Hammock Camping Alone at Yosemite's Vogelsang Lake

- Once again I'm up in the Tuolumne area of Yosemite and I'm on the Rafferty Creek Trail. During this trip I'll plan to camp at Vogelsang Lake, which is a beautiful high elevation lake south of Tuolumne Meadows. I made a pretty big mistake of forgetting and leaving an important piece of camping gear back at home, but I was still able to spend the night and enjoy some beautiful high elevation scenery and wildlife.
Hope you enjoyed, thanks for watching!

Great job Cody! This is my FAVORITE XL Outdoorsman video yet! You did a great job of sharing your experience in an honest, entertaining and educational way! I've always said it's not an adventure without a little adversity andd/or blood, and this one's got it with a sorta-planned bivouac at 10,000', DARN COLD/NO TENT/NO SLEEPING BAG/NO SLEEP! This video comes with all the "now expected" clips: how to get a last minute backcountry permit, a cold water stream dunk, camp set-up including the luxury CHAIR (LOL), another DELICIOUS PEAK MEAL dinner, wildlife sightings, amazing scenery, and successful fly fishing with lightweight Tenkara fly-rod. What an awesome spot to experience such SOLITUDE! I applaud your respect for wilderness regulations and the natural environment!
It's been about 30 since I was at Vogelsang. I recall one time with my friend Jeff J. who had a serious case of ALTITUDE SICKNESS. His heartbeat hit 240 bpm while resting in our tent at 10,000' and we had to pack up in the pouring rain in the middle of the night and head to lower elevation!
So proud of you for pursuing this passion of yours and sharing! Dad
the Timelapse is awesome 15:16
That high country camp waa cool! Its crazy to me that kinda stuff exists in the middle of nowhere.
Daddy goes hiking. Nice video.
Absolutely Beautiful!!
Loved the golden sun on the mountains and lake. Gorgeous!
Yes, golden during dusk, and I was up plenty early to see the calmness of the lake during dawn. Really pretty spot
I did a four night backpacking trip in Yosemite high country. I left my cook pot, stove and coffee cup in the car. Thank goodness for cold soak option, which got me through.
That's a rough one! At the end of the day, calories are calories, but you can't beat nice warm meal in the back country. Hopefully the bears left your car alone!
I remember hiking to vogelsang from Tuolumne meadows and it certainly felt a lot longer than 7 miles.
Routing it on Gaia GPS says Vogelsang Lake is 8.1 miles from the Tuolumne Wilderness Center. The metal signs that the park service puts at trail head/junctions are usually pretty accurate, so I'm curious where they measured the 6.3 mileage to. "Tuolumne Meadows" is pretty vague I suppose.
Hiking so quickly you'll be speedrunning soon
As long as there's still time to look around and enjoy the views, I wouldn't mind getting in better shape and hiking a bit faster
Great video and remarkable ingenuity in layering to keep warm.
Thank you! Putting my feet in the backpack kept them nice and warm
Huge new video!! Love the trail progress with relive app
Thank you! And yes the ReLive app continues to be a popular feature in the videos, I love it
Hey man...watched you at Fresno State protecting Derek Carr! I'm from Clovis Ca...hopefully see you out in the wild one of these days! Subscribed.
Awesome, those were some great years! Hope to see you out there too
Cody can you introduce us to some of other back packers and where their from it will also increase your views a lot they will want to check it out
I really should. Nearly every trip I strike up a conversation with a fellow backpacker/hiker. They are always interesting chats, I just need to get more comfortable with filming other people/strangers (with their consent of course). I'll give it a shot soon
Lovely scenic trip X.L! Didn’t know that you played pro ball. Very cool! Besides videoing and family what else are you doing? Happy to see you do some fishing near the end! Take care!
I finished playing ball in 2020 and since then I've done some traveling, did some coaching for our local high school basketball team, and have been spending a lot of time with my little daughter. Recently TH-cam has kept me plenty busy, so I've been enjoying that. Thank you for watching!
@@XLOutdoorsman Thanks for responding! Appreciate your channel and the effort it takes in bringing it to us!
Looks awesome there, love it👌👍
I highly recommend!
Nice video l watcy you from Saudi 🇸🇦 ❤

Great Content!
Thank you!
Great job with the video. You’ll build a strong following in time. I’ve dropped all the channels that have unfortunately turned into nothing but product advertisements and endless preaching and advice. (I know, grumpy old guy)😂 looking forward to your next trip.
Thank you! A little better every video release. That's the goal
Which is worse, tons of mosquitoes or no sleeping bag?
I'd say no sleeping bag. Getting a cold and bad nights sleep in the backcountry is no fun. Mosquitoes can be dealt with the correct clothing, spray, and head net. Great question though I had to think about that one for a minute!
Why did you comment that you were 100 feet from the lake? 11:00
In Yosemite National Park you must camp at least 100 feet away from water sources. Mainly streams, rivers and lakes. There are a few reasons why, but I think the main concerns are water quality and letting wildlife access the water sources without having to go around campsites.
