Brad Jersak - Sermon on The Mount (Word of Life Church 25.04.2010)
Brad Jersak is an author and teacher based in Abbotsford, BC, where he attends Fresh Wind Christian Fellowship. His heart is to share the good news that God is Love and that God's love was shown to us perfectly in Jesus of Nazareth. Through his books and seminers, Brad teaches that anyone can learn to hear God's voice through the simple practice of "listening prayer." Those who practice listening prayer find that God's love heals wounded hearts and empowers them to heal this broken world.
Brad Jersak's foundational book, "Can You Hear Me? Tuning in to the God who speaks" ( amzn.to/18Vc9LK ).trains readers in the ways of "Listening Prayer." This book provides biblical teaching and 33 practical exercises for tuning in to God's voice.

This is well done and is telling me as one selfish person to do a bit of study on Sermon on Mount thanks so much. Perhaps this will me tell me that life does not revolve me

Fyodor Dostoevsky has Father Zosima in the Brothers Karamazov say to someone: With most of us, for love to become an effective reality in our lives, it must be practiced as a science (practiced like a scientist does good science).
The Sermon on the Mount is the Rock on which that Science of Love is buildt.

Brad is mixing salvation and discipleship. But those are two different things.
We ARE saved by grace and not by works!! That's in your bible.
That does NOT mean you don't have to follow Jesus by obeying His sermon.
It just means: following Jesus and obeying His sermon is NOT what gets you saved or keeps you saved!!
You cannot earn your salvation by obeying rules or teachings. Salvation is a FREE GIFT of God.
Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
Gal 2:16 We...know that a man is not justified by works of the Law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law, because by works of the Law no one will be justified.
Rom 3:25-27 God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.
Matthew 7:21 should be read in context. Jesus is talking about false prophets here!! They will come to Him and say: ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
Jesus answers them: ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’
So they prophesied, they drove out demons, they performed many miracles. Isn't that among the things Jesus commands His disciples? Yet Jesus calls their works 'lawless', and according to Jesus they were not doing the will of God (verse 21).
Then what IS the will of God?
In John 6:28-29 the crowds ask Jesus: “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
And this is what Jesus has to say about the will of the Father:
John 6:38-40 …For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”…
So, once you have believed in the One God has sent, once you ARE saved (by grace, not works, through faith in what Jesus has accomplished!), you are a new creation, born of God, born of the Spirit. NOW you are called to follow Jesus and obey His teachings, not to earn anything, but because you want to please your Father and look like Him!
His Spirit lives in us; He will bring to remembrance the words and teachings of Jesus and He will work those teachings out in our lives, day by day. Even after we have been saved, our religious ego wants to be able to boast: look how obedient I am; look how I deserve God's free gift. Everytime we are confronted with our selfish motives and selfrighteous efforts to be good enough, we cast that burden unto Jesus and we yield to His Holy Spirit and He will sanctify us and make us more like Jesus.
So, salvation is a moment in time when you fully rely on what Jesus has done to save you. No effort on our part!
Discipleship is a lifelong process where you fully rely on what the Holy Spirit is doing in you to sanctify you. Our effort here is to resist the temptations and desires of the flesh and yield to the Spirit, so HE can sanctify us.

While there are many valuable thoughts in this message, there is also slander. I'm not an apologist for Martin Luther but the evidence is overwhelming that Luther strongly encouraged all followers of Christ to obey the sermon on the mount. Also, a quick survey of bible commentators from the previous 150 years will disprove his contention that all but one and a half of them discouraged Christians from attempting to obey the sermon on the mount. Brother Jersak asked us to trust his historical research but when one does his own research he will find the speaker's so called research untrustworthy indeed. My own motivation for checking out Brad's research was a desire to confirm it and include it in my own teaching but I must confess disappointment in that regard.

I was directly quoting Dietrich Bonhoeffer at this point. That was the nature of my research. Not Luther as such, but Bonhoeffer's critique.

@@BradJersakauthor I don't really understand your answer here. I mean, it doesn't line up with what I thought you said. However, in my personal, decades-long journey in the church, there has been a strange and ubiquitous reluctance to dwell in the gospels. And I have been directly taught that Jesus's sermons are meant to show us a law we cannot keep. I, for one, want to go back to the gospels, go back to Jesus, and start over. The path I was on before led to bad places, a split in my soul. So, thank you for this sermon.

@@kkrenken895 this is where the idea of heaven and Hell fall completely apart it makes the Bible so confusing it’s crazy so basically Jesus taught people how we should live on this earth and how we are going to live in the new heaven and new earth and then he died on the cross to defeat death so all of humanity gets to live forever and ever but get this that doesn’t mean u can continue to sin because there is actually punishment in heaven because in order to be justice God has to punish sin is that punishment required to last forever not according to the Greek it’s not so in conclusion that is the New Testament simplified
