I did a lock wire exhaust video here: th-cam.com/video/I3fsQGCFd9U/w-d-xo.html If you use the cheap new starter, it has to be drilled out as it has threads you don't want. Also have a safety switch video here: th-cam.com/video/k5XhlYeAp5o/w-d-xo.html
So that bushing at the end of your Bendix has a C clip under it. Back the Bendix all the way in and press down bushing towards the spring. Wedge a screw driver in and it pops right out. There are already all the marks you need if you look, you will see them. Easy to line up everything
Thank you. They were so corroded I didn't see them. I did this video on the fly just like this OEM vs Aftermarket replacement video th-cam.com/video/RU8oEN3FsL0/w-d-xo.html
Time and energy to rebuild, plus brush rebuild kit ($20 average), it's prob best to just get a new starter for about $40 shipped on Amazon. I am in the same boat, about to sell a 96 HX with the 717 engine. Prob just going to get a new one.
@@geostomp WIll do! Seems to be mixed reviews on the new starter units, prob not Denso units like the originals. If I go the rebuild route, I will replace the bearing also. There's another person who made a video, he was able to pry it off without using the puller. Things are starting to add up on this thing and I am only getting it ready to sell, but like doing things right so the next person doesn't get caught out.
@@geostomp yup you are right sir. I bought a cheap $45 ebay starter no brand…. It’s terrible, only worked for half a boating season now… it wont even start, stay away from cheap starters just get OEM rebuilt or maybe the SBT one
Thanks I got a lot more insight out of your video then all the others in here.they just blow in by the steps your shows the Ins and outs

Let me know how it goes. Some say the new starters caused them problems.

Yeah, nothing like having no start 1000ft out, which is why I "rebuilt" the OEM
I bought a replacement and it lasted 2 years. Replaced it again and sold it.
