I remember playing Panther in the 80s. The music in it was awesome.
TV sets with Ataris and then ZX speccys were all over USSR. It was like arcades. You pay for 5-10 minutes and play.
River Raid and Monty was most played, International Karate - most played for 2 players.
Star Raiders 2 - when you had to hit space button and fly to the sun to fuel but had to leave soon enough not to be melted.
in 2000s I bought Atari and couldn't get enough of River Raid. It is really great.
Zybex, Draconus and Ninja Commando were Zeppelin Games masterpieces. Last level of Ninja Commando was killing me.
Zybex was my favorite game ever for a long time.
Dan Strikes back is a great game, also played it alot in 2000s.
Zorro was the quest - we were played it back in 80s.
    Karateka was stunning visually.
Spy vs Spy was an often 2-player game people played but I never played it.
Caverns of Mars or Phoebos (don't remember exactly - they are almost same) were also a game a played a lot.
Robbo - the game I'm sure was not known outside of Eastern Europe - it was made by some Chech guy, and it's a truely masterpice. Absolute must have, must play, must anything. It's a boulder dash look-a-like, but much much deeper gameplay, diverse and it's just awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone

Love this series. If you have more games and make more videos, I’ll be watching.👍

I really enjoyed your three videos. Thanks a lot!! My first computer was an Atari 130XE. I got it in (84?) because a leading American consumer magazine said it was the home computer to get. Sort of regretted this afterwards as the C64 took off. Still, the Atari 8-bit was pretty amazing machine. In many ways almost the equal of the C64 and in a few ways superior. Pretty incredible when you think that the Atari came out 3 years earlier than the Commodore. That was a lifetime back then. There were several reasons why it lost out. One was the fact that developers were reticent to develop for 64K since much of the Atari installed base was stuck at 48K. Second was the perception (at least in the US) that there was a lot of piracy in the Atari community. Finally, although the system could do some amazing things, it took more tricks and complex programming than the C64. Many have equated the Atari 8-bit with the Amiga in terms of brilliant (but costly) hardware. and Atari ST with C64 as the less capable but affordable alternatives.. Thanks again.

You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed them 👍
And it was a similar story in the UK, when I got my 65xe the high street stores were selling them for £99 and that was bundled with a cassette deck, the c64 was far more expensive at the time but ZX Spectrums were a very popular low cost option.
I did feel like I was missing out on some of the big name games at the time but still had a lot of fun with the Atari. Plus it's proven to be incredibly reliable, 30+ years later and it still works perfectly 👍

Up up and away was a great game. I had completely forgotten about it until it appeared.

I've played a few of these games! Of course being in the U.S. these were loaded from disk.

I had an Atari 800 with a cassette player, disc drive, dot matrix printer, alien voice box, and modem. I was in heaven. I don't remember us having these affordable games on tape here in the US.

    • @RetroTechHQ
      @RetroTechHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's interesting because I assumed that the US was mostly disk based.. and I can still hear the sound of my Oki Microline dot matrix 👍😎.. I've never heard of an alien voice box though!!

@@RetroTechHQ We didn't have the abundance of cheap tape games in the US. =( They were pricey with big boxes. UK market had an advantage in this regard. Great video keep it up.

Thanks once again for this dose of Atari 8-bit nostalgia. I had about half of these for my 800 here in the U.S., but as for the ones I didn't have? Looks like I didn't miss much! 😊

And yeh there's a lot of bad games but at least they make the videos more interesting 👍😂

On Mirax force if you type in the initials CPM(programmer initials) it disables the sprite collision

Panther needs a 3/4 perspective “yardstick,” with a tick on it, showing the altitude of your ship, like Zaxxon.

The most impressive game regarding speech synthesis on the Atari is Microprose' Kennedy Approach. And there it is an integral part of the gameplay.

    Lovin your series of videos!
Up up and away review is hilarious 😂
Panther is what got me into Atari 8 bit.
Why did star choice put those horrific stickers all over the cassettes!
Good to see you restoring 8 bit computers too. I enjoy doing the same quite regular.

I thought it was just my local newsagent that put the "star choice" stickers on the cases! They must've been a distribution company 👍😎

Havent looked it up, but guessing Red max is based on the same engine as the Last V8. Seems like similar gameplay, and similar cockpit eating up most of the screen. Cant say for sure if it has the same somewhat confusing controls though!

What do I think of Atari Safari? It's a game made up of unfeeling pixels that can be blown up, shot, stabbed, thrown in a blender, and any other horrible thing one can imagine...it doesn't matter. I believe the game could easily be released today and the great majority of people here in the states wouldn't care one way or the other and why should they? Personally you could be using tactical nuclear strikes on pixelated dolphins and I wouldn't care because at the end of the day it's 100% fake. I would like to go back to the days where everyone realized this and acted like adults.
The only group of "people" and that's using the term lightly that claim to care about this stuff are only doing it for control. They spend their time on Twitter demanding others bend the knee like a group of real Nazi's and I personally don't care what they think about anything. Further, the group they belong to is so infinitesimally small that they honestly mean nothing here. The few cities that bow down to these useless goons are themselves the laughing stock of the country.
Case in point- One of the offending cities *cough Chicago is apparently trying to ban GTAV but I guess that's what you get when you allow the outrage mob to run your city. The rest of us are currently popping popcorn because a show this stupid needs an audience. That's what I think about Atari Safari.
I'm sorry, this kind of stuff I have little time for. If you give into the outrage mob they own you for life. No amount of appeasement or placating them will suffice. You must be strong with your stance and refuse to give them an inch. My speech is something that is not for sale and I will not allow it to be curbed for any reason. If need be I will happily die for it and our Westernized culture.

Don't apologise, I'm a big believer in people having opinions and being free to express them, even if those opinions aren't necessarily considered ideal by the Twitter crowd! I just think we need to be sensible about it, extreme views should of course be monitored but I think a lot of people with perfectly reasonable views are attacked nowadays just because they don't agree with the online crowd. 🤔
There's an interesting court case happening in the UK at the moment about this very subject, it involves a guy who said something on social media that offended someone else, they reported him for it.. next thing he knows the police have turned up at his work and charged him with a hate crime.. he's arguing that this breaches his right to freedom of expression.. it'll be interesting to see how this all pans out over the next few years. 🤔

Well thank you man. I agree that extreme views should be watched very carefully. As long as violence isn't part of the equation I don't think someone should be jailed. Watch lists, you better believe it but not jailed. Any kind of terroristic threats should be very closely monitored because you never know.
