I like your seemingly random approach to your videos. One never knows whether one is to take a gentle stroll down an English country lane or to, instead, dive into deep time! Of course, I will spread word of your show as much as I can. It is refreshing to see how a thinking person perceives the world (as opposed to those with closed minds).
Wonderful content as always. Thanks. Early in the video you say that you weren't planning on making a video. Then you proceed to grace us with a delightful and enraging lesson on the man who invented time - with appropriate waffles. I'm not sure which is more impressive - that you have all of these facts, concepts and ideas in your head, or that you can bring them all together (without having planned to shoot a video) into an engaging and informative video. You are a gem 🎉
Truly fascinating. Please feel free to waffle on like that at any time. Even when you tell us about things I already "know about," I learn details I wasn't aware of. Thank you!
Fascinating! And somewhat charming that you used the more traditional Long Scale use of "billion" as a million million rather than the newer and more common Short Scale use as a thousand million.
Great storytelling, very interesting, geology is an interesting subject. (As a Dane, I have to mention that Niels Steensen isn't Dutch but Danish). The English physicist Julian Barbour suggests that time does not exist, but was invented by humans to describe the movement of matter in space. Merry Christmas!
Wow!! Wayne thank you so much!! I really needed this today!! I just got home from work!! Merry Christmas and happy New Year’s my friend be well!!👍🏿💯❤️🎉🎉🎊🎊
Unfortunately, "time is a progression from past to future" is a circular definition. The notions of "past" and "future" _assume_ the existence of time already, otherwise how do you define them? 😺
I took both of my daughters to Siccar Point on New Years Day 2014 and explained how it was as important as the 'Origin of Species' to our understanding of the world. They sort of couldn't really get how famous and important it was because there wasn't a gift shop ... and it just reinforced that they've got a weird Dad. They were brought up to understand Religion (they were both altar servers at the time) but to trust in Science.
Great video 🙂. My partner has a degree in Geology so this brought back memories for her. She's visited and studied the Hutton's Unconformity at the Isle of Arran.
We have memories, and we can remember some events that happened before other events. We quantify the number of events filling the gap and call it 'time' so we can agree the size of the gap between ourselves.
Time, in my opinion ,is a measure of things happening. If nothing, literally nothing happens, there's no time to talk about. SI definition of a second as a time between two things occuring, namely caesium frequency.
I never knew there were two Huttons Unconformities! I've visited the one at Lochranza on Arran, didn't realise there was a mainland site with the same name
Love watching a video on this Channel on Xmas day!!! 🎉❤ Excellent topic. What a place to make a video!!!! I love it there....😊 Merry Christmas to you and yours. ❤ All the best for 2025....❤❤
Beautiful. On my bucket list to visit. These earlier pioneering geologists invented uniformitarianism and the then obvious deep time recorded in the stratigraphy you wandered about on. The rest is history eh? Wonderful discussion.
Now it's Christmas so I remember what I did last year. I can visualize what happened long before that, but it stops when I get to the birth of Jesus. Merry Christmas.
Can't exactly call this a waffle since there was no navigation content presumed. This makes me feel kind of lost, time to start striking nails and reading cow pies.
Happy Christmas 2024 was very educational and very enjoyable.. Looking forward to watching your videos in 2025 Really looking forward to the waffle in the coming years.
Entropy disqualified 😑 ok, time is the knowledge that I'll have to change another diaper on the toddler that will try and maintain the exact opposite position on the other side of the sofa at some point after right now...
Umm. Makes your brain hurt, is right. (& that’s before the ‘festivities’!) I don’t get how the material that is washed off, ends up on top of the rock being washed?? Is that where Sisyphus comes in?? Anyway, happy Christmas, and new year, from the other side of the Forth.
You are a natural storyteller with a talent for keeping us engaged and fascinated.

Merry Christmas, great videos, great channel, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, God Bless you
As a geologist, I approve this (slightly long winded but well explained) message 😊
This place has long been on my list of places to visit
Very good video. And Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Merry Christmas, Wayne 🎄and much thanks for another cracking video..
"If English isn't your first language..." - goes on to explain something I don't know, even though English is my first language
most native english speakers won't know it. would have made more sense to say "if you haven't studied greek mythology"

Brilliant! Thanks for another entertaining ramble! Merry Christmas

Time for a cuppa tea.
Totally agree
Fascinating! And somewhat charming that you used the more traditional Long Scale use of "billion" as a million million rather than the newer and more common Short Scale use as a thousand million.
when it comes to navigation, John Harrison is the man who invented time!!!!
Well done. A very difficult topic…well, two difficult topics - time & geology. A merry Christmas to you and yours.
Another great one! 🧇🧇🧇

Merry Christmas!
I like the Barbour explanation. Time is the n+1th dimension observed by inhabitants of the nth dimension
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Another interesting video, well done.

Thank you for the great Christmas present... your story.
Great video thanks killing time here Xmas morning.
I now have a name for the relentless pile of laundry at my house!
Thank you for this fantastic explanation of deep time 😊

Inconceivable!
It's Christmas time. Happy Christmas.
I disagree with some of your conclusions- but that was a both delightful and unexpected engagement of your thoughts. Cheers from America.
There are waffles. There are Belgian waffles. And now we have a Scottish waffle. Great story. Your videos are always a treat. Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas
If you are still in the area Edin's Hall Broch is nearby and worth a visit
Thank you for assuming I can remember last week. 😊

A waffle within a waffle within a waffle. I can never get tired of listening to them.

Well that was interesting... but... err... where is the complement video to enhance our map reading skills? Hehehehe!

The future will never be what it was.
How very odd. Only 60 minutes ago I watched Tom Scott's video at this very place! Universe likes to throw up coincidences to amuse us.
Indeed, such oddities abound. I had never heard of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon until yesterday and now it's popping up everywhere!

thank you for a really great Christman waffle

Brilliant and fascinating waffle, Wayne, looking forward to lots more in 2025!
👍 Your videos are really interesting and good, even what you call waffle. 😀

Then the working World invented Overtime.
Then the Government invented taxes to erode your time allotted.
Cheers! Deep Pain Time !
Merry Wafflemass. All the best for 2025. Here's looking forward to more outdoor adventures.
