  • Ever needed to import videos into your Unreal Engine 5 scene? In this video, I show you a short and simple way to accomplish just that using the NEW Media Plate Actor in Unreal Engine 5.1. In addition, I also show you how to import files with an alpha channel, as well as get realistic shadows and photoreal reflections from your Media Plate Actor to further cement your video files into your scene and take it to the next level.

    IF YOU STILL CAN'T GET A SHADOW TO SHOW UP TRY THIS:
    Double-click the material as I did in the video and then go up to the top. You should see a button that says "Hierarchy". Click that drop-down and then click "M_MediaPlate". Now you should be inside the material editor for the Media Plate Actor.
    Now, from the blue Media Texture Node, drag the Alpha (signified by an "A" on the bottom right-hand side of the node) into the "Opacity" and "Opacity Mask" inputs in the "M_MediaPlate" output node.
    Here's a link to my material setup if you would like to copy it: imgur.com/a/gpJsrak
    SORRY I FORGOT TO ADD IT IN THE VIDEO LOL NEWBIE MISTAKE!
    I HOPE THIS HELPS!

      Hi James. Firstly, thanks for the tutorials, they're very helpful and concise. Though I'm having an issue whereby I render out my sequence using the render media queue, and I'm noticing the shadow from the image sequence I'm using doesn't animate correctly. I have an image sequence mapped to a plane with alpha which renders without issue, however, the shadow doesn't animate along with the image. It kind of stickily tries to follow along but gets stuck. Any advice on what the cause may be?

    @MultiMam12345 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video. Quick and to the point🤘🏻 Regarding to video playback. You gotta consider codecs. MP4, MOV, AVI are just containers. Your used codec and resolution of the video container is usually the reason for less performance. 3 videos using h264/h265 is heavy on cpu/gpu because it’s a delivery codec and it needs to decode while playing. 3 video’s using a videocodec that supports alpha or a Image sequence is gonna be less heavy on cpu/gpu but heavy on the disk you are playing them from. So if you use a 1 h264 video as a backdrop, your playback performance will go down hard. Just avoid delivery codecs and use a fast caching drive.

    • @JamesLuke
      @JamesLuke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing - this is extremely useful information. I def need to do more research on codecs in general haha. Gonna be testing this a bunch more on my Batman Beyond project, so thanks so much again! Saved me some headache lol!

    Trying to learn UE5 for vfx with Blender for a feature I am working on. Man it is sooo frustrating. Starting with UE5 to do an animatic storyboard with script reading as the audio. Run into the MiP problem. Went into bulk editor to reduce textures from 8K to 2K and 1K, still got the message. So deleted my landscape. Recentered all actors, cameras assets to 0.0.0 location. So will have to start again from scratch with a smaller landscape, I bet it was too large.

    Hi, very useful staff here, thanks! I have a problem with the video quality which I drag into the scene the character is pixelated when making movements, I tried green screen MP4, and EXR files with alpha channel but the result is the same. The interesting thing that in the UE 5.03 I had not this issue, only in the new 5.1. The other thing is I wonder how to apply color corrections to the imported video like brightness, contrast, saturation? Any idea?

    • @JamesLuke
      @JamesLuke  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting... I've never heard of that pixelation problem, let alone encounter it haha! I would say it could be the resolution/codec of your media, but since you said you didn't have this problem in UE 5.03 I'm not sur ewhat the issue could be. Is it pixelated when you render out in movie render queue? If so, it might just be a bug in 5.1. That's the only thing I can figure, tbh :(
      As for color correction goes, I'm actually still in the process of figuring that one out as well! Right now my current workflow for that is a bit roundabout, but I've foudn it gets the job done. Here's what I do:
      I take a screenshot or render out a quick clip of my environment, then I impor that into After Effects where I place it *behind/under* the media I want to import (ex. green screen key). Next, I apply all the color correcting effects I need to in AE to match the bg clip I imported from UE. Then I delete the bg clip and re-render the green screen clip WITH all the CC effects applied to it. Then I drop that in UE as a Media Plate Actor and boom - my keyed footage is now color corrected to the scene.
      Like I said, a bit roundabout and super inefficient and I'm sure there's some way to do it natively in UE (or better in general), I just haven't found it yet. If you (or anyone else reading this in the future) finds out how, please lmk!

  • @ukmonk
    @ukmonk ปีที่แล้ว

    Does anyone know how to get the images to be affected by the lights in UE please? In Blender images as planes, the images are affected by the world lights, so they cast shadows and if for eg, a red spot light is shining on them, you guessed it, they are illuminated in a nice red glow :)

    Rad! Can you do a video on color correction on the PNG seq in unreal? Also... Will 24 fps at 1080 work fine? I've done 4k 60 fps and it is SO SLOW to export a sequence in After Effects. Whats the recommended frame rate if there is one?

    • @JamesLuke
      @JamesLuke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! As soon as I figure out how to do the CC in UE5 myself LOL!
      24fps 1080 should do fine. Depending on your machine, it'll run smoother than 4k for sure. 4K obviously will give you better resolution, but could be slower in the viewport. It'll be fine once you render in Movie Render Queue tho!
      As for slow export in AE, that could potentially be bc of the specs of your machine. 24fps is usually the rule of thumb for all video tho, unless you're doing slow-mo. I don't think Epic Games has a specific recommendation for the fps of the sequences for the media plate actor.

      Actually, after trying your recommendation to @DigitalStaff, at least in my case, if I hook RGB of the TextureSample directly to Base Color of M_MediaPlate, apparently there is no need to reroute RGB to Multiply and then Emissive, and no need to modify the specular. 🙂

      Hmmm... Try this:
      Double-click the material as I did in the video and then go up to the top. You should see a button that says "Hierarchy". Click that drop-down and then click "M_MediaPlate". Now you should be inside the material editor for the Media Plate Actor.
      Now, from the blue Media Texture Node, drag the Alpha (signified by an "A" on the bottom right-hand side of the node) into the "Opacity" and "Opacity Mask" inputs in the "M_MediaPlate" output node.
      Here's a link to my material setup if you would like to copy it: imgur.com/a/gpJsrak

I got this problem that in 5.1 they are not updating in real time (only if you move camera they are updating) so when render it in sequencer they are not moving appropriately either. In 5.0.3 I didnt have this bug and wondering if you have the same or am I missing something

      Interesting. I've never encountered this. In my limited testing, the shadows moved accordingly. Have you rendered out the sequence using Movie Render Queue? If so and the problem still persists, I honestly am not sure what the issue could be. Potentially a bug with the new MP Actor? As of now, rendering using MRQ is the first thing I think of trying.

    When I create a new image media source, drag it into my project and push play on the project it stays black with no video image, pushing play in sequencer does the same. I am using MPEG-4 footage. Also changed physical materials blend mode with no effect. Lastly what level type would you recommend creating an Environment for specifically this. I figured it out.. they did not plug the alpha into the Opacity Mask on the new default media material so when you change it to mask, it has no alpha. I just made a new media parent material and put the alpha out of the image sequence into the Opacity Mask to make this work.

      @@dxlphdayana8360 Ah! Those are a custom parameter node setup I made.
      Press 1 on the keyboard and click at the same time. That'll create a constant. Basically just a number. At the tip top of the node, right click the little arrow and click "convert to parameter". Then in the panel all the way to the left you can adjust the min and max values. I usually just do a min of 0 and max of 1. It varies tho depending on what you're doing. If you want more emission you can always just crank it as high as you want. Then I search for a "multiply" node and plug in the RGB of whatever I'm wanting to emit in the B input and then the constant/parameter that was just made in the A input. Then I take the output of the multiply node and put that in the Emissive Color input in the material.
      That should hopefully do the trick!
