    Plexi clean to a Back Tea distortion. Sounds like a signature Gravy pedal right there.

    I've been using the Black Tea on my mini pedal board for my Beatles tribute band dirt tones for years now. It works absolutely perfectly for my gain needs, for that band. I actually run my board thu a newer Vox AC30S1 amp set clean. What I love about the Black Tea is that you can't get a bad sound out of it, and it's extremely versatile. Edge of break up tones, classic rock crunch, or high gain goodness. In fairness, I've never tried the Golden Plexi. There's only so many mini pedals I need LOL :). And I have an XVive Golden Brownie for my Marshall flavored needs. The Black Tea and the Golden Brownie on the same mini pedal board + a mini Ibanez Tubescreamer for a lead boost gives me MORE than everything I need.
    Great video Dave. I love how in depth you get. Very helpful...and real. Just subscribed. Cheers from Connecticut USA!!!

    To me, the Golden Plexi sounds like it has a bit more compression going on which works a lot better for the John Frusciante thing. The Black Tea sounds good also, but not compressed enough for that tone.

    You want to know what I think? I already have a Golden Plexi and love it. I just went and ordered a Black Tea. I look forward to stacking them! At the price of these two pedals, you can have both of them for less than the price of a double OD pedal. And they both sound GREAT!

    Love the sounds of both the black tea and golden plexi. I can also understand about being torn about two really good pedals in which you can't pick one. I have a dunlop ffm2 germanium fuzz face that is my favorite fuzz pedal and I finally bought the blue silicon ffm1 second hand and I'm also torn between the two.

    If the BT had more gain would the fizz appear as it does in the GP? Be interesting to know just how similar the circuits are. Could always boost the BT and see if any more can be wrung from it. Sounds fine to me the way it is though. As for the EQ differences, seems like a solution would be just to have a pedal with more controls, preferably active ones. Quick tweak between tunes and you're good to go!

    Hi Dave, at first I'm sorry that my English isn't very well....
    I think golden plexi is doing really good at the John Frusciante clean tone,but unfortunately it's hard to buy in my country, Jackhammer is hard to buy too. I'm wordenring can any plexi-style pedal can do well at the John Frusciante dirty clean tone and control wh10 ds2's volume jump?Can something like Carl Marting Plexitone or any pedal can do it?
    Thank you for bringing the tone knowledge to us !!!!

    You can talk yourself into a decision as easily as talk out of one. Both have their own sound. - Do they work together? Is one better in front of the other? How do they sit with other pedals you're using? - I'd consider these before a final choice.

  • @draelyc

    The Golden Plexi seems to me to have a softer, warmer voicing, vs the harder-edged voicing of the Black Tea (I hear that difference on both settings). The Plexi strikes my ear as being more “amp like,” for whatever that’s worth to you. Great tones and playing, as always!

    I spent ages watching Andertons demos of these two pedals and couldn't decide on a favourite so ended up not buying either of them. Still couldn't pick one out after watching this, although am swaying very very slightly towards the Black Tea for it's clean and JF sounds. So, to sum up...buy both, they're cheap enough.

    they seem exactly the same but completely different!!! really though, i thought the black tea seemed more of a natural 'tube' break up on low gain and would probably cut through the mix better at high gain but i did prefer the sound of the plexi at high gain.

    I had to watch this video twice, at first on my phone and chilling and the second with my studio headphones.
    And the verdict is ...
    Draw!!!!
    Because I love the golden plexi for the John Frusciante cleanish. And I really love the distorsion of the black tea.
    Both are important for what we search and need.
    Both on the pedal board that’s the perfect choice.
    And the behave greatly with DS2 and WH10.
    Again a great video!
    Greetings from Belgium and keep up your good work, you’re amazingly awesome!
    Always a pleasure to watch your videos.

    I had a cool idea inspired by this video, Dave you should do a Tone City/Andertons collaboration pedal in the style of Greg Koch, Rabea and Danish Pete...How about a 2 in 1 pedal with these two called the Black and Gold, with the circuits tweaked to be absolutely perfect for you and extras like a switch to change the order....killer lower and higher gain drives in one box covering Vox and Marshall style tones. I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

      So I watched the other Anderton vid when they ran the Durple into the Fro and it sounded GREAT!!!!....So I am thinking about the Durple into a Black Tea ..with the booster they make right from my Les Paul and all that with some Strymon reverb......YUPPERS!!!!!!

    I'm getting earlier and earlier...wow.
    There's something about your playing, idk how to describe it, it's different every time I tune in, unique and very varied. Super inspiring.
    I did prefer the Tea, nice and 'plummy'. You can try to run a booster beside it maybe for more gain but even on its own it's a monster!
    Best of luck with your move, hope you settle well. ✌️

  • @IanLuckett
    @IanLuckett 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a very tough call Dave. I have to say I preferred the Black Tea to be honest (after several listens through LOL) the Golden Plexi did have a slight "brittleness" to the top end, and the Black Tea seemed somehow more pleasantly rounded. Either will d the job of course, but the real answer is in how many times you grinned while paying them (I know that's hardly a seriously robust test, but it works for me every time!)

  • @craig7810

    It’s hard to move on but when something new comes along you are compelled to change. Black T just sounds more versatile for your style. At the end of the day you have both so you can swop at will. BT is the one for the primary board and GP is good for the backup..

  • @JoeBaermann
    @JoeBaermann 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To me it sounds like the Black Tea cleans up slightly more than the Golden Plexi. both sound real good though, so with your setup I would use both.
    I would also suggest trying all your drives chained up, an idea could be to set them in order lowest to highest gain, if you got one just for a clean boost with some tone shaping have that in front.
    Warning, this can be a time consuming thing to start with! :D
    As example, I started to use an 808 with almost no gain followed by a Getaway Driver at low gain and a Bangeetar with the gain a bit above noon, a Kongpressor after the drives to tighten it up (only slightly to avoid loosing dynamics) and a Two Stroke (after delay, reverb, tremolo) as a mid/volume boost, that added 6 usable options of drive combinations with an without boost and still the ability to use a fuzz in front, although with all drives engaged and going into high gain territory not all fuzzes play along well.
    Recently I replaced 3 drives, CR120 preamp and 4 other pedals with a Mooer Preamp Live, got my CR120's dirty channel just on the edge of breakup (added a few drive pedals for additional tone shaping and gain staging) tone profiled to it's Rockeverb channels and an Orange PPC412 IR on the DI output which matches the sound of my real cabs in the room.
    Gives me 2 clean and 2 driven channels, clean, clean with slight break up (for the Furcoat Fuzz with an low octave added), rhythm and lead, also got a scrambler style fuzz in front to go crazy with.
    No idea how people usually do with a preamp box like that, I got both dirty channels going with low gain settings and using build in pre boosts to add the missing extra, to my surprise it's Riot and Klon gives me a rhythm and lead sound I like besides being able to cut trough a mix with other guitars.
    I did use some time tweaking it so I can use the channels for different pickups without the need changing anything on the 5 patches that I use, I don't like fiddling around with stomp box knobs while playing, and as long as each of my guitars character get's trough I'm a happy camper.

    I prefer the Black Tea. The Golden Plexi clean is too distorted for my tastes. It's that mid range distortion that accounts fir the perceived brightness and aggressiveness. As for the Plexi's hot mode while nice it's a bit too muddy for me. To me the Black Tea is a nice combination of open sound and distortion. But in the end they're both great and it's all a matter of taste.

  • @jwlademann
    @jwlademann 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looking at the schematics of the originals (like a lot of budget pedals these are straight clones, in this case of the Carl Martin AC-Tone and Plexitone apparently) they are very similar pedals with the Plexi using LED soft clipping and the AC using Transistors for clipping instead. So that's the reason they sound similar. Generalising because I'm no expert, LEDs tend to clip with more "knee" to the wave form so will tend to have a harsher/crunchier sound. The Guvnor uses LED clipping as well but In a different way as hard clippers. The type of clipping also effects the amount of compression and distortion available, hence the difference there. You could actually have a pedal that toggles between the two pretty easily...but that would mean less sales I guess.

    • @EpicStuffMan1000
      @EpicStuffMan1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's right, LEDs also have a higher headroom so they clip less with the same amount of amplification (compared to something like a silicion or germanium diode). They also light up when they clip, which looks great.

    Black tea had slightly more mid range i think listening on headphones, I bet the circuit is identical in each pedal with just a slight value difference in one or more of the components probably a resistor or two. Also you need to try humbuckers too and maybe plug into a few amps see which appeals more. from what i can hear i'm liking the Black Tea.

    Preferred the Golden Plexi in all examples. The Black Tea has a kind of Vox thing going on. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

    Black tea for me. I thought it was killer on the original 19 pedal demo and I thought it was better again. The Golden Plexi sounds bit harsher to me.
    Edit - And then I got to the point on the video where you said just that about it being harsher.... 😄

      I love mine, apart from the scroll function. It does so much for the money.

      @@adam-sy2fj I'm no tone wizard like Dave, but, I'd say nothing in it comes too close to a Boss DS2, which is essential to J.F. tone. But you can get pretty far with everything else. I used Dave's settings for his zoom from the Desert Island Pedal video, and they sound the same.
