With the amount of southerners coming up this way these days spearing the reef, I worry about the trout populations in the shallows.

I've often thought the same. It's lucky the size & expanse of the southern barrier is so massive, it'll be a while. Plus the selectivness of spearing means less undersized is killed and less taken by sharks.

I agree with you 100%, but also think the bag limits are pretty generous on Trout

I think that the bag limits could be reduced on trout and red emp 100% l. But also think that like the comment below spearfishing is a lot more selective.
