While she was doing my hair, I was not facing a mirror, but felt a consistent pull while she was doing each lock. I didn't think anything of it; I just assumed she was heavy-handed. This video was SPOT ON! I started my locs 6 months ago with two strand twists and have been maintaining them using the interlock method. I recently noticed a lot of short hairs around my locs and decided to visit to a new locitian who confirmed my fears--I had breakage!!! This new loctician told me that I was getting my hair interlocked too often (the previous locitian advised me to come in every 4-5 weeks since my hair was in the starter loc phase). She (the new loctician) explained that I could get my hair palm rolled to allow the broken hairs to grow in and that I could switch between the two methods , very similar to what you explained in the video. Needless to say I’m very happy I followed my instinct and went to a new loctician. Now that I have experience with both methods, I’ve decided that I will stick to palm rolling moving forward. Fatima Manneh I am glad to hear that 3 years in you are still hydrating your scalp and locs and oiling your scalp throughout the week. I’m only 3 months in and that is my routine too. It seems some YT channels have a problem with this type of routine and they caution about using too much water and too much oil. I think this journey is a matter of finding what works for your hair and doing that. I’m a newbie and have had no issues with lint or product buildup or breakage. Courtney has been a source of good information for me. I’m loving the freedom locs give me and interlocking is part of that freedom for me. I have tried re twisting but even tied under a scarf and bonnet my retwists came undone. I think it’s too much tension to keep re twisting the same loc week after week so I interlock.
Great information on interlocking! I’ve started recommending crochet maintentence over interlocking for 99% of my clients that have issues with frizz. Crochet doesn’t thin out the locs or make them skinny. Controls frizz, lasts months. Best of both worlds.
I started my locs with two strand twists and have been interlocking them myself over the last couple years. I mostly like it. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken/would take my hair to lock with coils. I only do my hair maybe 4x a year. Thanks for making this video. Maybe I’ll try switching it up here and there and coil in between.
This is such great knowledge. My stylist is interlocking my hair without offering healthy hair information. I am in love with my locs now that I have found you. You are saving my journey. I am grateful for you! The outro was it!
Thanks so much for this valuable information! I always wanted locs, but hated the “scalpy” look I often saw. I now realize that comes from interlocking. My hair is also too fragile for interlocking. I actually love the frizzy look. Your videos are really helping me with my research and decisions. Going to follow you on Instagram. Thank you!
I'm so happy to see your comment. I thought I was the only one who didn't like the scalpy/perfect loc look. I just started my locs with 2 strand twists yesterday. I plan to palm roll maybe 2x per year. I'm definitely going to try to do semi freeform. 😊
This is probably THE BEST video I've every seen on interlocking! So helpful to hear that you can do both. My scalp gets terrible every once in a while so the thought of only palm rolling sucks...but I don't want my locs stupid thin. Thank you for this.
Thanks for this video. I started my locs in Dec 2021 with two-strand twists. My original loctician took a break so i had to go somewhere else. After a little research i decided to interlock on my second retwist and initially loved it cause I could wash and didn't have to worry about doing anything extra. I went back to my original location for a retwist and she said the interlocking caused my hair to grow tangled and there were some spots where my hair broke off. Also, many stands of hair were just loose and not attracted to anything. She palm rolled to not cause further damage and said it woukd also keep my grays somewhat growing with the loc. I like the ease of care with interlocking. I was very frustrated after my hair appointment cause I hate retwisting myself after every other wash. I may alternate or just interlock 1-2 times a year. I really appreciate the guidance.
I am getting ready to start my loc journey and was wondering about this and am so glad I came across this as I was very concern about this. Thanks for the knowledge!
I think my dreads are wayyy too thick for interlocking. I have palmed rolled for 8 years but recently started getting a style with my palm roll and it lasts a lot longer. I’m also very tender headed so after reading and watching multiple videos, especially this 1, I am certain that interlocking is not for me. I was intentional about the size and variation of my locs, though not free form. This video is the most informative of them all! Having a stylist that keeps it 💯 is key.
Thank you for this video. I just combed out my locs of 13 yrs and will start a new journey at some point. I heard about interlocking and I appreciate your educational video so I can make an informed decision.
I wish I could find a loctician that would explain things to me. I go to a salon dedicated strictly to doing locs…it’s been 6 months and no one ever explains anything. I have soft 3c hair & I really was looking for a lot more information. Thank you for this video!!!
If you have soft hair crochet them in with a small crochet needle works great with soft hair mines like 1c and 2a texture I had to crochet them. Also cause I have to wash my scalp I can't do months of no washing and tons of products ... With crochet locs I can wash my head all the time
Thank you so much for the information on interlocking. I saw a loctician yesterday and that's what she wanted to do to my hair with no explanation. I didnt have a choice in it. Not today not ever...I have 3b hair.
I walk outside 4-5 miles a day 5x weekly. I sweat in my head I have done 1 retwist since I interlocked January 1st. In order for me to love this journey I cannot palm roll
Thank you for for video ..I just recently interlocked my hair due to being pregnant. I have a 4c hair type and this video was very informative.. I'll definitely be palm rolling after my locs grow out more .
Thank you for this video 😊 Before I start my locs, I want to ask for your advice on starting locs with the interlocking method and maintaining using the palm rolling method. I exercise, so I would like to avoid frequent manipulation as much as possible in the beginning stages. Thank you!
i started my locs freeform and after 4 years got maintained by a friend who did interlocking. i always disliked the way my hair and scalp looked after maintenance, and did not like the tightness of the locs after she worked on them. because my dreads were completely freeform for many years I was ignorant to the various methods available and wish I had never had them interlocked. I am currently looking for a new loctician so I can try to move on from what had already occurred with my hair. thank you for your unbiased description of how and why we use the different techniques.
I tried interlocking early in my journey maybe twice then decided to just not retwist at all. 5 years later, those spots where i interlocked started to thin above the interlocked area. I just decided to cut it off. Interlocking is definitely not for everyone.
With menopause I sweat.I have very fine hair and im at two months locd my hair grows away from my locs it works for me i love the look and feel of it this is my second set so i know know my hair type wont produce thick locs im fine with that, im a stylist as well so i know how to moisturize and hydrate good tips queen
Great video. You talked about what I have been thinking for a while. Thank you since I have been interlocking for almost 2years I will try the palm rolling method when it's time.
Great video. I use both methods I let my loctician palm roll every 6 to 8 weeks once it unravels I interlock and leave it alone when its time for my appointment she palm rolls. She monitoring them so far she says there doing ok. Soon ill be stretching it to 10 weeks for maintenance but im thankful i have someone good thats keeping track.
As a Muslim we have to wash our hair quite a lot so after I did coils as stater they was not staying … but I used the needle to mesh the ends then interlocked and now it’s perfect and I do it like every 6 weeks plus
Thanks for this. You answered all the questions I had. I just wanted to interlock for the month of may because I have multiple events to attend expanding from the first week of may to the last week & i refuse to twist my hair more than once a month.
Ideally i was looking for a quick demo of how to start and keep locs, but i appreciate your explanations. This was worth watching every minute, thanks. Obvi not for white hair, but all this makes sense for my bro and is helpful ty❤
Several months ago I began twisting, i.e., palm rolling in the new growth that grows outside the loc, the sew in that part of the loc. As the new growth locs in, the thread can later be removed. I use to have my hair interlocked, but as you said, those locs are slimmer. Therefore, I stopped interlocking.
I got permanent loc extensions last November & boy oh boy I’ve been struggling. My extensions keep falling out & my retwist do not last. I don’t wash my own hair, I don’t use cream base conditioners or moisturizers ( I don’t condition my hair at all bc she said not to bc my hair is supposed to be a little hard) & might oil my scalp once a week. The amount of hair that’s come out of locs is ridiculous. The locs by My nape & by my ears are super thin at the root. I’ve actually combined some hairs on my own to strengthen the loc & root. I’m glad I found this video bc I’m taking control of maintaining my own locs from now on & I think interlocking will be my best bet.
I’m going through the same thing. What’s worse is that I dyed six my locs so it makes it hard for my hairstylist to repair. I prefer interlocking because my hair can grow and stay neat until my next session
Thanks for this video and it’s content! Wish I had known this info before I started interlocking my 10 years locs about 4 years ago. I loved the convenience of it raising 4 kids and getting lazy with my own hair while keeping theirs healthy but never made the connection with the thinning from the root and loc. This was my second set of locs ( the first set were thick for 20 years which I maintained on my own by palm rolling) I know age may contribute some but not to this extent. I’m free styling now and serious about my moisturizing like I used to be hoping to get my thickness back. If no recovery in a year I will cut my below waist locs off Continued blessings 🌸
I appreciate your video. I have medium sized locs and recently decided to add one more small loc near my edges (too much hair to lay lol). This is probably my third attempt starting it with a two strand twist due to it unraveling during wash day. 🤦🏽♀️ I will try the interlocking method for this loc along with palm rolling as it matures.
Hey Courtney, lovely to see you looking so well🙏🏽Because of you, I now have the tools to keep my baby locs conditioned between my 4 week trips to my loctition. Just had my first retwist and was a little disappointed to see, how rough it was looking, a few days later. My Loctition, didn’t really speak to me, apart from telling me, not to get it wet n to oil my scalp regularly with carrot oil. I’ve since followed some of your advice(I can’t find your brand in my country, the UK) but have blended my own concoction using , sweet almond, tee tree & peppermint oils. Thank you so much for sharing. I also got the rose water to hydrate my scalp. Once again. Thank you for the video, I’ve never heard of interlocking…it seems I’ve still got a lot to learn. I love it that you explain a lot, personally I appreciate that. Keep these videos coming pl, we need you. ONE LOVE🙏🏽

Thank you for this very valuable information I have started a dreadlock journey for the second time and I had my hair Palm rolled the first time I want to try interlocking this time
Such an informative video! Thank you! Is it possible to go between interlocking and palm rolling on Sisterlocks? I’ve seen some of the ladies converting to palm rolling and was considering it because I noticed my hair is fine in the crown of my head and I believe the interlocking has weakened my crown. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! ❤
Can one START with interlocks and then just maintain the locs with palm rolling? I have fine low density hair and the woman who did my starters started them out with interlocks (which I didn’t really want- but due to my texture she thought it was best 😣). But I know I don’t want really thin locs, and I personally feel like interlocking is too tight 😅.
If you have type 3 hair as a woman and want the smaller loc look. Interlocking and palm rolling will be the best maintenance method. The women in my family all prefer latch hook for sure.
Not only that but it’s if you have a dry scalp or oily. Just like our skin and washing it a lot has a lot to do with drying out the hair faster, it strips away your natural oils.
Hi Courtney, Love your channel. I researched locking methods and watched Loc journeys for years before finally starting mine on July 30 of this year. I am oiling my scalp 2X a week (Wild Growth Oil) and spritzing it daily with a mixture of Rose Water, Vitamin E Oil and a few drops of Peppermint Oil. I wash it once a month, I just washed it Saturday and I am having it retightened every 3 months. No styles and I sleep in a Satin Bonnet. I would love your opinion regarding whether or not I am doing anything wrong. Thank you
I’m 3 years locked and tried this and my hair hasn’t been the same since. My locs feel thinner..and I feel like the natural flow of you’re hair is disrupted doing this method.
I started my locks palm roll and me personally I have notices that my hair which was thicker when I started them has started thinning out from palm rolling so thinning can happen either method but that's my experience
As someone with locs and do loc maintenance for others this interlocking method looks very interesting but what I want to know is does it leave any holes in the locs when it grows? Apart from that it looks very neat and well done I will try it out on myself and with my clients thanks
Can you do both? Palm rolling if you can’t interlock but then interlocking? Interlocking takes such a long time 😢 but palm rolling doesn’t last past the wash.
Thanks for sharing this hair care tutorial on interlocking. For my hair I am using Shea Moisture strengthen and restore smoothie for my locks. I have started this journey in March of this year. I keep mine for 8 to 10 weeks before going to the loctician.
Ive neen interlocking 10yrs now and 2 point rotation is not as tight as 4 point. When i did 4 point my locs were tighter snd smaller, but with 2 point they are not as tight as fuller.
Oils are a sealant, you have to put moisture on your locs before adding oil to your locs (oil to your scalp directly is different). You can spread rose water/rose water + glycerin mix, any water based spray conditioner are a few options you can try to add to your locs… this was a point she made at the very end of her video too👀 hydrate then sealing
Hi what products for moisturizer and oil base. I use essential oils in my Cantù shea butter shampoo. I loved your video on interlocking, I had it interlocked two weeks ago. My stylist told me to return in three months, your thoughts. Thank you for your time. Mrs. Anderson
Thank you! This was a GREAT video! PLEASE! I would really appreciate some help! I have always done my own hair; my texture is 3C-4A. I never had issues. I had my hair interlocked by suggestion from a stylist, not really knowing what it was. I thought it was crocheting with additional hair to beef up my thinner locs. As a result, my hair improperly interlocked about 4 weeks ago. I am used to only palm rolling and free forming. I hate interlocking and want to NEVER do this again.

I really appreciate this content. Open honest, and real is what we need more of.
Twist the roots only not the entire shaft of the loc
My pleasure! thanks for watching 💗
I am getting ready to start my loc journey and was wondering about this and am so glad I came across this as I was very concern about this. Thanks for the knowledge!
My pleasure!
Thank you so much! Glad the video was helpful! 🫶🏾💚
i only interlocked the ones that would unravel & im now at 6 months and they are flourishing & they’re not coming loose🥰
With crochet locs I can wash my head all the time
Agreed ‼️
Thank you so much for the information on interlocking. I saw a loctician yesterday and that's what she wanted to do to my hair with no explanation. I didnt have a choice in it. Not today not ever...I have 3b hair.
I walk outside 4-5 miles a day 5x weekly. I sweat in my head I have done 1 retwist since I interlocked January 1st. In order for me to love this journey I cannot palm roll
Lol Courtney that end blooper was too darn cute ;) you are a blessing, thank you for the information.
I like the idea of going back and forth with interlocking 4 times a yea and palm rolling other times
PRECIATE YOU ❤❤❤ bc I want to interlock on my next retwist but I want to palm roll on the rest & you answered that for me
My pleasure!! I’m just curious.. Why do you want to interlock?
That’s so good! Seems like you’re on the right track 🙏🏾 keep it up!
Best info I’ve ever got from locs, interlocks especially, thank you so much
Keiran🙏🏾❤️
Ideally i was looking for a quick demo of how to start and keep locs, but i appreciate your explanations. This was worth watching every minute, thanks. Obvi not for white hair, but all this makes sense for my bro and is helpful ty❤
Several months ago I began twisting, i.e., palm rolling in the new growth that grows outside the loc, the sew in that part of the loc. As the new growth locs in, the thread can later be removed. I use to have my hair interlocked, but as you said, those locs are slimmer. Therefore, I stopped interlocking.
how long were you interlocked for
I got permanent loc extensions last November & boy oh boy I’ve been struggling.
If no recovery in a year I will cut my below waist locs off
Continued blessings 🌸
Don’t they get thinner as they grow longer?
I appreciate your video. I have medium sized locs and recently decided to add one more small loc near my edges (too much hair to lay lol). This is probably my third attempt starting it with a two strand twist due to it unraveling during wash day. 🤦🏽♀️ I will try the interlocking method for this loc along with palm rolling as it matures.
Thank you for this info, definitely a different painted picture...my Dreads are crazy (the Roots) and never to much info thank you thanks you ....:)
Glad it was helpful!
ONE LOVE🙏🏽
Ahhh this means SO much to hear all of this. Comments like this keep me filming and uploading. I’m so happy you get value and that you’ve found a hair care regimen that works for you. It is really my pleasure to share my knowledge and I will definitely keep them coming ♥️
You have really gorgeous features and a great aesthetic. Love that tattoo placement too! Thanks for the info ❤
im so excited about your loc journey
You are so down to earth, and knowledgeable❤
Thank you this is great 😊information. I’m on my 5 month journey.
Keeping it so real! Thank you!!! You helped a lot- I’m about to start my loc journey! Pray for me 🙏🏾
It’s my pleasure! Good luck to you on the journey!
The outro 🙌🏾... keep celebrating you! Great video 💚
Thank you for pointing that out! I went back to watch and it was a great reminder to do just that. ♥️
Thank you for answering my question..I am palm rolled ..but I will go back and forth a few times a year...
I’ve made the decision to maintain my starter locs (myself) with interlocking and this was very helpful.
This video was exactly what I needed!
Thank you for this very valuable information I have started a dreadlock journey for the second time and I had my hair Palm rolled the first time I want to try interlocking this time
Glad it was helpful!
I’m going to start interlocking my nape only because my palm roll doesn’t last on that row. Thank you for all this info 💕
Thank you for the much needed information.
This was the most informative video I've seen so far, that you, sis! Def following you on Instagram immediately!
Yay! Thank you! Glad it could help
Yes you can switch to palm roll!
If you have type 3 hair as a woman and want the smaller loc look. Interlocking and palm rolling will be the best maintenance method. The women in my family all prefer latch hook for sure.
I like her. Very informative. My single loc is thinning through interlock. Need to change up.
....also I heard interlocking is not true dreads because u can take them out, even after years of interlocking.
Thank you that was very informative, and helpful as I am starting my interlocking journey ❤👍🏾
thank you for this thinking about getting micro loc next week
Thank you. Very informative. Thank you. I do have fine
Locs so this was very helpful. Thank you
My loctician is the best! Searching if going to try interlocking
Thank you
Great advice. I'm planning on interlocking my hair very soon.
I’m 3 years locked and tried this and my hair hasn’t been the same since. My locs feel thinner..and I feel like the natural flow of you’re hair is disrupted doing this method.
Palm roll clients come back every four weeks? That is way too soon
I started my locks palm roll and me personally I have notices that my hair which was thicker when I started them has started thinning out from palm rolling so thinning can happen either method but that's my experience
There is most likely another factor that’s causing the thinning. If palm roll is done properly, it won’t cause thinning.
Wow. Thank you so very much for your candor, expertise and honesty.
My pleasure!
What is the best method for maintaining new growth with comb coils if I don't want to keep getting my hair retwisted with a loctician?
You’ll have to retwist it yourself I suppose
As someone with locs and do loc maintenance for others this interlocking method looks very interesting but what I want to know is does it leave any holes in the locs when it grows? Apart from that it looks very neat and well done I will try it out on myself and with my clients thanks
It doesn’t leave holes if done correctly. I’ll be sharing a video on how to avoid holes!
Can you do both? Palm rolling if you can’t interlock but then interlocking? Interlocking takes such a long time 😢 but palm rolling doesn’t last past the wash.
Yup! Some ppl alternate
LOVE the education of our culture and, this channel GIVES; new subbie! 🎯💫💯
Thanks for subbing and for the kind words! 🥰
Can you please do a video on what products to use to moisturise your locs, as oils alone dry my hair and scalp out
I use house of isis products and my hair / scalp is pretty healthy. I'm like a year and change into my loc journey through interlocking.
Hair & scalp might be dry because you don’t drink enough water everyday 6 to 8 cups is needed everyday
Thank you for this detailed information. This was thorough and honest.
Is interlocking more expensive than other approaches?
I thought about interlocking method but I don't want to but I do love the sister loc look . I sweat in my Head the most
Ur terrific!! Hope to schedule w u when I’m in VA
This was very informative, and just what I needed. Thank you 😊
You are awesome... I have been going back and forth with this and was so scared to combine both methods and this helped so much... Hydration is key ❤
Excellent video, Courtney! Thanks for sharing!😁
It’s my pleasure!
Hi what products for moisturizer and oil base. I use essential oils in my Cantù shea butter shampoo.
I loved your video on interlocking, I had it interlocked two weeks ago. My stylist told me to return in three months, your thoughts.
Thank you for your time.
Mrs. Anderson
Thanks for the information 😊
You’re welcome! I hope it helps! 😊
Sorry that happened to you. Just allow about 6-8 weeks after interlocking and switch over to palm roll again!
Yessss I have very fine hair and I noticed some of my interlocked hair broke off
Sorry to hear that, yes it can really be too much tension for some of us!
Thanks Courtney you came across as very real.
Thank you so much for this! Now I understand. You’re awesome!
Great informative video! Thank you Courtney!
You are so welcome!
I want to start locs but I workout a lot and sweat in my hair. Idk what to do!
Do you have any videos on daily maintenance for dreads
