to cut off to make it the correct length. That made a narrower part of the column fit into the base. The top of the column has molded detail that cannot be cut. This is also why it's important to order the post closest to proper length to minimize this effect or just get a non-tapered column.
pretty unecessary.. the self sealing membrane doesent go all the way out.. should something happen to the boards you have to take away the column anyway
Colin Bollinger I’ve never tried it that way. I’d rather have the lumber slip and fall, than a heavy jack. Then you have the problem of needing a ladder to reach the handle for the jack.
rolf sinkgraven slim chance if it getting in contact with moisture. Same concept with a roof, the plywood is left unpainted but the singles will prevent the plywood coming in contact with water. The column was caulked all the way around and its under the roof which had mitigation for water so the only water that could get on it would be from rain and wind but the caulk is enough

How much were the columns?
What brand column are these?
Columns always make the house look great
One of the few channels I'll watch the ad's for.
"ad's" Hahaha
Will you be uploading videos on how to frame and start the porch from very beginning?
Good morning just curiously. We need two replace two corners ones. What processes we need to make. On what website can I post the pictures too show?
Where can I find the video that shows how to support the roof first?
I expected you to put some concrete inside the pillar. When are we supposed to do that?
Do the column and the base come together ?

Where do you buy these column
How was the top finished? It looked to be proud of the facing boards.
So, what's to stop the roof lifting off in the wind? caulk? There's no mechanical connection!
Austin is going at it.
I am ready
amazing work.
The colum should be anchored first before screwing the base, otherwise wind, tornado, hurricane etc. Will blow that column out.
the weight of the porch came back down on it, that thing aint going no where..but i agree a few bolts or screws wont hurt
Love you guys!…

Your's will probably last a lot longer given the extra steps you put in.

Is it made of pop???
I am curious, if you have a “synthetic” deck board would you still need to put in a membrane at the base or could that cause issues down the road?
no
Am I able to use the old column as the height measurement if I'm using the same style with the new column? (I assume yes)

Season? Episode?
Question what do you use to fill the screw heads?
RIP Austin :(
RAUH - STRABEN One of the apprentices that is helping Tom in this video. He died during the filming of last season randomly.
RIP
Apparently he had a long standing illness.
RAUH - STRABEN only 18 yrs I believe
Very sad :/ @@nicklk
It didn’t really discuss how to connect to a concrete porch in hurricane country.
This was installed for looks only, as it will not pass a wind load inspection or real life scenario.
I need help
Tommy has alot of trust in Nathan
That's the biggest Gap I ever saw caulked

A lot of times this Old House just likes to show off they do have apprentices on their show who they supposedly actually teach things to
Kevin complaining the posts are heavy like he ever lifts a finger.🤣
Where's the link? I want see how pricey those buggers are.
Menards has them

Why is there so much space between the column and the base

Those stringers look weak??

1:14 his socks are so dark it looks like its just a pair of boots.
No way it does!
I think I'd buy a column from a company who can get their bases to actually fit. Look how off-center it was at 4:08. Not a good look.
I was taught it is safer to put the jack at the top of the post. Is this true?
Colin Bollinger

no
No paint behind the top of the column why not.

@@GDanielCho i am a painter and always discover rot on those places
What if theres a pitch on the deck
You burn it, collect insurance and try again.
There should be a pitch on the deck.
There's no way you can just leave those columns with some kind of bracket
4:20 Coronavirus be like.....
This Old Episode
Did not like how you had to use so much caulk around the column and base.
I just use my dead mother in law's bones.
👎
Wow they can’t not even do nothing right
Much like your grammar!
Joe Kinchicken did someone say die I want to die

You do realize that Leticia is most likely a racist white guy trolling, don’t you?
