I remember reading a section of the Kefauver Hearing transcripts and I was impressed with Bill Gaines' testimony. I'll have to look for the exact quote, but he basically said "I can no more explain the thrill of reading a horror comic to a Mr. Wertham than I can explain the sublimity of love to a frigid old maid!" Talk about BURRRN!
Oh, you almost nailed it perfectly! Gaines said, "It would be just as difficult to explain the harmless thrill of a horror story to a Dr. Wertham as it would be to explain the sublimity of love to a frigid old maid." Here's a link to the transcript: www.thecomicbooks.com/gaines.html
"My child is misbehaving! Is it my shit parenting that is to blame? No...its those blasted comic books! Never mind that I bought them for my kid or at least had knowledge that my kid had them, its not my fault, its the comic! Ah its nice to have something else to blame so I don't have to take responsibility..."
8:23 Yep, an example of someone having good intentions, but using bad/less-than-stellar methods of carrying them out. Perhaps the most damaging aspect of the Golden Age comics was the depiction of black people and Asian people in a negative manner, but at that point, that's more on the irresponsible writers/artists themselves than on the comics medium as a whole.
Kefauver and Wertham were both socially liberal Democrats. They decried the racism being put out by everyone, yet they went really hard against EC, who were combating racism and stereotypes for years. And while they both claimed not to want censorship, they did the same thing that future Democrats did like Joe Breen (MPAA film ratings), the Gores (PMRC record advisor stickers) and Joe Liberman (Videogame ratings) and created industry censorship boards that piss upon the First Amendment. Makes me wonder why conservatives get a reputation for trying to ban everything...
@@RockandrollNegro Even EC used racial stereotypes like with Diggy Do in International Comics, but I get what you mean. The horror EC was putting out shouldn’t detract from their good intentions either. Also, I heard it wasn’t even Wertham’s idea to censor, but simply wanted publishers to hold themselves more responsible, and I think that more comic fans would listen to him if he had just focused on race.
I seriously fucking despise people like Fredrick Wertham. He was such a piece of shit. Also, over the past few months, I've gotten quite a number of the EC Archives that Dark Horse put out, and a couple from Gemstone from the 00s. The EC stories are actually a lot tamer than I expected them to be, and for the most part there isn't anything that most kids 12 and older wouldn't be able to handle. I did enjoy reading them, though, even if they did sometimes get a little formulaic. They were still a lot of fun overall
10:52 As well as Gilberton (1941-1971), who published later comics like The World Around Us, and Fawcett Comics (1939-1980), who published later comics like Dennis the Menace and His Friends, though it can be understood why you didn't include Fawcett after what happened with their lawsuit.

...And to think Wertham could have been a "Sigmund Freud level" psychologist if he didn't started this anti-comic crusade. All that knowledge wasted on satanizing a medium of entertainment.
Not necessarily the Killer at Dark Knight Rises copied ideas from The Dark Knight use rifle in a movie theater and also left explosives in his apartment (although in movie was a hospital). More than one movie and also books, magazines, ect were copied.
I would say that the book and movement uses a lot of logical fallacies such as appealing to fear, authority, repetition, distrusting new things and justifying why two different things are the same. 2:06 I was confused how the scene had lesbian overtones. I thought maybe it's saying that Wonder Woman she's having the girl become an amazon and indoctrinate her in the ways of lesbian sisterhood. My mom stated it could be that the girl isn't dieting and that makes her a lesbian in the 50's standard as she isn't doing what a woman of the 1950's should be doing (doing her best to look thin and beautiful to land a husband and have children and tend home). Maybe it's some combination of both. 6:15 What the movement is in a nutshell. Parents don't understand how their children can find something new interesting, and will state how it's evil and corrupting them. New books, movements, ideas, comics, films, Television, video games, the internet, and cellphones are examples. Adults claim these things corrupt the youth and ruin their generation.

We found the real villain: Fred Werthan

This sort of propaganda is sickening. Glad we've move well past these times.
Considering that we have modern day Werthams trying to demonize comics for having more lgbt and poc representation shows that things never changed.
You are not immune to propaganda
Ehhh... Not really. If anything the propaganda - towards other forms of entertainment - has gotten worse really.
