An EXCELLENT book on the Mustang is "Building The P51 Mustang" by Michael O'Leary. I have read it several times, soo very informative, and some things I didn't know, like 491mph for the "F" model. All these years I read fastest war Mustang was the "H" at 487mph!
The XP-51F was a prototype that never went into production, and had no guns. You can't really compare the performance with a production airplane with armor and armament and drop tank shackles, etc.
@@barryervin8536 :Well Barry, the F15 and others that did speed, and rate to climb records were STRIPPED of ALL non esentual equipment, guns, paint and others, and by the way, just barely enough fuel to do the test. So THEY are not combat ready either!
Despite building outdated P-40s under license for RAF, North American Aviation proposed a better plane P-51A using P-40’s engine. Germany born chief designer (some said who worked for Messerschmitt before he came to the US) designed both P-51A and F-86. P-51A looked similar to BF-109 that confused both alliances and German pilots and crews.
SK Schmued NEVER worked for Meserschmidt, he left German with his parents when he was young !!!! And He was NOT an engineer but a designer, he drew the plans !!! Kindelberger was the engineer and responsible for the Mustang, that was his baby !!!!
SK North American NEVER built a single P40 for the Brits !!! Where the hell do you get that info ????? Dutch Kindelberger refused to tool up to build an obsolete plane and offered HIS design he had been working on !!! Why it only took 112 days to build the first one !!! DUUUUUHH!!!!!
The "A" had the Allison, no supercharger or turbocharger which made the cowling smaller and tighter. As far as the "D" compared to the "H", the "H" was THE ultimate Mustang, all stops were pulled, maximum streamlining was applied AND "Water/Alcohol Injection" was used to up performance, which is why the "H" was THE fastest production Mustang at a top speed of 487mph! The fastest recorded mustang was the "F" model, top speed in testing was 491mph. That was because NA was trying to be first to 500mph, competing with Republic. The "H" never saw WWII service as the war ended, and didn't serve in Korea either.
Glen Falzo Who the hell told you the A Allison Mustang did not have a supercharger ????WTF ????? ALL Allisons has a large single stage mechanical supercharger........the P38 added a turbo to feed the mechanical supercharger on each engine !!! Facts of history NOT lies, hype or Bullshit !!! The single stage Allison actually had a larger compressor wheel on its supercharger than the merlins !!! Why it kicked the shitfires MkV ass below 20,000 FT 40 MPH faster !!! Re Get your shit together !!!Realize too the merlin used 3 different superchargers, a single stage, up to the Mk XX (20) and on nthe Mk XX they added a second speed, and on the 60 series later production they had a 2 stage 2 speed supercharger which was the high altitude engine. of which the Brits like to slobber and drool over and "TRY" to assign ALL merlins the power and altitude of the 60 series merlins !!!!

I would have liked to see what the F-8F Bearcat could have done if it had saw action in the Pacific.I have read that aircraft had the fastest climb rate ever recorded by a prop aircraft.
Of course the A model had a supercharger. All WW2 combat aircraft (transport planes too) had superchargers of some sort. The Allison engine supercharger just wasn't a very effective one.
I have pictures of my dad, in the First Air Commandos, with P51A's.
The A model actually looks more like the H model than the D does...

Those weren't even Mustangs at all.. they were P98-c/type 2 and type 3 prototypes for hollywood movies, for crying out loud. Jeez

Edgar Schmued left Germany in 1925, before the Messerschmitt company existed.
