Great video! This morning my son's Dakota was stuck in 4Hi and would not go back into 2WD. Crawled underneath right where you said, and sure enough the hot wire and become brittle and broke. Spliced in some new wires that I had in the garage and fixed in under 30 minutes, no cost. Thanks again!!
THIS is precisely the reason I've kept my 99 Dakota for all these years. I bought it new, it has manual shift 4X4 and when I engage it, IT GOES IN EVERY TIME! This thing is going on 20 years old, it's still like new and I'll never sell it. Been through all this shit with a Ford I had in the 90s, no more for me!
I'd like to meet the person that thought that replacing a simple lever with 50 pounds of motors, wires, and feedback circuits was a good idea. I would hurt this person real real bad. It wouldn't be so bad, but it seems on some vehicles you don't even have the option any more. Patently stupid.
So friggin glad they still make atvs with cable operated 4wd actuators. Kinda funny, my 02 ram has all this electric bs, and my new 2019 Honda Rancher 4x4 has the simple cable system.
I agree. I eliminated the vacuum axle dash pot for a cable on my Dodge Ram and fortunately it's still stick operated. (2001) I'll be posting a video of that truck going up rocky steep mountain roads pulling a camper today.
Nice video but I have a question for you ? I have a 2001 Dakota and I’ve changed almost every part that can go bad except for the one behind the switch and I still have nothing and I can’t find anything wrong with the wiring so my question is is there any website or any information anywhere else online ? I also bought a manual transfer case from a 1997 Dakota and I know that that will work but I’m trying not to cut anymore holes in it unless I have to ??? Please do more of these videos on the Dakota and let me know if you find anything else that can help me out thanks
Hi, I have a 02 durango 4.7 45RFE trany. I went to use the 4x4 yesterday and there was nothing. I have the selector switch, i notice the 2wd is not lit and it was last week. When i switch to 4x4 hi or lo, no sound the it's engaging and no lights either.. I ran across your video so I will check it out.Any other suggestions? thank for posting your video. Sixpack Mitchell Chester, Ct
Can you help me identify my dodge dakotas 4wd issue it shows 4wd service light on dash constantly I have same year same engine 2002 4.7l v8 and when I switch to 4wd first couple days it happened it had a few blinks now it doesn't blink or even bother to switch to 4wd when it's turned to 4wd hi or low I haven't tried what is shown in video but I would like to know if there is anything else possibly wrong with it what do you think mechanically could be broken that wouldn't allow engagement please thank you (sorry if I butchered the explanation of my issue)
ive got a 03 dakota 3.9 4x4 lite flashes , checked for power at the plug too the motor on the transfer case and its got power on both sides of the plug? if i run poss an neg 2 the motor it switches from 2 wheel too 4 wheel? any ideas ty
My son has a 2007 Dodge Dakota .. it is an automatic.. and seems like it is all wheel drive all the time.. the light on the dash has 4 wheel drive lit.. is it possible that this truck is only 4 wheel drive? He just bought this and no manual.
What is this connector called? Mine has the exact problem I spliced and it worked but can’t find out what it’s called to get at parts store and they don’t know even with a picture lol
I have 2003 model awd and 4wd my front right driver tire seem to clicking whe. I start driving down the road seem one the u joints in front axle is wore out
I have an 06 dakota 4.7 4x4 and the 4 wheel kept shifting in and out on its own, even when the truck is off. It eventually just went stopped doing it and won't go into 4 wheel at all but the srv4x4 light comes on and off still when I'm driving. Any ideas?
I was driving my 2005 Dakota 4x4 on the interstate when I lost all forward motion. I pulled off to the side of the road and had no forward, reverse or park. Engine runs fine. Transmission is new. That tells me it is the transfer case and maybe the electrical motor. I did notice after pulling off the highway that the neutral light was on for the transfer case. Neutral is used for towing the truck behind an RV or another vehicle. Not sure why the transfer case would change to neutral by itself. Any ideas?
I have the 2001 Dakota, 4.7L Standard mine just automatically goes into 4 high and won't come out, sometimes it will be in 2wd for a short time then go right back to 4 hi, I replaced the switch today and it still has the same issue, the service 4x4 soon light comes on and this has been a huge annoyance for a month now, I'm getting paranoid about driving it In 4 wheel drive, I heard you can disable circuit that controls it, I'm going to try it in a minute but I still want my 4x4 back ASAP
Mine is in 4WD but won't shift out. It had been intermittent a few times prior to it failing. So I'm thinking it may be this exact thing. I'm gonna crawl under it tonight. Spring is here now and I can't be driving around on dry pavement in 4WD.
TNA2Me I have the same issue I put my truck is 4wd low to put it up on ramps to take a look at my exhaust and I brought it back down and it put it in neutral and and flip the Switch. It is just blinking and then goes back to 4wd low. If you find the fix I’d be happy if y’all could help me out. Email is frankpoleck@gmail.com
I have a question that no one seems to understand maybe someone else has the same issue. but my 04 Dakota 4x4 won't even engage unless you drive it for about 10 mins then it works all day as long as it isn't cold once it is cold the incoder motor doesn't even make a sound but when it's warm it works all day
I have a similar issue. 2001 Dodge Dakota. Would not switch into LoRange until it warmed up. Then over time, (like years!) it got so the warm up took longer and longer, all the way to an hour and 65 miles. Finally to to the point that LORange has not been accessible for a couple years! AWD to 4x4 seems to work fine although the lights on the switch module flash all the time. They started flashing when the issue began and went off any time that LoRange became accessible; so the lights do match the presence of an issue. Have Googled and looked at forums but no reference as to why temperature might be a problem. Could it be thick lubricants? I Really must look seriously for a wiring problem.
@serenidadypaciencia I can think of other shorts I like better... like this one pair my wife wears! Ooooh baby! I was on a Maxima yesterday for six hours tracking down four wires in a 60 wire cluster... it's like doing accounting work. Yuck!
Joe Kelderman Is it finally a recall?? My 2008 shifts into 4wheel drive randomly, then shifts back. Ever been driving 70 mph and have it kick into 4wd???!!! Not good. I pulled the actuator motor fuse. Only way to get it into 4wd is pop the hood, put the fuse in, turn nob to 4wd, and pull fuse again so it's basically stuck in 4wd. Very inconvenient! Haven't been able to find the culprit yet...maybe this video will solve the problem. Find out tomorrow. I was hoping for an official recall, finally.
my 2005 is AWD 4HI 4Lo then there is a N reset button , and it only locks when slow turn to the right , but the 05 durango does not qualify on the recall list
the dodge dealer is charging me $2300 for the FCM computer and the encoder module that got damaged, but the 05 and 06 durango is not part of the recall list
dodge dealer told me this morning the FCM $1230 and Encoder Motor $565 , and after install will be $2300 , for some reason the 05 and 06 durango are not on the list even though it is the same issue with the durango line on the recall list
@@visciousadventures dodge calls it a computer that recieves random voltage and wants $2800 for the computer and then another $800 to program it to the truck , dodge claims i can not just get another computer from another truck at the junkyard and put it in , cause it was not programed for my truck
I tried this with our truck and it didnt' work at all, i think we have a much bigger problem. Maybe it is a short that we have on the truck. Last night when i started the truck and changed gear from drive to part, as i moved to park, it made a noise

Way late I know but I had the last year of f150, 2003 to have a manual 4wd lever. I wish I still had that truck just for that reason.

Still appreciated! Still driving my '02 Dakota in low salt Colorado, but great to know!
Thanks for this video. Have a 2003 This was exactly the problem with mine. You saved me alot of time and money
I have a service 4WD light on my 03 Durango 4.7 but no lights on the switch. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks for the vid.
the switch in the dash is bad and needs to be replaced
Thank you for this video you just helped me sooo much. Was able to fix the issue in about 20-25 minutes, it was the wiring issue.

the switch in the dash needs to be replaced.
@lQtasticl The key is to insulate and route the wires so they don't rub their skibbies off.

Same problem with mine that I'm dealing with right now! I was hoping to get it working before the snow sets in.
