Fun Fact: this film was originally going to be called *Leafmen,* because it was based on a children’s book by one of Blue Sky’s longtime collaborators, William Joyce, who previously worked with the studio and director Chris Wedge on *Robots (2005)* as both, a co-producer and production designer.
However, in 2012, Fox decided to change the title to *Epic,* because they thought Leafmen sounded too much like a “boys movie”, and they wanted to capitalise on the trend of Walt Disney Animation Studios using only one word in the title of their films. Ironically, everyone at Blue Sky were NOT happy with the title change (including Chris Wedge himself) and the film only made a worldwide total of $268.4 million.

Something cool about this movie is that the archery is animated extremely accurately and the leafmen use a super accurate and quick bow technique

I just thought, a way to make this movie wayyy more of an appealing story, don't have any regular people. Just have it be centered on the little people and the war within the Forest. Even with the slugs it sounds much more fun to watch than "honey i shrunk the kids" mixed with LOTR

@@elephorofonius a bit late yes, but what I meant was have the movie be in general focused on the war between the bogan-bois and leaf-men, with plot changed and all. If you took out the main girl and her dad and didn't change anything else obviously it wouldn't make sense. My point is a movie about the wars of the tiny people would be super interesting (perhaps Epic) without having the big stompers

I think I only remember watching this movie only once in my life, and watching this video made me realize how crazy this movie actually was.
If you want another film about someone who gets shrunken down and explores the magic around them, starring a popular singer, check out Arthur and the Invisibles, starring Madonna, David Bowie, Snoop Dogg and the Good Doctor himself Freddie Highmore.
There's plenty of inappropriate jokes and janky animation in this live action animation hybrid film based off a book series.
There are even sequels (in the UK they just squished the 2nd and 3rd into one film).
I still have the movie on Blu Ray, it was my introduction to Stayin Alive 😎

I don’t know why or how, but this morning I was having random shower thoughts about the caterpillar from Epic. Then somehow Razzle connected with me on the astral plain and pumped this out.
NOBODY EVER seems to remember this movie no matter who I ask! This was one of my Summer Camp field trips back when it came out to go see this in theaters! And despite it looking SO AMAZING and having Beyonce in the cast, 99% of the people in my life I've asked have NEVER seen this movie! Yet I remember it like it's my 1st born child

I love how this movie came out 3 years after The Secret Life of Arrietty. When i was a kid and saw a trailer for Epic i just thought, "Dayum they just kinda ripped off this other movie about being super tiny in a house in the forest."
I was severely obsessed with both of these movies when i was a kid
I mean there are a ton of stories about becoming tiny because it’s a cool idea. Those are two COMPLETELY different properties, like they have entirely different tones, themes, characters, origin stories, visuals, plots…….

I loved this movie as a kid. The random girl becoming queen genuinely made me so happy and I was crushed when the first queen died. I was invested in the relationships of all the characters and overall I was into this movie way more than I should have been

Epic was my obsession movie as a 9 year old. You want to know why? The very specific trailer that I watched for it had “Lightening Strikes” by Snow Patrol as the music and I was amazed that a movie had one my absolute favorite songs at the time. I still love the movie concept, it’s very nice.
I was wondering since they said the video is past the 30 minute mark, I was worried the last 10 or so minutes were just gonna be “he’s an imPASTA” 😂😂😂😂
Epic was by far my favorite film to work on at Blue Sky, while I was there. All of the films were a delight, but Epic, Ferdinand, and Spies In Disguise were an absolute joy to work on.
But dear god, simulating those Bird Reigns they hold onto was oddly annoying as crap to simulate.
In a way, Epic is forgettable... but part of it sticks in my brain for some reason after all these years. The story isn't anything special, the characters are decent... but the visuals and animation, making the forest into this vast landscape... it's amazing.
It seriously had all the components to be something fun AND beautiful... but they fumbled the plot with a mixture of both complicated and simplistic storytelling components. I'm still entertained by portions of this movie, but it really is a shame it didn't achieve its full potential. But at least it's not a jukebox musical! And Beyonce's song for this (the credits song) is still lovely to me :>

@【S P A C E M A N】 Right?? I actually loved the concept of the *actual* love story, and those parts of the movie were written with some really genuine moments that oozed chemistry. And then they put it next to... some weird animation chops. Really weird jukebox musical decisions, which lead to odd pacing. A story littered with lazy plot devices and contrivances rather than natural story beats. An absolutely idiotic secondary love story - HOW should that little elf twerp actually be allowed to get with her sister?! He literally tried to manipulate her with a love potion after she clearly didn't feel romantically inclined. Some really annoying character moments on top of that.
It was really unfortunate - if it hadn't been trapped in production hell, then maybe the result would've been much better :/

i’m in high school and sometimes they’ll have movie days where we can get out of our last period to just chill in the auditorium as they play the movie on the large sheet on the stage through a projector. i was sat up front with a couple friends and we were just kinda goofing and gaffing at different points but during the scene where queen tara dies, i just remember my friend next to me, so loudly yelling, “BEYONCÉ NO!!” and it was so loud that the small group of people around us starting laughing and it sent me and my friends into just a ton of wheezing and cackling. oh yeah and when the frog guy came up we were suspicious at first then when we realized it was pitbull, we could not contain ourselves, we proceeded to refer to the frog as only mr worldwide and made “DALE” jokes.

IIRC, Beyoncé only took this role because she didn’t get the role of Tiana from The Princess and The Frog

Went and saw this in high school, theatre was empty and I hooked up with the girl I was with (that was Epic) so I dont remember a single part of it. So watching 4 drunk guys react to it is going to be my first impression xD
