I hope what everyone takes from this video is that LeBron's stats may not reflect a difference in most years, but it is seen when you watch the games. I realize some aren't perfect comparisons and I address that in the video. It seems like many of you are commenting things without understanding the message or watching the entire video. Just want to help ensure the original message is coming across. Thanks for all the support everyone and please watch the whole thing before making judgments.

2014 is when he started coasting the regular season. Stats cant really support it because a Lebron thats not really giving maximum effort is still going to get 25 and 6 and 6. Lebron mostly try's harder on defense in the playoffs and will play more aggressive when it matters.

    1. Each team starts to play intense defend in playoff, which makes any player harder to score.
    2. Lebron starts his ultimate defending skills.
    3. Making the big shots in the 4th quarter and through the last couple of minutes.
    4. Controlling the pace of the game. This is very important to a team.
    5. Attract the defense so his teammate can have wide open shots.
    6. When Lebron is on the court his teammates feel more confidence and want to follow his lead.

LeBron just doesn't try on defense in the regular season anymore. And that's because the last time he did it in the 2013 season, he and the Heat came very close to losing to the Spurs and he saw Wade start to really have more knee issues. In the playoffs, he turns on his defense and attacks the basket harder. Other than that, he does not play at 50% for the entire season. He also will take more shots if needed in the playoffs and picks his shots better. That's about it. Playoff LeBron simply plays harder on defense and attacks the paint more/harder.

  • @swoll1980

Everybody needs to have a mindset: You have to take on Lebron once in the playoffs if you want to get to the finals. Do you prefer staying in the east, where you meet him in the earlier rounds? Or go to the west so that you meet him in the finals? That's the choice all these contenders need to make.

  • @Ascendment
    @Ascendment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

He plays a lot more aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends in the playoffs and brings that energy which you don't really see on those stats. You are also comparing his reg season stats to his playoff stats when the level of competition is night and day, especially in the finals. What's impressive is how close he keeps them even topping them in some years, so yes he is definitely flipping the switch otherwise the drop offs would be way higher.

Very interesting and pretty cool stats to prove that theres not much difference. Numbers don't lie. But...what would be interesting is the numbers against those teams he played in the playoffs also. I mean their numbers in Season vs Playoffs. Perhaps some insights could be gathered there? There is a mental switch that he and perhaps the team "turns on" but as your stats show...its not markedly different...in many cases, even goes down. But they are there in the Finals and they've won a championship. So very very interesting to look into. Thanks for this info.

Nice analysis!! @Basketball's_Best - Because playoff basketball is when team's get serious on D, teams tend to score fewer points so maintaining a similar level production effectively means you're contributing more? Would be really interesting to 1) add an analysis on points scored per team in the playoffs vs season to prove the point? I suspect you'll see that Lebron contributes a bigger proportion of the teams offense and maybe even defense? 2) wouldn't it be interesting to see if any all-time great players can evidently outperform in the playoffs to prove that there is a switch?

  • @echomayerkutz
    @echomayerkutz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

this is just my theory as to why stats don't really change much: if he was playing a regular season game against an eastern conference team, which as you said is much worse than the competition in the west, with the same mind sent and mentality he does as if he were in the playoffs, his stats would be much more significant. But when he is in the playoffs playing against much better competition, those teams aren't going to allow Lebron to score as easily as he would playing an eastern conference team, hence why his stats are staying near the same in the playoffs.

In the playoffs, LeBron would become more aggresive. As the result, defenders would start helping off of their assignment, which are most of the times great shooters. The more LeBron attacks the basket, the more 3s the Cavs are going to get. Defensively, LeBron would focus more on passing lanes and getting interceptions as well as chasedown blocks. These plays can be a huge momentum boost for his team, and it demoralizes the opposing team. The LeBron playoff effect is just ridiculous.

First, his defense is better in the play offs (watch the stats of the players he is guarding), second, competitive teams are guarding him more in the play offs cause there is an higher motivation to win and third the Teams selected in the playoffs are the 16th best teams of the league. So the challenge and the defense are harder

The difference is the defense which actually does show up on the stat sheet.... More blk/g 5 years in a row more spg 8. And as you saw more rebounds every year but 2008 where it was the same.
In dbpm Lebron since moving to Miami lebron has averaged 3.7 (top 5 nba level) in the playoffs since moving to miami. And 5.4 since moving back to Cleveland (highest dbpm last 9 years is 5.6 for a season). Lebron in the regular season it's only 1.9. This difference is rare. Most players are similar in playoffs. Like Kawaii 2.6/2.6 or Jordan 1990-1998 is 1.0/1.3.
On-off seems supports this as well. So far in 2017 Defense per 100 possessions Cleveland with lebron 23 pts better playoffs/2.3 reg season. In 2016 it's 8.5/2.6. In 2014 10.6/-2.1. Those are huge numbers (Difference from best to worst defense in nba is 9.7)
Also, making the finals every year means playing the top teams. If you adjust for opponents his playoff win % is better almost every year.

eh, I still say there's an eye test he passes that stats don't measure. Also for his four years in Miami he was splitting a lot of the stats with two other perennial all stars if not future hall of famers (Wade for sure, and I'd say Bosh too but that's the one some may debate). It was only the last three years LeBron was truly THE leader of his team, and as your stats show, the last two years have been when "Playoff LeBron" has had the most significant showing. And the thing that makes 2015 stand out the most was he was the only guy on his team that could create a shot in the Finals, which would translate significantly to increased stats for himself. So, I don't know if your stats show his affect on the game as much as they show the affect of his teammates on his stat line.

Why are you comparing season win% to playoff win%? It's obviously much harder to win a game in the playoffs due to having only the top half of the NBA compete.
Let's say that the average team that reaches the playoffs has a 60% regular season record. The average playoff record of a playoff team is obviously 50% because every game has a winner and loser. So the average team can expect to drop 10% in win rate in this scenario. If you maintain the same win rate during the playoffs as the season, you are playing better, not at the same level as you did in the regular season.

anyone who plays in the playoffs knows that you have to step up your game.
The playoffs will expose you for who and what you really are.
If your skilled, how high your bball IQ is, or if your a hamburger.
LeBron is certified approved in the playoffs.
Here's what he does better than most in the playoffs and Finals:
He makes pin point accurate decisions on what to do with and without the ball.
That was Jordan's specialty that set him above the rest.
The other player that comes to mind is Magic.
LeBron's bball IQ is up there with the likes of them.
    Decision making.
Even the Mamba I can't place in this category because he put up too many errant shots, made some emotional costly shots, and just bad shots overall.
Plus he hogged the ball a little too much in the playoffs and regular season.
So this is my belief on what happens to LeBron.
His decision making becomes better in the playoffs.

About 2/3rds of the way into this video, you acknowledge that the level of competition is higher in the Play-Offs. But before that and after that, you seriously downplay this VERY important factor. I would have given you a thumbs up otherwise (particularly because of the fine work you did on listing the comparative stats).

what your video fails to convey is that putting up lebrons regular season stats IN the playoffs its 10x harder... because the competition tightens up..

NO competition in the west cause there are multiple 50 win teams, but there are better teams there to be considered elite
THERE is competition in the east due to less 50 win teams, but there are barely any teams there to be elite
dont get confused by the difference

Okay let's be real here, aside from three teams in the west, golden state, spurs and rockets... what other teams are actually any good in the west? It's a top heavy conference. Why isn't golden state getting the same criticism? They are currently smoking their western competition! Oh I see it's cause they are really good. Not because the teams they played are bad. See this logic!

how is the west stacked? in the last 20 yrs, lakers went to the finals 7 times...spurs 6 and golden state 3 that means 4 other team squeaked in against the wests powerhouse teams (spurs/lakers) since 1999. its not stacked, its got its powerhouse as well, golden state will make another 3 or 4 appearences, so much dominance equates to competition how?
