    I really, really love sign-offs that include tons of technical details, such as this one.

    I love all the Michigan scenery during the SSB. Very proud to have been born and raised in this beautiful state!

      Same, love this state! The winters are absolute hell but it's nice to not have to worry about earthquakes or hurricanes. :)

    It was very common at sign on-sign off that stations used both O Canada and the SSB when they had viewership in Canada. WTVS was not the only station that did it.

      What about CBC stations? Some of them obviously have viewership in the US, but they only signed on or off with O Canada.

      WNED-TV in Buffalo, NY used to play "O Canada" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" during sign-on and sign-off many years ago!

    This guy reading off the technical information is the grown-up equivalent of your parents tucking you into bed and reading you a story that you fall asleep during. Something oddly satisfying and comforting.
    Also I wanna start a band called Domestic Fixed Satellite Earth Station.

    CBC used the o Canada with glowing hearts (film from 1979 comes from NFB Canada) during Sign on and off since 1980's

    The technical maintenance portion of the sign off sounds like it was live. You can hear the mic switch just before Paul Winter speaks. Very rare to have an actual live booth announcer in the 1990s.

    Canadian national anthem begins at 5:55 and the U.S. national anthem begins at 7:25

    Detroit television has a great presence in Windsor. So much so a Windsorite need not learn about Celsius. He can still listen to Detroit weather reports in Fahrenheit.

    In the case of Detroit, Windsor, Ontario is considered part of the Detroit TV market (or use to be).

    There have been friendly relations between Detroit and Windsor for many years. With Canada Day on July 1 and Independence Day on July 4, it is usually a long riverfront celebration during the holidays, or at least it used to be, until Detroit was ruined.

      As far as I know they still have the Freedom festival between the two holidays. I remember watching the fireworks every year when we got WDIV on our cable system.

    WTVS and WWJ-TV channel 4 are the ONLY TV stations serving Detroit-Windsor-Pontiac that have studios in DETROIT PROPER. Everyone else has studios in Southfield (the WTVS and WWJ-TV ch 4 transmitter are in Southfield).

      First the WWJ-TV call letters now belong to CBS 62 and have since 1995. Their studios are in Southfield. Channel 4 changed its call to WDIV in 1978. WTVS moved its offices and studios to Wixom in 2005.

    I noticed that this is very impersonal, unlike a BBC One or Two closedown. Why is this? The latter was very intimate and sometimes quite humorous.
    Also, why no play of the Royal Anthem of Canada?

      For whatever reason we pre-recorded nearly all of our sign-offs. The Royal Anthem is likely not played because this is a U.S. station, not a Canadian one.

      I say PBS. Our local network (Prairie Public Television) doesn't leave the air at night. But I've seen many other PBS networks sign off through these videos. I find them very interesting and often strangely comforting.

    Analog television audio in the US has been FM since the 1940s. It was simply 155kW aural, at full modulation or dead silence.
