i saw this movie after seeing the outsiders for the first time in 6th or 7th grade and developing a little crush on young c thomas howell (fun fact he plays george foyet, the boston reaper, in criminal minds) and i remember this movie so vividly it definitely feel surreal to see someone else finally talk about it !!
Great show, great flick! Unfortunately, The Hitcher is NOT a date movie! "Because I cut off his legs... and his arms... and his head. And I'm gonna do the same to you." In fact, this is the very flick that first started my litmus test on whether it is a date movie or not. After taking my girlfriend in high school to see this, I noticed it was exactly the same result as when we went to see Starchaser: The Legend Of Orin. That's when I figured it all out. If they (the filmmakers) maim, rape or kill the main chick at any time in the movie, it isn't a date movie because your date will think you're weird for taking her to see it. If it's a first date, she won't feel comfortable being alone with you later. (If I had kids, I'd give them that pearl of wisdom.) Of course, I'm talking about 'good' girls. Women who actually thrive on those dark, senseless kinds of torture-porn flicks either want to murder their grandparents for crack money or bury their kitten alive to summon demons or something else odd and terribly wicked. In The Hitcher, if he would have saved the girl, that film would top my list of date movies to see. It has all the other elements to get a guy laid -- except they killed the chick. Now when checking out a potential date movie, I always ask, "Do they kill the chick?" Truly, I think the movie is really wonderful, but I'd never take a girl to see it. It also works the other way too. Tank Girl isn't a date movie either. Neither is Moulin Rouge or Titanic or any of that dark twist-ending crap because tuberculosis or drowning in an ice bath is just as bad as being gutted by a psycho killer. An American Werewolf In London is another example of a great movie that isn't a date movie. I could go on all day... What good is having a final girl if there isn't also a final guy? Yeah, I know I'm old fashioned, but I also know for a fact that seeing Forbidden Planet will get a girl to put out more than watching I Spit On Your Grave on any day that ends with a Y. The potential lovers in the given flick don't even need to kiss. They just got to end up as a couple with all their limbs attached and their 'virtue' intact or nobody's gonna score. Unless she slept through it or something. I mean, I'd rather take a girl to see My Dinner With Andre than have her think that The Hills Have Eyes was something I wanted her to know about. Actually, I once wrote a whole book with the date movie test as a theme. It was a three-thousand page film critique of why we need more happy endings from Hollywood so we can get more happy endings in life. Movies like The Hitcher are really, really great, but if you pay twenty bucks in a theatre and take someone you want to hook up with, make sure the movie is going to help you along the bases instead of getting you fouled out because the chick gets ripped in half by a tractor-trailer.
