Two bits of trivia: 1. "Archie Leach" was Cary Grant's real name (Cary Grant was his stage name). 2. The girl that played Portia was John Cleese's real life daughter, Cynthia
Their performances are all outstanding, but Kevin Kline's acting in front of the camera is out of this world. He more than deserves his Oscar. 👏 But why do so many people presenting TH-cam movie reactions obviously have a problem with his role as Otto? Almost everyone is disgusted and shocked. If (!) people laugh about/because of Otto, then later. Or not at all. But it's Kevin Kline's brilliance in playing Otto as this unsympathetic character so perfectly that makes Kline's performance so special. 🤩
kevin kline won an oscar for his performance. John Cleese and Michael Palin were members of Monty Python's Flying Circus There was a sequel of sorts called Fierce Creatures Portia was played by John Cleese's real life daughter Cynthia Cleese
I really love this movie and the Academy liked it so much that Kevin Kline walked away with an Oscar for his portrayal as the epitome of the "ugly American."
I *highly* recommend Ruthless People. It is an amazing comedy, sadly forgotten. My personal theory as to why Otto can't drive is that he actually *can* drive, but he's 1) American, and 2) irredeemably stupid, so he hasn't realized that in England they drive on the other side of the road. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his performance as Otto, by the way.
The scene where Ken can't say 'The Cathcart Towers Hotel' is in my personal pantheon of the funniest things I've ever seen. My ex wife and I watched it when the movie was on general release; we were down in Devon for her friend's wedding and we decided to go and see it on a whim. When that scene came on I was laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath, for a minute there I was quite worried!! It's very tightly plotted, just like John Cleese's TV series _Fawlty Towers,_ and IMHO that's what makes it a top-tier movie.
That scene was also the entire reason the movie exists. Cleese and Palin had the idea for the scene, and came up with the rest of the script in order to put it in. It's also the only scene they share together.
"Unrealistic amount of air" had never previously factored into my appreciation of the scene. PS "Otto can't drive for..." Mainly, he can't drive on the appropriate (left) side of the road.
At the end i heard mention of Ruthless People being one to come, another of my favourite comedies, i look forward to it. It was mentioned that it stars Danny Devito and Bette Midler, it also stars Judge Reinhold from Beverly Hills Cop.
Kevin steals every scene as Otto. Just the faces he makes are wonderful. Moments where you can see Otto trying to figure something out are my faves, up there with his 'Italian'. But don't call him stupid!!! 🤣🤣🤣 For more of the fantastic Kevin Kline - Dave (with Sigourney Weaver), In & Out (with Joan Cusack), and Road to El Dorado (animated with songs by Sir Elton John) Not sure how you feel about rom-coms, but he's in a cute one with Meg Ryan - French Kiss
I would also add a great TV production of The Pirates of Penzance he did along with Linda Rondstadt and Angela Lansbury. It's an incredibly over-the-top performance by Kline as the Pirate King. th-cam.com/video/J_6j9dI2pHE/w-d-xo.html
I enjoyed "Fierce Creatures", but I would not classify it as a "companion movie". It's 9 years later and is a totally different story. It's just a new movie with much the same cast.
One of my favorite comedies. You ought to check out a movie called "Soapdish" (1991). It has a great all star cast. It has Kevin Kline, Sally Field, Elizabeth Shue, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr, Carrie Fisher, Cathy Moriarty, and Terri Hatcher. I always put a Fish called Wanda and Soapdish in the same kind of quick paced comedies.
Nice reaction - I just finished watching Ken offing that lady's pooches in this movie, and then I click to your home page and the video there's titled "DOG LOVER REACTS!" - almost like John Wick's the sequel to Fish Called Wanda lol
