How to vet news articles, from my What Is Truth?/Fake News class: 1. Does the body match the headline? 2. Does the reporter give direct or indirect evidence? 3. Does the reporter show what they know or don't know? 4. Does the article answer the main questions of Who/what/when/why/where/how? 5. Does the article give enough context? 6. Does the article show boths sides of the story? 7. Use the IMVAIN method to evaluate the sources. Independent: does the source have anything to gain by telling the story? Verifiable: Can you confirm what they're saying? Authoritative/Informed: is the person telling the story an expert or witness? Named: does the reporter name the source, who is talking? If you need more to elaborate on any of them, questions are welcome.
I love this so much!! I’m really excited for your middle school interactive notebooks. I’m going into my 7th year of 7th grade ELA, and I’m always looking for ways to spice up our research unit. My district does a digital citizenship lesson with all 8th graders, but I feel like this is SO IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE!!

The best and worst thing about being a teacher is summer “vacation.” I’m constantly looking into and checking out things for my classroom, but I should be resting. I teach 8th grade ELA, and this is definitely always in my lesson plan book. Great resources! I can’t wait to try several of them!

I have been teaching in a rural public high school for three years now and I am happy to report that I love it!
