    Also (nothing to do with frugality) but after I quit smoking I realized how incredibly bad I smelt when I smoked. Smokers don’t realize it but you stink.

      @Jennifer Ocean The power to tax is the power to destroy however. Keep that in mind.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Jennifer Ocean I don't smoke but I am aware of a lot issues. Smoking is neutral in its financial consequences. Most smoking-related terminal illnesses are brief and the money saved in pension and dependency costs, including the expenses associated with the longer term future illnesses that never occur, are about equal.
      This is very much not true in the case of alcoholism and drug abuse. If it was only about the money, those two issues are much more significant. Both generate huge dependency costs in various form. Medical expenses. Incarceration costs. Dependency costs related to children. Only medical expenses devolve from smoking in a significant way. These come generally only later in the later in life and, as noted, are offset by decreased pension costs.
      This is the economics of the situation. Smoking is offensive and smokers sometimes engage in other behaviors characteristic of addicts, but the economic argument does not entirely wash.
      Beyond that, the idea of the government using a power it has to exercise a power it does not have is big issue worldwide. Using the power to tax, a legitimate power if exercised merely for the purpose of raising revenue, to tax something out of existence is a power I don't think governments should have.
      If you want to clean up society, just say so. If you want to install a tyranny you can say so too.

      @@anonymike8280 Tyranny? I am from the U.S.A. and that struck me as distinctly homegrown paranoia. Not funny, how an Australian was able to ID you immediately by just that word. Let's stay on point with the subject of personal frugality. :)

      @Jennifer Ocean most of the cost of a packet of smokes is tax. Smokers have paid for their health treatment many times over and some governments do more than Australia to help people quit other than just increasing the price, they provide all products to help give up smoking for free, products that Australia charges sometimes hundreds of dollars for .Also think of the pensions saved from smokers who die early. How about obese people who require many treatments such as heart attack, stroke treatment diabetes ect and need larger more expensive wheelchairs and bigger beds when they get to hospital ? What about drug addicts ? Do you resent care for all these people too ? What about alcohol related illnesses ? If the government wanted to ban smoking they would but what about the lost millions in taxes from those cigarette products ? The government doesn't want to lose out on that now does it ?

      @sherrillperez9796 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@debbiemohekey1509 Agree. Also, seems if the govt really wanted to help end smoking, they would go after the cigarette companies instead of those who become addicted to their product.

    A ‘classic’ but a goodie:
    I buy absolutely *everything* on my credit card, and pay it off in full every month. I have never paid a dime of interest, so you have to be disciplined if you’re gonna go this route. But at the end of every year I have thousands of dollars in credit card ‘points’ that I can use for a bunch of things like travel etc, but usually what I do is at the end of October I will trade in those points for gift cards, which I then use to do my Xmas shopping!
    I also save all my grocery store loyalty points throughout the year, and before I know it I have enough points for a free flight somewhere, or hundreds of dollars in gift cards to buy gas or whatever I need.
    Some people don’t bother with collecting points, but to me I see it as I’m spending the $ any way, why not be smart about it and get as much free stuff as possible in return?

    1. Eat out one meal once a month. 2. Grow your own food. If you live in an apartment and have a deck or patio, grow lettuce, peppers, all veggies in grow bags (I get mine at the Dollar Tree) fill your grow bag with potting soil, and get hoppin.' I start my seedlings in the house in styrofoam cups until they have germinated, then I put them in the grow bags when they've gotten like 4-5 inches tall. There are a ton of you tube videos teaching you how to grow seeds. I get my seeds at LittleShopOfSeeds, TH-cam him. His seeds are 55 cents a package as opposed to several dollars each at your local box store. 3. Give to a widow, orphan or the poor that you know. Even if it's a dollar or bring them food or clothes or shoes or anything or a casserole but start helping others less fortunate than yourself. Don't quit. keep giving. You will make your heart very happy and before you know it, you will be debt free and you'll find it hard to believe that when you gave to others it actually came back to you in intense abundance. I have been doing this for years and I a have a very, very happy heart I am happy to say. :)

    One of the ways that I save on groceries is planning meals for a family of 3 or for that cost $3, $5, $7, and sometimes $10 meals that are easy to prepare. An example of a $3 meal is dried beans. Walmart has a little pack of chopped ham paired with a $1 bag of beans. It makes a whole pot and there are usually leftovers for lunch.
    I use the Walmart ground beef or ground turkey at $2.50 instead of stew beef, dice up my own onion and potatoes and about 4 cans of vegetables from Aldi. Feeds 4 and leftovers for lunch. If you cook the ground beef and the ground turkey together which will cost about $6 but can be split up for 4 meals. Cooking chicken legs a pack of 8 is about $4, add in a $1 pack of broccoli and a $1 box of rice. This is a favorite.
    Use the portioned precooked turkey and beef to add to spaghetti. $1 box of noodles, a $1 can of diced canned tomatoes. Add the can tomatoes to the noodles let it sit because it will soak in then a 1.50 jar of sauce that will feed 4 for less than $5 and there are usually leftovers to take to work for lunch. I never pay more than $5 for a pack of meat no matter the type of meat. A $5 bag of frozen precooked pack of shrimp, $1 box of linguini noodles, and $2 jar of Alfredo sauce. Sauté and onion and you have a meal for 4 for less than $10, again with leftovers.
    I buy garlic Texas toast at the $ tree. There are 8 pieces and can be split into 2 meals. Kilbasa and cabbage makes a large meal for about $4. The kilbasa price at Aldi is the best price and can save about $1.50 per package compared to Walmart kilbasa. Another meal is hotdogs. $2.5 for Oscar Meyer, $1 buns or crescent rolls an Aldi box of Mack and cheese and a vegetable for around $6.
    Use the portioned ground beef and some rice that will cost about $0.25 for this meal and 6 fresh peppers, a $0.25 can of tomatoe paste and a sprinkle of cheese. Mix everything together with a sautéed onion and feed 3 or 4 people for about $6. A package of 6 Italian sausage at Aldi is about $2,50. Slice an onion and cut the sausage length wise. Put the onion on the sheet pan and lay the sausage on top of the onion and bake. The onion will cook, the grease will be less than if you cooked it without slicing, add a $1 bag of tater tots or frenchfries and a side of $1 vegetables and a $1 pack of hotdog buns a great meal for 4 at a very low price. You can usually get a VERY LARGE Boston butt on sale for 1/3 the price at Food lion. I pick the $5 or less pork. Cook in the crockpot and divide it up for 4 or 5 meals of bbq sandwiches at the cost of $1 per meal. A $1 pack of buns and some premade coleslaw for $1.50 and a side of $1 vegetables. 4 meals at less than $5 each for 4 people. Using another proportioned frozen cooked turkey beef to make chili. You can make a larger pot of chili using Aldi ingredients for $5 to feed four and have lunch leftovers. Scrambled eggs and turkey bacon with biscuits is another $3 meal. Buying a bag of frozen biscuits so that you can cook only as many as needed so there is no wasting compared to a can of 8 that probably won’t get used.
    Cook a dozen eggs and you have 6 breakfast meals for $2. Which brings me to egg salad. You can serve egg salad wraps with a pickle and chips for another quick $3 meal. Tacos are cost effective. Chicken thighs with yellow rice and black beans will provide a weeks worth of lunch that you can take to work and eat on all week for $2 or less per day.
    There are so many options!

    Use half the amount of laundry detergent...your clothes will come out just as clean. Same with coffee...you can use less than the recommended amount without losing the flavor. If you periodically like to bake, keep powdered milk and powdered buttermilk in your pantry...the shelf life is amazing. I even use powdered peanut butter for cookies! Grocery shopping online for pickup saves you so much as you can first look in your fridge and/or pantry to see what you really need for your meal plan (and if you don't already meal plan, start!). You also are not tempted by the "shiny object" on the end cap in the store. Use an app like Flipp to see what's on sale at the stores you shop at and meal plan around those sales. Grocery shop twice a month instead of weekly...properly stored produce will easily last that long. If a month has five weeks, use that last week to use up what's in the fridge instead of buying more. TH-cam and other internet sites are great resources for low budget cooking ideas to use up what you have on hand.

This has meant getting a Business class seat for 1/2 the cost. Also travelling off season, but close to the season saves a lot on hotel bills. We also only eat twice a day, stopping for coffee in the afternoon. Being frugal is great, but it shouldn't mean compromising quality. Lately, because I fell and am recovering, I have done Walmart's free grocery pick up. It has saved me money because I am shopping online and not being tempted by all of the other things in the store. By the way, I own my new build home outright, 2 cars, retirement in place, 3 year emergency fund in place, and am 100% debt free, and go over my finances daily, I use my credit card, especially for large purchases, and pay it off for the points. Thanks for sharing ❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗

We disagree, i would rather spend less on the kids and as a result work less and my children can spend more time with me! Also kids dont need much if you make them aware of the value of money and the power of advertising to make you want stuff! My kids are pretty savvy.

    When you declutter do it room by room. Think of this as a first round or first pass. Then choose a room to do a DETAILED declutter, one room a month. One area of that room at a time. GIVE YOURSELF the time to do a thorough job. Thoughtful decisions. This is the base of Simplifying and paring down. More space, more homes for your stuff, cleared off surfaces, easier cleaning and maintenance are the rewards. Also you will find things you never knew you had, don’t need, can pass along to others. Keeping things in your space simplified will help you rethink your spending on “stuff” 😉 This declutter process will become a way of life and spill over into all the areas of your life.

    Love your videos Jennifer! I live in New Zealand so some of these extra ideas may not be possible everywhere but...1. Plant some herbs and vegetables whether in pots, raised beds, or the garden. Also make use of any local food forest, foraging maps, or join the local community garden club to access some growing space if you have none at home. Growing from seed or cuttings is generally cheaper than buying nursery plants, and it's an activity that is also good for your wellbeing in so many different ways. Our local library has a freely accessible seed bank that is just an old school desk painted and repurposed for community seed swopping. 2. Or join a fruit and vege co-operative where for about NZD$15 you'll get two large bags of seasonal produce weekly (or less regularly if preferred) - often offered by church organisations or social enterprise groups. Or create your own co-op with friends, family or neighbours where you each grow different vegetables you can each respectively manage in your available space and swop their excess for yours. Swops could be organised via social media for your co-op group or I have neighbours who put surplus seasonal fruit in a box at their gate with a 'help yourself for free' sign for those walking by. 3. No matter what your age check out the wide range of menstrual products available on the market now. Many disposable items are expensive and the cost (and waste being sent to landfill) over decades adds up massively! I have shifted to using cloth, washable pads and liners and am very happy with the job they do, but am especially happy I am saving so much money every month! You can get extra absorbent versions for heavy periods and/or minor to moderate incontinence issues too. Sewing your own may be an option and there are a lot of TH-cam videos on how to do this. 4. Finally, an adaptation of what my Nana did during the Depression to clothe her children... If you are into sewing or craft, new fabric and haberdashery can be quite expensive. Try your local thrift /second-hand / pre-loved shop for the items you want or could stock up on that others have got rid of. Alternatively, at the same shops buy clothes, pre-loved furnishings or linen made of fabric that could be repurposed to your project, or that may be at dirt cheap prices due to stains etc. but still has great buttons or good working zips that could be removed and used in another project. Also monitor local online sales noticeboards for people getting rid of bulk lots of vintage sewing notions etc. cheaply when clearing deceased estates.

I also buy the larger jugs of all purpose cleaner. For laundry detergent I buy Cosco brand Kirkland much cheaper......I also have stopped using so much paper towels and now use reusable microfiber cloths to clean the bathroom, the microfiber cloths are also great to put on a swiffer to use clean the floor. Our electric bill went way down after we put everything on plug strips, even the over-the-stove microwave. Many things use phantom power when they are turned off. We seldom watch TV so we unplugged that, too. We use lots of fans in the summer and only turn the A/C on manually for short times unless it's over 100 in the high desert. I use big buckets in the kitchen and shower to fill while waiting for the water to get hot. Then I set them by the washer to add to a load. It's amazing how much water it takes to wash clothes. Use my solar dryer (clothesline) as often as possible. Clothes last MUCH longer if you don't put them in the dryer (what do you think all that lint is?). I wear clothes more than once unless I happen to get very sweaty. When I drive, I accelerate slowly and anticipate stops to save on gas. I drive a 5 speed and coast whenever possible, on slight hills and coast up to a stop light. I've gotten up to 58 MPG in my economy car (normal for that car would be around 35 MPG). We have two old vehicles so I only carry liability and instead of paying for coverage that would replace our cars, I put extra money into a budget category to save up for car repairs and replacements. If my car was considered totaled and I was at fault, I will have the cash to replace it. If I have no accidents, I will have even more in the bank. I take advantage of senior discounts at stores when I need to shop.

    Love your tips and tricks! I know someone who stopped smoking and used to money to buy a car! One thing i do to save: i have a weekly budget for groceries and if i am under my budet, i ‘’roll over’’ the difference to a savings account

    For car insurance (this is Australia but I assume applies to USA too?) where you live can impact the price of your car insurance.
    I live in a rough area so if I list my car as here the insurance goes up in price (because it's more likely to be stolen). SO i put my address at my parent's place which is in the countryside and it drops my insurance price by like $200.
    So if you have a friend or family member who lives in a safer neighbourhood or in the countryside, ask them if you can list their address for car insurance. All it means for them is that they might get random mail from the company with your name on it.

    I go to the wand car wash. Put in $1. Spray truck with soapy water. I count the seconds so I can get around the truck before the machine quits. Then use the brush on the truck, no added soap as there is enough on my old rusty truck so that part is free. Put in $1 and rinse, counting again. Put in another $1 and rinse again. I discovered that I get more time with 2 loonies than with 1 toonie. Squeegy off the windows, dry them if needed, buff fenders. There you go, I just washed my 2004 Chev Siverado for $3. Car wash owner hates me.

      Not only is it the load music, but it’s hearing your favorite music from your childhood/teenage years being played at the grocery store!

    We have so much really nice furniture that we found on the curb. Why someone would discard a nice dining set or a really good looking rocking chair with cushions or a beautiful dresser made of carved fruit wood is beyond my understanding. My brother found everything from nice leather couches to crystal chandeliers in the trash. Finally he had so much, he had to stop picking things up.
