1st Impression Of His BUS + Plans

  • We jump back in time for this video. I made an effort to film my first impressions of Haydens Volvo bus last winter and have slowly been filming as he tears it apart and then we talk about the next plan for the bus. It seemed like the time to share it!
Funny editing this and realising that I was brutal with my opinion. I think the only plus I mentioned was the extra space and how solid it felt... there are other advantages, I promise.

Hardwood floor with rugs isn't very warm for a Bus in winter.
IN my bus i have carpet on the floor with underlay But i agree carpet on the walls is hard to keep clean.

Hayden might want to look up the Newport Solid Fuel Heater/Mini Pellet Stoves. Which you can install in boats/RVs. The Newport Fuel Heater is 10×7.9 × 15.6 12.6 lbs.
He would need a fan to circulate air flow and a carbon dioxide detector. I have seen a van dweller install a mini wood stove in his cargo van and it worked great and gave the van a very cozy look and feel, plus it kept he very warm during the cold months.
Good Luck with your home. 🚌

Hmm ...I see another project coming along 😜
I would do insulation and then thin wood against the walls , like a veneer, and maybe look at insulating the floor and putting pallet wood on that... as it would be more hardy if loading goods, but easy to clean. Maybe a piece of carpet on the bedroom floor 🤷‍♂️...
Defo add a diesel heater or a little fire place, you get them for vans and busses...

    • @TravellingK

If your walls are two aluminum panels sandwiched together, drill some holes in the inside panel and fill the dead space with expanding spray foam insulation. Then install wood- panel facades over them.

Travelling K he needs help Karen, and guidance in what will work best. I suggest a picnic table setup in there for meals totally removable and maybe camping cupboards for storage, there are some great options these days and so easy to pack down and remove. Even sink and cooking options. Bubble wrap on the windows for winter in the bedroom. And pull down blinds for all I windows which you can cut to size. Makes the room feel so much larger and brighter than curtains, they even have blockout for insulation. The walls could have rubber matting from bunnings that comes squares, will insulate and be easier to keep clean. There are some ideas for you to check out. Have fun.

Lotta glass and steel, so hard to heat. But a Snugger could be made to work. For a shower I use a stock pot. I don't know what you would call them over there. It is a deep stainless steel pot that holds a lot of liters. I put a valve at the bottom that can take the heat, like a radiator drain valve of old. Heat water, put it up high and open the valve.

Since it is a work/living bus I'd worry about full carpet, and nice wood floors, as the one would be difficult to clean and the other would get scratched from all the stuff always being moved back and forth. Perhaps put something like vinyl flooring, and throw rugs. There is a sound proofing/insulation in the states, and the UK, don't know if you have it in NZ (Camper Van Caravan insulation Thermal Single Bubble) a lot of people I know use it, then you can put a thin sheet of plywood over it, or something. It's difficult living comfy in a working bus, but hey, you guys can always spent the cozy times together in your camper! ;)

    • @TravellingK

Definitely does not look as cozy and comfortable as your van Karen. and yes i agree! The curtains need to go! I'd line the walls for sure. Anything is possible. It would look and feel much more like a living space with some improvements. Hayden is obviously very comfortable living in rough conditions but as a couple, he may need to ensure it is workable (and comfortable) if you are both going to be sleeping and living in the same space otherwise it may not be long before those rose tinted glasses will be off (just my opinion).

Fun video. K don't push too hard on changing the man cave bus. Put your feet in his shoes. Years ago I started dating a woman who was very messy. I'm not a neat freak but I like order. While she was at work one day ,I put a big effort into a tidy up. She did not like it and let me know. It wasn't a deal killer because we eventually married. Our couples psychologist said I made a big mistake with the clean up without talking to her first. Good luck!

Hi Karen and Hayden, thats an omnibus usually used on suburban bus services, (around town), those Volvos were decent vehicles
with a darned good gear box with evenly spaced gears unlike the early model Hino's which took forever to get up to a cruising speed
because the gearing was not good. I drove for Railways Road Services for 20 years during which i drove Volvo coaches out of Wellington, amongst other vehicles. The Volvos were exceptionally quick through the gears and very comfortable with air bag suspension. Sometimes when running late they would cruise at 120kph comfortably on the straights, (illegal of course).

I’d go for a commercial lino throughout and up the start of the walls. Serviceable and will add an element of insulation. Then add rugs for warmth and to give a homely feel(also easy to pull out when loading up with tools) . You could make some pull up Roman style blinds with old woollen blankets (hospice shop) to keep the cold out. Also a woollen blanket or woollen underlay over the slats of the base before you put the mattress on will make a huge difference to warmth. Good luck with your change around!

I've had a RV/Caravan with carpet all over. Walls to ceiling. Hated it. You could put up foam board with paneling? The door leaks, you can try a wool or cotton rug over the entrance. It should stop the draft for the most part. Karen, most guys have a high tolerance for messiness. Good luck on it all.

One good point Volvos are have good running gear and parts are almost ready available if you was in the UK you could get your insulation from a company called insulation seconds on EBay , and a cheap deisle chines heater which will warm the bus up

Sorry K you will hate your plan of Wood and Lino. With Hayden moving his equipment in and out the walls and floor will be damaged. When the bus is moving the tools etc will rub against the wall leaving marks, dents, and scratches. I travel a lot with loads of equipment and despite regular painting, it only takes one trip to make the walls look like they have not been touched in years. I must say I hate carpet due to the "hard to clean" fact, but my first impression when I saw the bus walls was "what a great idea". Wood is too soft and Lino rips when things drag over it (don't get me started on the damage from stones in the shoes). Floating floors Damage easily. Stainless steel or aluminum is heavy and cold. If anyone knows of a tough material that is not heavy, I would love to hear from them.
