Hi Adrian, all of these parts are absolutely spot on. Great job working it all out. We had a fantastic time making this record. Thanks for the kind words. Love the channel by the way. All the best, Norman
After getting to the end of the clip, here’s some additional info. Raymond played a 1963 Fender Jaguar through a 1958 Fender Deluxe. I played a 1970 Gibson 335 through an early 90’s Vox AC30. The acoustic guitars are Fylde Falstaff’s that we bought during the session. Gerry is playing an early 70’s Fender Precision through an old Ampeg SVT amp. Paul is on a 60’s Ludwig drum kit. The one we still use live.
The best things come to those who wait, Adrian. Such a great bunch of songwriters and this is fine example of just that. Thanks so much for the lesson and the play through.
I distinctly remember when this record came out - I was bedridden with a bad fever and stuck at home. I got up in the middle of the night, turned on the TV to the local cable access station that had a decent music show and this video came on. Even in my feverish haze, I thought, 'What a great song!'
According to interviews, Norman plays a Les Paul Custom through an AC30 on this record, which was also a staple of his live rig until he mostly switched to a late 60s es-335. Raymond plays a Guild-made Red Special through a late 50s tweed bassman and deluxe. I suspect we hear some of the Epiphone casino on the record, as well as Raymond's pre-cbs jaguar, and Norman plays a mustang in the Sparky's dream music video. They've been known to use a rat, and there are vintage fuzz tones all over the record, which I suspect are old fuzzfaces.
My all time favourite band. Grateful to you Adrian for doing this tutorial. For other new guitarists, The Concept, Start Again and Ain't That Enough are other great TFC tunes to dig into.
Grand Prix and Thirteen are two of my favorite albums ever and this is one of the best songs. Unfortunately when I saw them last was when Gerry had just left the band and they didn't play any of his songs. It was only then that I realized that he wrote most of my favorites.
I bought the vinyl single and cd album at the time. Always reminded me of The Who's "Pictures of Lily" with a pinch of Crosby Stills & Nash . Brilliant lesson thanks 👍
From Television to Teenage Fanclub. Awesome. You are an absolute four letter word. (!) I wept for joy watching this…I f*****g love this channel.❤And you can sodding well sing.. I give up.😂
They were pretty big in the U.S. Spin magazine named Bandwagonesque the best album of the year (better than Nevermind and Loveless) in 1991 and that got a lot of us interested. I’ve followed them ever since. You have the best taste of any guitar teacher/channel on TH-cam by the way. Thanks for the lesson!
Love it! You consistently feature tunes by my favourite bands as well as stuff I didn't know I needed to hear. I'm a big TFC fan so am really happy to hear this little beauty. They may not have been huge outside the UK, but Bandwagonesque was named album of the year by one of the US music papers (Wiki tells me it was Spin), somewhat notoriously ahead of Nevermind.
@@runtiferus The music editor of Spin who chose it as record of the year was Steven Daly (ex-Orange Juice) from Glasgow, so he may have been slightly biased! It's a superb album, although my favourite TFC record switches between Grand Prix and Songs From Northern Britain.
Bravo! Great song, great album! Power pop classic! One of the best albums of the 90s. Never tried to play but I'm pretty confident I can, thanks to you! This was right up my alley! Thanks!
I have a siouxsie and the banchees song that might be interesting to look that though it might be too difficult to try figure out what's going on. It's called Voodoo Dolly, it's the final track from Juju and its honestly one of my favourite because of the guitar. Don't worry if you cant do it, it is very difficult to figure out. Love the amazing work you do. Keep it up!
Your vocal at the start was amazing, have came back to this video a few times to listen to it! If you have the time at some point a full cover would be class!
You always know what I need whether I like it or not. I wasn’t familiar with this piece but see the value in working on my rhythm with a good chord progression workout like this cut features.
Absolutely freaking out over this, been dying for channels to give the fannies their time, and this song in particular I have struggled so hard with figuring out both guitar parts for. Happy to see I was about right. More fannies please! Would love to see About You or Alcoholiday done justice. Any ideas what Raymond does during the chorus though? Watching live he seems to be up higher on the neck, maybe just doubling with different chord voicings? Ray's a master at adding interesting complementary guitars. Back in the day it looks like Norman used (mostly) his 335 into a Vox, usually with a boost for natural overdrive, and Raymond used a Jaguar into Fender amps, usually with a Rat for distorted tones. I'm not sure if this track (or album, really) gets all that dirty, but that was typically their set up.
Great tune and lesson. Here in the states they never really broke through, but their first two albums were really big on the indie/alternative/college music scene. They kind of petered out over here after that because the later records didn't get radio play and of course back then you had to lay out some cash if you wanted to hear something that wasn't getting played on the radio and buying an album that wasn't getting any airplay could be risky.
Well Adrian, first I listen to your excellent cover of a Gerry Love classic & I echo praise for your singing too. Then I go back to my autographed CD of Grand Prix (signed under the stairwell of Leeds HMV). Please cover more songs from it.
definitely Grand Prix, amazing record, from a great band. Working out their stuff can be tricky, often the chord voicings are the result of twin guitars, one with a capo, one without.
I really can't thank you enough for this! Of all of my favorite TFC songs, this is absolutely my very favorite. I have been wanting to learn this for quite a while now but just haven't taken the time to do so. Fantastic breakdown, as usual!
As for chasing the TFC guitar tone. There's some consensus that a VOX AC30 with a Rat pedal for distortion is the ticket. On my fender mustang modelling amp I use the vox amp and a blues driver or a rat and it gets very close. The tone is part of the secret tfc sauce in my view. Both gritty (sparkly) and melodic at the same time. It's that sweet and salty mix that helps make this record magic.
I'd heard of this band before but never heard one of their songs. This has an excellent bassline to it also. Will listen to some more of their stuff now. Elements of Duane Eddy's Peter Gunn there too.
❤️❤️❤️ 🙏🙏🙏 I saw TFC several times here in France, I was a fan since Bandwagonesque ! They were a bit known thanks to the music paper Les inrockuptibles and our "french John Peel" Bernard Lenoir on France Inter.
Very impressed by your choice of song, in many ways the definitive Teenage Fanclub track (though some fans might argue for The Concept or Everything Flows). It's in the same key as another TFC song I've been trying to get right on guitar The Cabbage and which has an unusual chord that I could never get right. Maybe you could bless us with that song next? Cheers.
thank you always, but thank you a bit extra. even if i already worked it out i'm sure there's something better or easier and just nice to hear good songs played well!
Hi adrian, love your channel, greetings from Argentina. Do you think you could make a video about the song Beauty Trip of television? good song, pity there are no covers or tabs of this one :( love u
Whole of grand prix is ace. Creation had so much oasis money that they could allow their bands great production budgets, which this album deserved. My bloody valentine however spunked away so much money that they nearly broke the label. Great though loveless was.
Using this great lesson to play along with the original, there is something astray between the album version tuning and standard tuning. Any thoughts, anyone?
Is the guitar in standard tuning (I know some of thier stuff is at 445Hz)? It doesn't sound right when I play along in with the track in standard tuning).
I'm going crazy looking for the tuning reference, I've created the backingtrack with Moises but I can't make it sound right to me. I tried to tune it by ear but I can't. If you find the tuning reference, please share.
@@ToniFustel I tuned up from 440Hz to 445Hz and it now sounds in tune with the record (had to do the same thing for The Concept and some Oasis songs as well...makes the sound a bit brighter).
I had the original vinyl copy once. I sold it. Bad decision. I never thought the album was great though. The singles are very strong, but the rest is a little underwhelming.

The tone of that Jazzmaster is to...live for! Fabulous vocal performance too!

Could agree more Dunsy. Personal Fannies Fav probably everything flows
A quick vote for Neil Jung. Thanks Adrian, this is a fab lesson, the vocal picks out the Fannies use of harmony too
The Mighty Teenage Fanclub at last!!!

Can we do a Teenage Fanclub song every week? 😂
How great that Norman has taken the time to reply. Great lesson too.
Great song choice & lesson. The chorus always reminds me of Pictures of Lily by the Who - which would be another great song to do a lesson on.
