Surprisingly those large particles fall out of the atmosphere very quickly. Still not good to breath, but not nearly as insidious to your lungs as the ultrafine soot being produced today.
@@otm646 Unfortunately the burning of coal produces sulfur dioxide which is a PM2.5 particulate pollutant IE extremely fine and this has always been true even with modern coal fired power plants. Modern cars and trucks that burn gasoline or diesel are much less polluting, but I still am not volunteering to breathe the fumes in any excess. The unfortunate reality is burning any carbon fossil fuel produces a lot of carbon dioxide which is pumped into the atmosphere and that does not settle to the ground like soot does. We know from the earths geological history that large volcanic events pumped immense amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and the most severe eruptions were associated with local or global extinction events. Burning fossil fuels was and is part of our history, a necessary step in our development, but best to curb their use as soon as we can.
in reality that real black smoke is just large particles that will fall back to the ground shortly, gasoline puts all of it into the air, where as this engine releases soot which ineveitably will just be dust

While the visual effect is the huge amount of soot, soot particles generally have a reducing effect on global warming. But at the same time, it spews out quite a lot of CO2 too from the fossil coal. With an efficiency a lot lower than that of a diesel engine, it releases probably around 5-10 times more CO2 than a diesel engine with the same power. But the point is that it's not as bad as it looks, we can ignore the soot if we only talk about global warming and the CO2 is not visible.
I really don't underatand why so many people talk about things they don't know. Does it seem bad for the environment? Oh well you won't believe me: it is! Steam engines are unbelievably inefficient, but the real problem is that they burn coal. Burn Carbon and you get CO2 (and also CO, which isn't that healthy, but let's momentarily forget about this). There's too much CO2 in the atmosphere but producing more of it is not super bad, ok. But Coal is not pure Carbon, it only contains roughly 75% carbon. Then we find some Hydrogen (5%) which, when burnt, produces water, which is a more powerful greenhouse gas if compared to CO2 but, still, not the very problem. Then there's roughly 1% nitrogen and 1% Sulphur. These guys, they are the real problems. Their oxides are toxic, plus they react in the atmosphere, producing nitric and sulphuric acids, which lead to the formation of acid rain, interfere with the formation of ozone, which is like a poison to plants, and contribute to the formation of even more particulate matter. Add the fact that you can see a whole cloud of irritating smoke, containing a lot of unburnt carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that are carcinogenic. So yes, it's pretty bad. Modern engines are waaaay better for the environment, but still they increase pollution, so just imagine what would happen if we switched back to these ancient technologies
