That is a good question. If the seam is already serged, you may have some trouble with the seam getting caught on the multiple needles. The beauty of this machine is that it cuts off the excess and closes the seam in 1 function. The edges of the fabric are slightly turned under and therefore do not require to be "finished".
@@AIBIChicago thank you for the reply. I have a pair of sweatpants, long johns, that have a 3-needle top and bottom coverstitch, which also secures a folded serged inseam. The secured and folded seam provides a level of structure and stability that otherwise wouldn't be there if the knife automatically trimmed the excess fabric. I was curious as to how they did it. @Christopher Chang Interesting. This machine creates a very strong seam. It is used regularly for yoga pants, and other hyper stretch garments. The machine used for your sweatpants was likely a coverstitch like in our video "Industrial Sewing Machines 101: Kansai Special 2 Needle Coverstitch". That machine can be configured to use 3 needles.
