saw Ranpo in the thumbnail and started praying you would bring up the eyes always being closed troupe!! its one of my favorites, and its so under appreciated
My favorite is when a character is doing something but with closed eyes and smile (usually daily stuff, especially cooking). It feels like they put their heart into it and it's really adorable.
Now I want to see a character do this, causing them to mess everything up, like cracking an egg and pouring it onto the table, right next to the frying pan, because their eyes are closed.
Funny enough the very show you used as a fingerless hands example, Powerpuff Girls, has an episode where the girls swap bodies with other characters, Buttercup switching with the Professor, and during this time she tries to pick up the phone as she normally does and continuously drops the phone, as she's 'grabbing' at it open palmed, having never used fingers before. After the third or so time dropping the phone she angrily exclaims "Professor your hands aren't working!!!" So there you go, an excellent example of the self aware character you're looking for, sans the lore bit.
I remember craig of the creek was on the tv once while I was exercising, one of the main characters has no whites in his eyes, they just color it in with his skin color. The "lights out" trope happened, and all of the characters eyes glowed in the dark except his, and when they called him out on it, he just responds something like "well yeah I have no whites in my eyes" its stuck with me ever since
Idk if this counts, but my personal favorite trope is soft/quiet dad character with bushy eyebrows that act/cover as their eyes (ex. Flint’s dad from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)
The cheated angle thing is so noticeable in every anime that has an elf in it (Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, etc). In a front perspective, their ears point to the side; in a side perspective, their ears point to the back of their heads.
I also like the no fingers hands! Similarly in OK KO they used circles for their hands whenever the characters weren't doing much or if they were far away! I liked it so much that I even used it in a comic series I made when I was twelve! The only character that didn't have it was a talking cat.
8:49 its not exactly sausage hands but in Hilda the elves acknowledge their stick arms. "Its out of my hands!! *looks at stick arms* AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE HANDS!!!" Its one of my favourite jokes in the show
8:50 in the Powerpuff Girls there’s an episode where everybody switches bodies and buttercup is in the professors body and tries to answer a phone, but she doesn’t move her fingers because she’s not used to having them so she’s not able to pick up the phone. I’m pretty sure the characters mentioned that they don’t have fingers as being creepy also
There's a really interesting version of the final trout in Homestuck, Jake gets his glasses slapped off and the I dots fall away as if the pupil was a part of the glasses and not the face
If you're looking for a show that acknowledges the hand thing, Hilda does it well. In the show, there's a very hierarchal civilization of just, little guys, who are simplified even in closeups to the point where their limbs are just lines. One of the earliest plotlines involves the titular Hilda trying to solve a problem by finding one of those guys, one with enough authority to help her. Problem is, there are a LOT of layers to the social hierarchy, so she winds up visiting, like, three different people, all of whom possess similar lines to create a VERY fun running gag. "So you can't help us." "I'm sorry, but it's out of my hands. And I don't even HAVE hands!" I'd recommend the show, it's on Netflix. It's got very cozy urban fantasy vibes, the comedy is on point, and it's just a very good, fun show in general.
"bird aren't built for walking, otherwise we wouldn't have sticks for legs!" "I walk, and I've got sticks for legs" "that's a fair point, let's go." or something like that, I don't remember the full quote lol
The perpetually closed eyes made me think of Lucoa from Dragon Maid, tho she does open them more often than the trope suggests. Also I love that she has that, which is a favorite trope, in addition to ridiculous boobage which is a least favorite trope of yours
As someone who goes through a lot of effort trying to make my character designs look good and recognisable from every angle, I do really admire the balls it takes to just have the character look the same from every angle, physics be damned.
9:40 they did this trope perfectly in an episode of Eddsworld, where everyone’s eyes were glowing except Tom's, bc Tom's eyes are completely black, and it's canonically weird he's like that. Seriously, Edd even said "where's Tom?" Bc he couldn't see his eyes
I know right. Brilliant looks, but the moment he faces you- whatcha' hair doin' there, Anthony? But would you consider it to look like an upward quiff? Something like Slayer from Guilty Gear. This isn't just me wanting to mention Guilty Gear Strive for no reason- what are you talking about?
I have an OC with shut eyes and everyone making comments, main hero often be like "I know that you eyes are shut but wtf I feel your gaze?!" He was mistaken us blind couple times by some dumb characters and he uses it in school to sleep
Kind of similar to the eyes in the dark trope, i really like when shadows have eyes and mouths even though realistically they should also be covered in shadow. That’s not super funny but i like how it looks visually. Murder drones does the hair thing and i think it’s pretty funny, like why do these robots not only have hair but also corsets, thigh highs, and socks w/ garters
I vibe with the big anger or malicious aura that surrounds the characters. It's the kind of saying that speaks to me of either, "Don't mess with me if you know what's good for you," or worse, "Don't make me do something what we'll both regret" without it being said just shown Unless you're Alucard or Raven, that aura can is now completely visible where everyone can see and now should be aware of.
the always-closed eyes are called itome charas (糸目キャラ: literally meaning thread/string-eyed characters, but it means slit-eyed characters) they're very, good.
12:23 a bit of a sub part of this, I love seeing Robot hair having a function! Like pig-tails are jets and long covering their back hair is actually extra storage
11:24 as soon as you mentioned that i instantly thought of metaton from undertale lmao I mean, he kinda needs the hair to remain "handsome" for the other monsters in the underground (in his ex-form ofc)
I was not prepared for the Alberta jumpscare, but I will say you left out the daily spring thunderstorms which magically appear on an otherwise clear day only to disappear just as quickly
Since no one adds it (with my example), I think number 3 is funnier when one character has no eyes, or are totally black eyes with no white. My perfect example? Tom from Eddsworld. In the "Ruined" episode. Everyone just fell from a considerable large height. It's all dark, you can only see their white. Then one of them looks around and realizes one of them is "missing". Then he just turns on a torch, and his eyeless friend was just glaring at him all along. It just makes Edd go "oh. Right." I just think it's hilarious when it happens.
I love love love the eye glasses trope, I use it in my art all the time, including when I draw myself even if I very rarely actually wear my glasses in real life because I got the wrong prescription.
I remember an episode of Pokemon where the girl Brock simps for actually likes him back and at the end of the episode you see her go to her house where she had a Cyndaquil, Snorlax, Swinub, Skitty and an Abra and she says something like “looking into your beautiful eyes reminds me of someone else I met today” 😂
One fun one to do for me is having one character run on toon physics and no one else does At some point you could have their friends get used to it and use it to their advantage. Giant gap? Well Jimmy won't fall is he doesn't look down, he could just carry us over. Falling objects? Carl just flattens, he can take the hit for us. Someone stole something from you? Rebecca can lift a building if mad enough, let her deal with them
I love glasses as eyes - it's one of my favourite tropes (though I love characters with glasses in general - that's my personal representation, and I wouldn't want to miss it!) And for the records: Make-Up behind glasses is not needed, but still acknowledged and appreciated ^^
it's implied in the body swap episode the PPG have a certain way of holding things since when Buttercup was in the Professor's body she can't hold the phone since she's not used to having fingers
There was an anime i watched called Seikirei, where the land lady's anger is represented by a hannya mask. Its sinilar to the looming anger thing you described, but I love what a characters anger is represented by the way they show their anger. The land lady is smiling when the mask comes up, but the other characters KNOW shes angry because of the looming mask 😂
honestly one of my favorite animation trope which ive only ever seen in anime is what tv tropes calls the "demon head" but the description does not really fit so il call it the "aura of wrath", basically its when an ominous aura that contains a demon or other feared creature appears behind a character when they are pissed in order to embody that anger, bonus point if the character itself is just silently smiling with their eyes closed and the other characters can see the aura behind them, my favorite exemple of this is Miya Asama from the anime Sekirei
8:53 there's this one really famous national cartoon in my country where basically all characters don't have fingers or Toes, except one character, and they are constantly bullied for It😭
The "Eyes Always Closed" trope is much older in western animation than in anime, and used to be pretty prevalent. Wimpy and Bluto from Popeye both had their eyes usually closed, as did Jughead from Archie comics, the Max Fleischer Superman, and the Golden Age Captain Marvel (aka Shazam,) just to name a few. More modern depictions of those characters have mostly moved away from it, but in old cartoons and especially comic strips the trope used to be pretty common.
I LOVE the eyes always closed trope and for it to work for my DnD character, i basically got the excuse that since he's an artificially created human there are flaws to his design, he is really physically unhealthy and the muscles he needs to open his eyes are weak. basically he CAN open his eyes but it gets pretty exhausting. plus, his power is sound so he uses sound waves to see (also explains why he's really chatty), and he's actually blind for things that he cannot see with sound. (?? idk how to exlain that one) there was this one funny time where like the lights in a lair went off and he was like "really?"
also because he uses sound to see, he really doesn't fight and prefers to stay on the sidelines (he's a healer) and would be in a big disadvantage if the opponent is stealthy/does not make a sound (like an assassin or a cat [of which strangely, his partner is both])
14:55 BEN 10 MENTIONED I actually said to myself, yo grandpa max has this character trait in ov, but she won’t mention him… very glad you did I love Ben 10
Not sure if it was said yet, but with the "robot hair" trope, where you showed a Gundam, called Gundam Nadleeh (pronounced as Nad-ley) as one of the examples, it's moreso just some Gundam tech mumbo jumbo than just to give hair to a robot. The "hair" is basically meant to be cables that hold detachable armor to hide the Gundam Nadleeh's true form, since it has a system that the faction using this robot wanted to keep secret. But in the story it got revealed earlier than planned. Not saying it ain't cool, just putting some insight as someone who had watched Gundam 00 way too many times.
The fingerless hands trope makes me think of that scene from Dragon maid where Ilulu had balls for hands but they were just a microscopic collection of tiny hands. Now that thought is stuck with me and I always think about it everytime I see a character handle objects just fine even though they have no fingers 🤣
If your setting has supernatural or magical elements you could still use the trope! Magical, amplified darkness could help you there! The Darkness spell in D&D for example can't be dispelled by non magical light or magical light that is weaker than the Darkness spell. So If you add something like that into your setting, then you can still use the trope and have bioluminescence at the same time! : D
Theres one e similar to the always closed eyes trope I like, its the kne which is the one where their eyes are always covered by their eyebrows like the dad from cloudy with a chance of meatballs

Like, my primary sona's hair, bang, thing (furry artist), stays in the same spot, regardless of where he moves his head And my secondary sona's hair, just flips when he turns his head Edit: For number 3, Craig of the Creek actually made a joke about this The three main characters, Craig, JP, and Kelsey were in, I think a dark side room in the stump. And Craig and Kelsey's eyes were shown, but not JP's. 'Cause he doesn't have eye whites
Loll, i do the glasses trope for my own persona. I've gotten so used to her glasses that one time when i had to draw her without them, she looked lowkey scary it made me laugh 🤣🤣
You know, I'm a simple man. I see my baby Ranpo, I click on the video 😭 (please don't ask me about the plot of bsd, I've watched the anime and I have no fucking clue what is happening)
You mention metal hair My brain: Mettaton! His metal hair and metal hair gel! Mentions Gaster later My brain: Eee! Channel I just found today and already watched like 10 or so videos in a few hours like Undertale! New channel cool. Monkey brain happy. Lap around my room and little, fast claps.
I mean, technically with the robot one, if people were thinking about it they could argue that it's for storing RAM or some other robotic thing that helps the android function, but nah. stylistic.
I think that various symbols appearing above the head to showcase emotions should be real bc sometimes i just look at people and wish they would see that windows loading circle above my head bc i need time to process what they said to me
At least you find the Princess Celestia/Duchess Celestia comparison amusing. I'm sorry if it ever became annoying. You were right, Princess Celestia is almost never allowed to have her face completely covered, but that was also a thing MLP Gen 4 did in general with a lot of characters. Their manes would be completely flipped on the side facing the camera, and a far view was rarely seen. 🎶 It's an easy cheat, the animation's all complete 🎶 It wasn’t just done for their shillouette, though. That's also done to show the emotions and expressions of the characters so they don't seem blank when they're most needed.
the fact that here in Brazil we have a character called "Cascão" with fingerless feet with the lore that he aways wears socks while the other characters just...Dont have?
I watched a show where the main character, almost. every. single. episode said "OPEN YOUR EYES ALREADY!" And when that character did, he managed to tell you your entire purpose in life, your past AND your future. (PS, the anime is called A Destructive God Sits Next To Me, its just about a cat- I mean guy and a silly lil goober :3) Another thing that happens is he has a belt and e v e r y s i n g l e c h a r a c t e r pulled his belt and it was just funny to me.

If you're looking for a show that acknowledges the hand thing, Hilda does it well.
In the show, there's a very hierarchal civilization of just, little guys, who are simplified even in closeups to the point where their limbs are just lines.

The three main characters, Craig, JP, and Kelsey were in, I think a dark side room in the stump.
Yippee Celestia missuses her artist's ability for evil 🎉🎉
I see Adam in the thumbnail, I click!
You know, I'm a simple man. I see my baby Ranpo, I click on the video 😭 (please don't ask me about the plot of bsd, I've watched the anime and I have no fucking clue what is happening)
12:34 YOU CALLED ME OUT SO BAD 😭😭😭😭😭
You mention metal hair
My brain: Mettaton! His metal hair and metal hair gel!
Mentions Gaster later
My brain: Eee! Channel I just found today and already watched like 10 or so videos in a few hours like Undertale! New channel cool. Monkey brain happy. Lap around my room and little, fast claps.
14:15, here's one more example, flint's dad from cloudy with a chance of meatballs.
Love ya Celly
As someone obsessed with Gaster I wish I had the Wingdings eyes
11:31 hmm Murder Drones
Closed eye majin buu opening them hits harder than the black and red demon eyes sometimes
RANPO SPOTTED !?!??!?!?!?!
I mean, technically with the robot one, if people were thinking about it they could argue that it's for storing RAM or some other robotic thing that helps the android function, but nah. stylistic.
I am so bad at drawing hands, draws a hand uses my hand as a reference
These are all SOOOO good fuck yeah. I love the Outline trope 😂😂 its a skill I wish to one day have 😂
14:23 PURE VANILLA COOKIE FROM COOKIE RUN KINGDOM
Saw Bungo Stray Dogs and faceplanted into the video.
I faceplant into all of your videos, but I fell particularly hard on this one.
11:34 Michael Bay is absolutely a fan of this artstyle, just look at his Transformers designs, so many of them have hair yet they are robots
In the Duckman cartoon Duckman's glasses are his eyes, so when he removes them he no longer has any eyes.
I think that various symbols appearing above the head to showcase emotions should be real bc sometimes i just look at people and wish they would see that windows loading circle above my head bc i need time to process what they said to me
Same, but in reverse, I struggle so understand people, I wish emotions were that obvious
I love ranpo
I'm a simple man, I see ranpo I click.
🎶 It's an easy cheat, the animation's all complete 🎶
It wasn’t just done for their shillouette, though. That's also done to show the emotions and expressions of the characters so they don't seem blank when they're most needed.
Epic

14:33 flint lockwoods dad
the fact that here in Brazil we have a character called "Cascão" with fingerless feet with the lore that he aways wears socks while the other characters just...Dont have?
14:29 Pure Vanilla cookie refrence
The robot hair part reminded me of android 17 and 18
I watched a show where the main character, almost. every. single. episode said "OPEN YOUR EYES ALREADY!" And when that character did, he managed to tell you your entire purpose in life, your past AND your future. (PS, the anime is called A Destructive God Sits Next To Me, its just about a cat- I mean guy and a silly lil goober :3) Another thing that happens is he has a belt and e v e r y s i n g l e c h a r a c t e r pulled his belt and it was just funny to me.
damn, you can have HAPPY VIDEOS?
uncharted territory...
