    Just a few weeks ago I drove a BMW i3 from Munich to Karlsruhe in Germany in one go without stopping,. That were 296 km. I reached my parking spot in Karlsruhe with 11% SOC left. Admittedly, I used the right lane only and stayed behind the trucks and the weather was quite nice. But still, 11,5 kWh/100km is an impressive consumption.

    Thanks Björn for yet another useful, informative and fun review. As an 2017 i3 Rex (with the 30kw battery) owner I thought worth mentioning that there is a very significant difference in range and driving dynamics between the comfort, ecopro and ecopro+ modes. On highway trips we usually drive on a mix of eco pro and ecopro+ and easily exceed 180km of battery range at 120km/h average speed, with 2 adults and 1 child in the car with luggage. Typically when on 500km+ long journeys we would use the range extender, allowing us to do the trip with one charging/refuelling stop. The car is not ideal for long journeys (we made long journeys on a Model 3, which provided a much nicer experience), but for our usage, which is 90% city driving and three or four 1000km road trips per year, it is a fantastic car.

    Hi Bjorn. I own the i3 REX and the range prediction you had is correct. The reason why it suddenly decreased 10km is because you changed from a city road (it show you the range if you driving on city roads) to semi-highway: in that case as soon you enter the highway the car adjust the range to highway speed range. One additional challenge for the car was that you didn’t activate the navigation, therefore the car couldn’t know that after the city streets you suddenly jump to highway (with navigation on, it would have know it), therefore the adaptation of the remaining range.
    Regards Renato

    I have just bought a 2019 i3 42Kwh and have just performed a long range test at 10-17C. I started with 100% battery and a predicted range of 158miles on the GOM. I have driven hybrids now for 12 years and I am aware what a light pedal foot has on economy. So off we set on the 84 mile trip with a mix of motorway (60%) A road (40%) . Outbound heading for the coast there's more negative gradients but it will all level up on the return. As this is a max range test I put the car in Eco PRO and turn off the heating/cooling. I get between 10 - 22Kwh/100Km and a light foot also mean that I see quite a bit of regen. When I arrived at my destination I had a GOM range left of ! 130 Miles (84 + 130) = 214 miles.
    I charge to 100% again and then on the return when I arrived home the GOM said 100 miles so a return range of 184 miles. I expect these ranges to drop by switching to Comfort and adding some heating however even if these settings suck 20 miles of range that's still 194 and 168 miles so taking the worst case 168miles that's very close to what BMW expect this car to achieve and by switching to ECO PRO 180 is also possible for most of the year and for most journeys. Remember my home journey was full of positive gradients to reach the destination at 333m.
    So with this I have confidence this car can easily achieve its 160 mile range as quoted under these temps which in the UK is pretty standard. I am well impressed with this car it drives likes its on rails and accelerates like a rocket. :-)

Some other cars state more than 50kw but start slow and only realise the higher speed for 20% of the whole battery, also good luck in finding a charger more than 50kw. By the time we have more 100kw+ chargers my i3 will be in the bin 😂

    The i3 is efficient in terms of electric motor, battery management and weight saving. The major downside for longer motorway trips is the poor aerodynamic efficiency. Would be interesting to see a mixed run though with more acceleration / deceleration parts where weight and regen braking play a significant role compared to constant speed on the motorway.

    The GOM is only accurate if you use navigation. Then I regularly use it to drive the battey down to 8% for a charging stop (to prevent the REX from activating). BMW should explain this. They should also indicate that the display of accurate numbers takes some time after the navigation has been started, because the topographic factors will be calclulated. My first generation i3 has low wind noise and is very stable. Therefore I wondered what other drivers are talking about. Until I got a loaner i3 of the actual generation, which had lots of wind noise and felt unstable at high speed. So maybe it is a generational thing or my car is manually optimized due to it being a press car in its childhood.

    The i3 was a design that was ahead of its time when it was new. It is now quite old and out dated, very much a "last generation" EV.
    I think it is a cool car, but there are so many things that show BMW didn't really know what EV drivers wanted when they designed the car, and they haven't seemed to update them at all since then. The fact that it seems to be so difficult to activate the heating/cooling when charging the car is a perfect example. If the car is charging, you should be able to have as much function of the HVAC as you would if it isn't charging. It should be as easy as turning the car on, as it is in cars like the Bolt/Ampera or Hyundai/Kia products. Also, not showing things like battery state of charge in percentage, not showing charging power, EV owners want to know that stuff.
    The range of the car just basically means it appeals to a different/smaller audience, which is fine as long as it is reflected in the price. Can it be used for longer road trips? As long as the charging infrastructure is there, sure. But there are better EVs for longer road trips, and they aren't all Teslas. That being said, this is probably a better EV than many for in-town use.

    Hi Bjorn, nice video. I have an i3 and what I know is that I cannot not setup the final SOC when charging. I'm only doing 30-40km per day so I'm looking for a way to only charge the car to a SOC of maximum 70-80%. Is there a home charger that has this functionality. Do you or anyone else know what charger would offer this useful function ? Thanks

      @asaha7547 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      AC chargers don't know SOC, the only logical solution for your case if possible set charging start time to something like 5 AM

      For my electric bicycle I have a charger where I can set the SOC (Cycle Satiator).

    The not so good high speed stability surely is affected also by those bicycle tyres. It takes very little effort to change the direction of those..

    Could the stability issue be due to thinner tires as well?

      Yes, I have an i3S and with the wider summer tires its great on the highway but with winter tires ( same dimension as the standard i3) its horrible.

    • @rainersta7073
      @rainersta7073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes...90 km means nearly 400 km distance (summer)...like in City. 110 km/h means about 280 km....if you really want to save, stay behind trucks and 400 km might be possible. Consumption is exponentiell driving up specially more than 120 km/h

    5:50 Re: Cruise Control, its super annoying and a bit dangerous that it suddenly deactivates and makes the car go full regen. You can disable the distance holding feature by holding down the button on the steering wheel which regulates the distance, then it will just turn into regular cruise control.

      @@TraditionalAnglican I've driven the ID3, and for a few reasons I didn't like it. If feels very cheap. The materials inside are from lower quality compared to the i3.
      It's a different world. The id3 is very old school with its body architecture compared to the carbonfiber i3.
      On paper the i3 charges slower, but in practice it's rather quick. Flat charging up to 50kW till 86,5% charging level.
      Yes for sure the id3 has some more up to date features, but the quality and interior design makes for me the difference. The id3 feels very much like a cheap version of the Golf inside. They made deliberately the choice to make the id3 cheaper. It's not my thing. I prefer more the i3.
      I still hope for a 160Ah version of the i3. It would make it for me the perfect car.
      With all e cars, it's the same. There is no perfect one. It's just interesting to find the car that's matching your needs and expectations. I almost switched to the model 3, but pour Service and the hype around Tesla pulled me back to the i3. The perfect engineered, high quality ( don't take the range extender version) underdog car. Not perfect, but lovely;)
