    7C is a very innovative game but by no means perfect. Exploration is the best part of the game and it gets old the more you play as all curses are in the same location with some minor differences. Value-wise I think that the cheapest, non-KS base game with 3 curses is the best way to go.

    Great review. As a primarily solo gamer, 7th Continent will stay in my collection always. Filing system is burdensome at clean up, but I love the adventure so much, that the cost of filing seems minimal. Sure, a video game can erase that. I don't know. It's a lot of filing, yet...I repeatedly set right up again after failing. For me... it's worth it. But that's because I'm a solo gamer, and can leave games on my table for days.

    Thanks for the review! I had been thinking about whether maybe I should back 7th Citadel, despite initially thinking it wasn't for me. Watching you play, and then give your thoughts confirmed to me that it's not something I need or want to back. It really looks like it would be best as a solo experience, but then it just looks a little too much maintenance for the fun factor that it's providing.
    Wallet status: still safe.

    Watched a few of your videos and this one got me to subscribe.
    I like the fact that you do not give up to the hype (very easy now with 7th Citadel already over 1.5M on Kickstart) and seriously review the important pros and cons that may cause different people to like or dislike the game.
    Very precise, very coherent and very deep without overdoing it.
    Especially when a considerable investment (in money and time) is on the line, this is really the kind of review I needed.
    Thank you for this great review!
    BTW: is 7th Continent at all available outside the second hand market?

    Here is a suggestion : How about an interview with someone from Kickstarter's development team? You could ask them their plans for the future of the platform and how they perceive the needs of the board games community.
    Good video as usual! :)

    Great review. Personally i didn't have problems with card filing, it's just 5 minutes at most. Also you need to use a notebook. Finally, the game is a solo game at heart and to enjoy it you need to have 1-2 hours sessions.

    For such an amazing game and for as successful as it is, I'm surprised they didn't handle the character design differently. The UI is great! But the character renders aren't at the level I would expect. Awesome overview and I'm looking forward to playing this.

    Great review Alex, really like your structured approach, which makes it easy to follow and to digest.
    I agree that 7th continent is a game where frequency of play matters a lot. If the game sessions of one curse are too separated, the problem with lack of memory appears, as you explained. I've also experienced playing it too often, which makes you notice the very limited amount of mechanics, and that the isle itself doesn't change.
    Nevertheless, I will keep the game and have pledged for the 7th citadel, because when played with correct frequency for oneself, it's a blast!!
    My suggestion to enjoy the game is playing 1-2 times a week for the same curse, and stop playing at least 2 months between curses.
    My plans for 7th citadel is playing it in a group, if possible.
    7th continent will stay in my collection for some years as my go to solo game. Lather I might sell it, but for now, I don't plan on it.

    Though I don't have this game, everything I see here is something I want. I understand that the multiplayer will not work that well and I see why, but I think with the correct person in a co-op it could work. Like one friend I have I know we will enjoy this, but other friends not so much.

    For me it was kinda like that initial Guild wars 2 experience. No guides, just explore and stumble upon cool stuff. As far as multiplayer goes, it seems like 7th citadel will be much better for that and I can't wait for it.

    good review! just a thought for those that don't want to play solo. i play with my wife who is just getting into boardgames and we have a blast on the continent! yes, it is slower, yes, i do the heavylifting and have to check on the items and what not because she can't yet manage everything and yes, it takes a lot of time to get through a curse. but in the end of the day it is time well spent with someone i love and we really enjoy that one or two hours that we get every other day and allways end up: what?! is it 11pm already?! damn, lets save and go to bed. don't be afraid to buy it to play with two if you have someone that is not very much into competitive playing and like a good adventure book/movie. this will give a great bang for your buck!

  • @Ale_Friend
    @Ale_Friend 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think at 7th like a true masterpiece, but with some really relevant issues. I played a lot solo and also with some Friends which became a dedicated team. The Memory aspect in my opinion is fixed mapping, which Is a strange thing initially because It seems Just a flavor activity, not a mechanic. But when you map, draw notes, hunting spot and curse icon and on next runs you look at them, you feel experienced of the continent. Like you would be if you really will explore new areas. It enhances your experience. Prodigy mode and Immortal mode in the WGUMCD expansion fix the frustrating issue of death and retry, giving you chance to choose if you want to die and restart or Just enjoy exploration.
    But to enjoy all this things you have to own the expansion(s). And you have to play It leaving It on a dedicated table, for at least 2hrs every time. If you can do this you can avoid almost all the issues you told about (which I understand, especially the filing system which is a little boring)
    So nice review and nice thoughts as usual. 7th Is a MUST TRY for every player in the hobby, and It Is a truly masterpiece if you can play accepting some unusual experiencial approaches to boardgaming experience and if you can take care of play environment with a large organized table and space dedicated to It when you play it.
    Bye Alex, keep following you

    Enjoyed this balanced review. Agree with most of your pros and some cons. It's a great solo game. About the memory bit, maybe draw a map? There's even an official 7th Continent cartographer's notebook made for this purpose. I don't draw a map because I see my sketchy memory as a bonus as it enhances the replayability of the game! :)
    Note to new players: the fire figure should not start in play. You first need to get an item that lets you make fire.

    7th Continent is best with 1 or 2 in my experience because it does allow a second set of eye for all those hidden clues. Especially in the longer curses, there's a lot to keep track of for just one person. i generally keep track of mapping, while my wife keeps track of the clues. i did play it once with 4, but that definitely bogged it down. Do you play it with multiple characters or just one, because there's also an optimization game with respect to equipment and hand? It's very much a choose your own adventure and learning from your past plays, so that shared knowledge and book keeping really is critical to it. i definitely agree with you regarding the filing system aspect. Generally i get around that by taking the 000-003 cards out (as they will always see frequent taking and returning) and that the continent for the most part is grouped in the areas of the dividers, so whatever part of the island i'm on, i will remove that as well for ease of play.

    Great comments. I found the card cataloging a hassle too. It is a neat concept, but in reality it took away from the fun for me. I didn't like the table space that was needed to lay the card/map out. And, I was extremely frustrated when I tried to work through a puzzle that I couldn't solve only to find (after a google search) that I needed to play more, find more clues, then come back to the puzzle. Some of the game wasn't intuitive enough for me.

    • @BoardGameCo

I'd absolutely love to have this as a digital game though, or y'know, a good old choose your own adventure book. Don't quite get the whole card based thing, just makes it so much more of a hassle to play, and I feel the game gains little from it.

    I actually think the game has great direction. I don't think I ever played a curse where I didn't know where to go, at least roughly - even in the very first curse I played (voracious) you could always find landmarks, check em with the clue sketch, and get an idea where to head.
    Drawing a map adds a LOT to the experience, too.

  • @lotterwinner6474
    @lotterwinner6474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Alex It sounds like you need something that would let you leave the game setup, a table, a gaming table if you will. /s
    For real though I think 7th continent is something special. The best comparison I could give is a a point and click adventure game, and I would use that comparison if your trying to gauge if you will like it or not. The game is able to keep you engaged while not having a mechanic that is very engaging. But because there is a sense of wonder & mystery, just enough subtle hints in each map tile drawn that you are pushed forward. It's a game I think will always be in my collection. For some reason it's a game I have a attachment to that will prevent me from selling it. Or perhaps its me justifying the absurd price I paid for it. I will say this, I recommend just getting the classic edition. I have all the major content for 7th continent and its hard to justify the time investment.

  • @Jemethyy
    @Jemethyy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review. What frustrated me most of all with 7th Continent, which ended up leading me to sell it was the fact that you fail backwards instead of forwards. Failing backwards, as in, dying and having to start all over again. All I wanted to do was take my time exploring this fascinating game, but for me to die hours into a playthrough and be expected to just reset and start again was a deal breaker. When I started ignoring death, just to see what happened next, I realised I had to sell it. They clearly learned from this though and seem to have gone away form the survival element with the sequel. A great move in my opinion, but I'm still torn about backing it. The filing system IS annoying, totally agree.

      I don’t think it’s overproduced, it’s just a huge pile of cards. If you’re referring to the art, well, the map art looks nice, but the human characters are strikingly ugly. So maybe the problem is one of scale? Perhaps it’s just too big, in which case the retail version is actually a pretty good set.

      @@CheddahSlammer it' doesnt matter if you press on or not. You'll have to reset anyways. so just roam until the map is revealed. then get the right cards together to advance. the end.

    Great experience, bad game. The experience is something like Time Stories or Unlock, which if great for the first few hours but after a few losses or dragging the game into a second night it losses mass appeal. The game does lend to solo play but the character theme is immersive so it feels a little better than Pandemic, which don't enjoy. The mechanic for extending your attempt takes a lot of time and is very repetitive. There isn't much character progression for a game of this length and as you mentioned if you turn the wrong corner and die you only get to keep what you remember. I don't think it will stay on many people's shelves but maybe it is better that way so more people can enjoy the experience for a short while.

      There are no rails whatsoever in this game and this is actually one of its potential cons.

    I’m not a fan of solo play for this, but that is tainted by me because I don’t like playing solo.
    If you can put together a few friends and play for a 7-8 hour chunk at a time it’s great.
    I actually like the filing system and as long as you keep it tidy board maintenance is easy.
    I definitely feel the ‘Lack of Direction’ point. There were times when we played it that we had no idea where we were going or what we were doing. Kinda turns into an open world exploration game. I find if the people you play with love open world video games they’ll absolutely love this game.
    I’m not an open world game fan as I do prefer more narrative driven dungeon crawler character building games, however, the group I consistently play with love those types of games and I do feed off their energy in it.
    I do rate it high though and would probably give it an 8.5/10 even with my negatives.
    ...although you can play Amelia Earhart so 11/10. :D

    Looks way too tedious for my taste. Pass. Good review, though.
