Araki once said in a RAW interview that he was not a fan of being held to one color scheme for his cast. He alludes to this in one of his lessons in his how to create manga book (Im sorry I cannot remember the quote I read it before the pandemic). Anyways, he used to go back and forth way more as a younger artist which is fascinating. His detective character had multiple five different color schemes and that was such a short story 😂

I genuinely hope Araki sees these colours that Shueisha chose and then writes an arc where the characters go back home just to change clothes.

It's so strange to me how The Matte Kudasai has a concrete vision behind its color choices, with the green body and orange digits being reminiscent of a red-eyed tree frog (despite not having red eyes), while Usagi himself is wholly unpleasant to look at. It's not even a funny bad, like Dragona's Fred Flintstone getup....

I think with the Jojolands, it feels like the attempts to oversaturate everything is more because of the setting, being that of a tropical locale with the sun bearing heavily upon everything. It feels very apparent when you look at how garish the skin shading is in the latest TJJL color release, like they're trying to approximate the lighting without figuring out how to best apply it, much less if it's really necessary to render (covers don't, which should give Shueshia ample excuse not to)

Adding onto that, the way characters look really affects the impression they leave on people. Take Usagi for example. I remember in chapter one, most people I saw really disliked him. It was rare to find someone who would say that they found him cool, but then suddenly in chapter two, he’s given a hat and now a lot more people are starting to open up to him. And the same thing is happening again, where now I’m starting to see more people saying they dislike not just the colours, but Usagi himself after he was given that really saturated green outfit. This decision is already ending up hurting the series rather than helping it, so it’ll be interesting to see if Shueisha do anything about it later on

    • @unasushumana
      @unasushumana 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

@@neoramaredzone8544 We probably aren't, from Part 3 onwards almost every character has stayed with the exact same color scheme through the whole part, the only exceptions are characters like Trish who change their whole outfit, but even them is not a given, for example in Part 7 Gyro and Johnny change to winter clothes for various arcs, and in the colored version they have the exact same colors as their regular outfits, so no, Usagi is probably gonna stay Tingle Green for the entire part.

Thank you for putting this into words. Whenever I recommend someone steel ball run, they almost always go towards the coloured manga. Just like with that Jobin panel, the coloured manga just does not have the correct tones and usually draws over the intense crosshatching.
Also, big agree with Toru's design in the coloured manga. Monochrome and volume covers look so much better than the coloured scans.

This is a really excellent video. You put into words a lot of the problems that I've had with the colored manga, and your example of improving the JJL Ch100 cover really shows how big of a difference a few minor changes can make.
In discussions I've had with people who prefer the colored manga, I've found that just pointing out that it looks very ugly most of the time is not very persuasive. The main thing that always gets brought up in defense of it is that some people find it easier to parse what is happening in some of the more confusing scenes in the colored version. I think that certainly, it is true in some cases that just having different people and objects be different colors can help with readability in some of Araki's more confusing fights, even if those colors are ugly. But other than pointing out the fact that Shueisha also gets confused sometimes and colors things wrong, I've never really found any way to persuade these people to give the black and white version a shot.
A lot of people really exaggerate just how hard it is to understand what's happening in the black and white manga and make it out as it it's just completely incomprehensible. I'd guess it's probably just that these people don't have much experience reading black and white manga and don't really know "how" to read it. When I first started getting into manga, it really did take me a while to really learn what to pay attention to. Initially, I mainly just read the dialogue, briefly glanced at each panel, and usually didn't pay attention to sound effects at all. I didn't really take much time to understand what specific actions each panel and sound effect is trying to convey and as a result I missed a lot of crucial details. I just wish I knew how to persuade these people to give the black and white version a shot and overcome the hurdles of figuring out what to pay attention to in manga, because the original black and white version is really beautiful.

I definitely feel you on people over exaggerating how confusing the original b&w manga’s paneling is. It’s one of the biggest criticisms I’ve seen against the series, yet Jojo’s has pretty consistently maintained popularity and acclaim for literal decades. You can’t really get away with poorly communicating your visuals in a purely visual medium and simultaneously amass the status that Jojo’s has by accident or wave it away as a total fluke. I feel like if Araki’s art truly is/was as incomprehensible as so many people claim it to be, the series just wouldn’t exist as it does now. Fans read and enjoyed the manga just fine before the Jojo Digital colored comics came in 2012.

I felt so betrayed by the colored manga when Toru's color scheme came out because I actually love his design. But I never could wrap my head around why all the colored versions looked so bad, except in Araki's paintings. You did a great job putting to words the issue; that his design is loud enough so having equally loud colors makes it a mess.

I agree it seems they are just coloring with crazy colors to keep up with Araki's style. But they forget the biggest point of his style is that even the crazy alternate colors, the composition still conveys the original look. The anime does it well but the manga fails sometimes. They chose a bright neon sky just to fill negative space, but in the anime no matter how weird the yellow sky was it still felt natural. With Araki's color composition no matter if Dio is painted with pink hair and green skin, the selection still conveys blonde hair and natural skin tone.
In the Manga sometimes it feels like they are just choosing contrasting colors. They choose one bright saturated color to fill in white space, one contrasting slightly less saturated color to fill in black spaces, and whatever is in between is the mix of both colors. No real relationship between the composition and the object

As someone who colors manga, not only do I appreciate the showing of pieces done by other colorists (especially Elias he's very talented) but I also appreciate the speaking on the topic. There are some things I'd like to add that would help in understanding all of this given my nearly 3 years of experience with consistent coloring.
First off, it's mentioned that you wonder what the production pipeline is like. When you gather as much experience coloring manga as some of us and have to stick to a very simplistic colorization as this with a team you'd be surprised how fast this stuff can be completed especially when the production committee is using a very basic two-tone shading with consistent white highlighting which is the reason for the "glowing skin" point. Given how it looks, I doubt they're actually taking advantage of layer types to create an atmosphere and are sticking to the basic Multiply/Normal combo with some Add (Glow) on occasion. It's because of this that you get a very bland-looking production at least in comparison to fan colorings which can include brushes of their own choosing, more flexible deadlines, and more stylistic choices.
Second, for the over saturation point I believe that might be due to the displays that are being used. I doubt they're all working on different displays along with different programs. A good amount of mangaka stick to clip studio but even then the displays could be quite old which means they're going a little overboard but in actuality it looks fine on the displays they're created on. Why they don't double check these things though is odd in my opinion. The reading on mobile thing is also just stupid as fan-made manga colorings look perfectly fine no matter where you're checking. Again, this is likely due to these mostly being produced on modern-day Apple/Android devices where social media is typically consumed on.
Third, at 7:57 you can see an obvious difference between the two. The main reason for this is partially on the part of the color team but there's a clear lack of texture that's being used which is understandable on the part of the coloring team as having to consistently keep tone patterns in check and add them for every single thing that used it prior would double the workload. Araki on the other hand can simply do it whenever as he himself is the producer of the original piece. The thing is though, sometimes when cleaning up the pages for coloring purposes you can lose some of that pre-made texture and would have to decide between adding or removing all of it. It also can darken tones too if you color over them so that's why most stick to removing it (take black and white gradients as an example).
Fourth, at the 8:50 mark or around that area I think you can make an argument for how colors are decided. I sometimes choose whatever looks real and only take liberties in color choices if I understand it's symbolic meaning to the panel. With other colorists it ranges but a lot of them just kind of color it to have the most contrast since good contrasting pieces tend to do well algorithmically.
Fifth, the Tohru panel is something that I'd assume to be a problem on their lighting and with shading. The pallet isn't the problem, it's the fact that the way the light comes down forces the colors to be as loud as they are. You could have a much more better on the eyes piece here if you shifted the lighting and allowed for darker tones even if it doesn't make sense in the context given that JoJo's is known for dramatic hue shifts. In the end, a lot of these fumbles are due to a cohesive creative vision and a workflow that perpetuates a get-shit-done mentality rather than one that has passion behind it to add to the experience.
Lastly, that redone panel looks fine on your part especially since it was just quick photoshop changes. However, even the other piece looked good it just lacked the extra work necessary to make it better. One of the key things beginner colorists forget is to add their own shadows and highlights to a piece and chain themselves to the pre-baked ones that the mangaka already put in there. While it is a lot easier, I think the extra time to change things into your own way can make things a lot more creative. You somewhat displayed this by sticking to a more earthy look but the surreal colors that are opposite of everything the manga sticks to with the original is good. They just did the bare minimum with the shading. Anyways, that's all I've got.
edit: if you'd like to see my colorings I make them on my Instagram page @govian.exe

One solution I can think of is a color palette. I have one with 150 colors or so, they are various smaller palettes group together based on similarity. It's a bit hard to set up but once you do it makes color picking significantly easier, as the colors you pick tend to work well together.
The coloring team could take color palettes from Araki's works and organize them, which would make the process faster. I like this approach because you can mix and match different color schemes which gives you a lot of options. On it's own it might not be enough but with layer blending modes it's plently. Using clipping masks and alpha lock would make testing color way easier too.

great video! it’s nice to see the feelings and concerns many jojo fans have for the color manga being put into real words.
it’s very frustrating when you observe an image and think it looks unpleasant but you can’t actually express WHY you think it looks unpleasant to others, or even to yourself, besides the simple reason of “the colors are too bright”. like yeah, the colors (especially in 8 & 9) are way too bright and saturated but there’s more issues than only that and it’s been difficult to pinpoint exactly what those other reasons are.
your examples of other problems finally put these unclear thoughts i had into words, for example:
    • why araki’s colors and the saturations choices work so well together in his illustrations
    • how shueisha’s colors change the mood / impact of a scene and why it matters that the dark & light values should stay true to the original black & white manga
    • the grayscale versions of the jobin scene comparing original to shueisha’s version and showcasing how the value change is effecting the scenes original intent.
thanks for making this video! 🩷

after finally reading through jojolion, but it being the first time reading jojos in its traditional monochrome art, i must say shueisha really botched it after part 7. also i like how i came up with my own completely original colour schemes for the cast as i didnt have any preconcieved notion of what shuiesha had decided to colour people. my favourite example of which being tsurugi, the highly saturated light orange dress mixed with the dark green (albiet still very saturated) green hair really icked me and still kinda does.

I think there's a deeper meaning on why the hue/saturation is so high on these panels to show you that you are on a island and It's always sunny there and hot 🤔

Tbh i don’t like any kind of colour manga. What I like about manga is how an artist can you do so much with the limited pallet that comes with monochrome.
