BARN FIND Benelli 750 SEI 6 Cylinder!

  • Barn Find Benelli 750 SEI 6 cylinder!! That is a sentence you don't get to say often. Like all of the bikes I find this one came from Facebook Marketplace and had JUST been listed when I saw it. The ad had a single photo similar to the thumbnail in this video and I knew something was off as the engine width wasn't like a normal 4 cylinder. I contacted the seller right then and quickly hit the road before the next guy. Needless to say it was an awesome score!
    Now I have never owned a Benelli and honestly know hardly anything about them but feel very confident I can make this icon live another day. Since it won't be a project I get to for a while I can use that time for research and parts sourcing which is ok by me. Just imagine how cool this bike would be as a period road racer with a 6 into 1, full fairing, and custom race inspired pieces throughout!
    I know many of you will have an issue with my statement of "it's not worth restoring" but hear me out. It would take a minimum of $20k in parts and labor to do this to a concourse level and probably 2 years or more with parts rarity. When done it could bring a max of $40k which leaves $20k profit spread over 2 plus years. Thats $10k per year and not a livable income in my opinion. I do not see most bikes as an investment but rather the thing that fuel my passion in life. I appreciate restored bikes but feel this is not the right bike for that. As my joy comes from reviving and riding these old machines not seeing them sit hidden away in private collections never to be ridden.

    Hey everyone just wanted to jump on here say I hope you like the video! This is definitely one of the best finds I'll ever get and can't wait to make progress on it in the future! I know it doesn't matter what I do I will always upset some people but I wanted to address the restoration thing right away. I know many of you will have an issue with my statement of "it's not worth restoring" but hear me out. It would take a minimum of $20k in parts and labor to do this to a concourse level and probably 2 years or more with parts rarity. As my joy comes from reviving and riding these old machines not seeing them sit hidden away in private collections never to be ridden. You all must also understand that I had 24 hours to dig the bike out and perform the checks I did before I had to get back on other bikes. I wish I could spend more time on everything but I'm only one guy so please bear with me.

    I'm 76 and remember when these bikes came out. I was riding Honda's fours in those days though I have owned just about every bike make available in the U.S. at one time or another. I still have my 3 original Harley's and my first love, a 1949 Cushman Highlander motor scooter I bought when I was 14. I still ride them all.

    Thanks for the video BJ. It's nice to see the challenging rebuilds as well as the homeruns, keeps me from feeling like I'm completely out-of-my league or cursed when I come across similar frustrations. A period racer would be very cool, something that you don't see everyday, and more relatable than some chromed-out trailer queen.

    I have actually ridden one of these bikes. One of my friends bought one from an old timer who didn't know what he had or what it was worth. My friend is one of those guys that always seems to find those unbelievable deals. The owner thought it was shot and needed a full rebuild but my buddy noticed that the plug wires might be wired wrong, SO he offered the guy around $2500 for it (it was several years ago) and he took the bike home. The firing order was incorrect LOL. They are pretty fast and very rare. The best thing about these bikes is the sound! They rev to around 9K and sound like a Ferrari! Good luck with the repair.

    Amazing, this one was a rollercoaster for sure. I noticed the fairing bracket on the front from your picture on the weekend but after looking at it for a few minutes realized I had no idea what it was other than some old custom racer, but hey I'm still learning this stuff. I agree turning it into a more modern version of what it was would be pretty cool but time to do it is your other issue. Would be one helluva build series though. 👍👍

    I am pretty sure you've heard of this before but, just in case "Black Ironwood" or "Oak" wood wedges work wonders on cases and most cylinder heads and jugs. If you make them in 7 sizes (you'll know which ones) they can cut the hammering and fatigue in half with way less effort. I learned that from a guy that built "Side Valve" and "Knucklehead" Harley's!

    The first bike I ever fell in love with. I worked in the steel factory where my Dad worked, for a few months after finishing school. One day, a workmate rode in on a brand new silver Sei Six. I think it was 1976 or 77. Those stunningly beautiful exhaust pipes and the incredible sound. My Honda CB 200 paled into insignificance in comparison. A week or so later he came off the Benelli on a bend and destroyed one side of the bike. I never saw it again, but I can still picture it in my mind's eye, all these years later.

    I enjoyed watching your video, buying something like the bike you just bought, you never know for certain, but you still have options, something you might get running or a parts bike, I would imagine someone else restoring a bike like that would pay good money for parts off yours, so either way you should come out ok, even though I'm an old man, I still learn a lot from you, like the rust in the gas tank video, it will help me on my 920 Yamaha, my 90 Honda and my 64 -250 Ford truck my dad bought brand new all rusty tanks, I'm 76 slow but effective
    Lol.

    It’s always an advantage to try to get a motor to run early on to see if there is value in continuing. Bought one with a blown piston but didn’t notice until dropping $500 in parts. Should have made it run first.

      @BrickHouseBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Benelli multi's were basically copies of Honda cb500's with 2 extra cylinders added. Many engine parts are identical to Honda parts. I recall hearing that the bore and stroke and the valves, are the same as the Honda, and the valve inspection covers also. I imagine that getting genuine Benelli parts may prove problematic! Wow nice score. There was a perfect small bike shop in town here called British Motorcycles.Through the `70s they were new bike dealers for BSA, Triumph, Norton, Laverda, BMW, Moto Morini, the odd Ducati or Benelli. Never more than 10 new bikes in the showroom, the selection varied constantly. If you turned your back to the showroom, you were standing at the parts counter, which looked like a re purposed bar. Yes that small.
    They had a couple of 750 SEI in there over one summer. Both were Ferrari red with 6 into 6 exhaust. You could even buy aftermarket 6 into 6 systems to make them cooler and louder. Only a few guys in North America raced those, still with 6 pipes! A pal had a 900 SEI with stock 6 into 2 pipes. It was faster but no louder and not as wild as the 6 pipes. Remember the mufflers then were way smaller, forget the huge cans used now. Like paint can size or less.
    There were even 6 into 6 aftermarket pipes for a CBX. Coolest blasting sound you ever heard.
    Hope your project works. Beware of the nasty sharp edges the Italians left on mating surfaces. Got some cuts from those till we learned to de-burr them asap.

      @BrickHouseBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s definitely worth bringing back to life. I suggest you simply get it running at your leisure over time without rushing anything, heck you may even find some needed parts as time goes by. Aluminum tig welding is tricky if your not experienced with welding aluminum. Definitely worth taking the motor apart for a proper repair… but cost effectiveness is the big factor here.. I would never trust JB weld, I lost a motor like that!
    I wish you luck with it… and someday if you decide to sell I would be interested in it. I am a professional machinist and wouldn’t mind diving into it. Wishing you the best no matter what direction you take.

    • @BrickHouseBuilds
