A few months ago I discovered that alternating between a more serious and a lighter book (usually a history book and a fantasy novel) makes me read both faster and I enjoy them more. Good to hear that I'm not alone in this :)
That's a really good way of going about it! Especially with me and having ADHD, it keeps me from resenting the book I'm reading because if I'm bored I can just read something else
I'm a new subscriber and exploring Ancient Greek Religion through my research of Hekate (I'm very new to witchcraft). I gotta say that our reading styles are so similar! I have a ton of books I start, some of them fictional non-research material books that I enjoy reading, and it's really validating to see someone else have a similar approach to research and reading as well! Also your videos on Hellenism are so good!! Really great information and properly researched. You are underrated.
THATS WHY YOURE THE FIRST PERSON THAT EXPLAINS IN A WAY I CAN UNDERSTAND, OUR BRAINS WORK ALIKE!!!! ( i am adhd too and i started to study helenism a few more years than i am proud to say so, not because i am ashamed of the subject but i am ashamed of not being able to understand alone for years. till found your channel i used to say that faith and religion are like a willy wonka's golden ticket: people claim to have found and seems pretty happy but i've never got the lucky to even see a shadow of it, but i feel now so in peace with all this knowledged like it is finally what my soul was seeking and believe i've tried more than ten differents paths and beliefs . anyway this a huge mega blaster thank you for existing and sharing your knowledged with us. hugs, cassie, from brazil 💗🔮
This was such a great video Fel! So useful and your honesty with your experiences of researching and reading books was so grounding for me haha. I have a hard time retaining all the information I read and I constantly flick through books on my bookshelf without reading every single word! Cycling through books really helps my reading capabilities honestly yeah, as you said, because it helps avoid that burnout or feeling of boredom. Your channel is far too underrated!!
Yay video!!!! I finally got ac oddessey and playing the non fighting and non mission mode is helping me so much in both visuals for my fantasy book as well as spiritual journey! Love your videos!
I love your realistic approach so freaking much. I have to tell ya- you're loved ma'am. Please never stop. This subject is so hard to get modern day knowledge on.
I super appreciate all of this advice. The problem I am running in to a lot currently is the inaccessibility of a lot of texts. I am legally blind so usually seek out audiobooks, non photo copied digital texts so the text size can be enlarged without blurring the information, or digital texts that come with or are compatible with text to speech programs. I’m finding that both in terms of occult and academic fields sources with any of these options can be very hard to come by. Do you have any suggestions for finding accessible texts or have any recommendations for audiobooks or accessible texts you have used?
hmmmm I can definitely see how that would be difficult! Honestly, I would recommend reaching out to Classics professors or other students to see what their thoughts are because the schools are legally required to provide accessible texts, so they must be out there somewhere 🤔
This sounds really annoying to deal with! if i may, i recommend checking with your local library, as many if not most libraries will have accessibility options or even online access for things so you can download audiobooks through there without having to pay! I hope this is at least marginally helpful because boy does it sound annoying to have to try and find an accessible copy of every book!!!
I love how relatable your content is. Reads book: "Woooooow! I've never known that before!" Weeks later rinse and repeat. Yes, same. 100% have done this. It's hilarious when my friends are like.... Um, you told us that like last year... Whuuuuut! I knew a thing? Haha
ok so: I am a Hellenic practitioner and I'm currently doing a degree in classics and this is a *really* good video! Encyclopedia Britannica and *especially* Wikipedia get so much flack even tho they're actually really good jumping off points. I would never recommend them as a final source, but as a jumping point? GREAT. Those little blue [#] tags? THE BEST. Theoi too, despite having some recent less-accurate blogs, is a really good summary of a lot of things, as well as having a library section with translations of original texts!! Also yeah, deep-diving into sources is my favourite thing, I do it a lot, but just bc a claim is made in a source (or even just because I can make and back up a claim) doesn't necessarily mean it's accurate - I had an actual professor recently misconstrue sources about debt slavery in Ancient Greece and it was a huge yikes moment. There are different schools of historical thought *everywhere* - not all of them are as well backed up as others. Love the shade at the three Big Names lol (Arthur Evans especially, I have so many gripes with him. Can't believe he got knighted ;-;). I'd also like to note Will Durant - I got his Life of Greece secondhand recently and OH BOY there's some stuff in there. Especially if you're looking for Minoan information, you really want to go post-WWII sources as much as possible coz they didn't even figure out the Theran eruption until 1939, so you'll find a lot of confusion lmao. Sorry for the whole essay. TLDR: love this video. It's only your second one I've seen, bc I found you through someone recommending your Deipnon video, but I'm definitely going to be looking forward to seeing more when I have time.
Never apologize for whole essays haha! I love them! And I think I've seen in you in a couple of Discords 🤔 I also love those little blue tags they are really just *chef's kiss*. Yeah Theoi has some interesting blogs but I tend to ignore them lol I love love love their plain text library. They've even got all the fragments in a well organized place. Ooof yeah, it's YIKES when professors misconstrue information. That's why I always remind people that scholarly =/= 100% accurate. Especially from an older time period (though there certainly is yikes modern scholarship, too). That's also why I encourage people to disagree with me! People forget that history is not such a rigid field, things are constantly being reexamined and reconsidered. I've not heard too much on Will Durant (other than his existence) but I'll make sure to keep a wary eye on him. And yeah, so much Minoan stuff is really......out there. The early Minoan ""archaeologists"" really messed up a lot of that scholarship (and dig sites). Thanks for the thoughtful comment and feel free to chime in on anything else!
I recently went on TikTok and looked up hellenism. A bunch of videos was people saying that they have been working with hades etc. what exactly does that mean. How can you work with a god?
TikTok is...an interesting place. "Working with" is more of a modern pagan term that specifically is about involving a deity in witchcraft or spellwork. (Although theurgy is kinda like that as well, which is historical) I personally don't use the term and say "have praxis with" (because it feels more specific to me in hellenic polytheism), but people use it quite a bit, so you'll see it a lot likely.
8:33 A lot of older occult books are in the public domain: there's no extant author or publisher anymore. That's not to say there's no hexes or anything eldritch though. 🤭
If I can’t find an occult book, as in purchase it; I’m gunna hit up an archive, that’s just how it works. As a priestess, I highly doubt I’m going to get hexed because I couldn’t find a place to purchase a book or because I’m dirt poor 🤷🏻♀️ Sure it might be impious of me, but ya know, in the pursuit of knowledge to please Athena because of an oath etc etc Maybe I’m just lucky and haven’t run into one with a hex
Definitely hit up an archive! And as I said, I definitely don't think academic texts are at all the same as they come from large publishers that usually don't even give the authors the money. When it comes to small authors though, in my time I've personally witnessed small occult authors lose their livelihoods, it also disproportionately affects authors of color, queer and working class authors. I've seen them quit the business all together due to plagiarism-and when their books aren't sold, already underprivileged authors have publishers refuse to give them another book deal and their knowledge is lost. ((What's great about scribd is you can keep doing free trials on different emails and the authors still get paid their full revenue 😉))

Very good that you address this topic. Not familiar with the inference problem myself but just had a different experience in university.

Also, audiobooks are the only way I can read because of my reading compression disorder. I was an English major, so that is how I figured that out!
Glad you found a reading style that works for you! And I love AC Odyssey haha, very beautiful game.

Actually, I think you're among the most serious and respectable academics on TH-cam.
i would absolutely love for u to make a hellenic holiday/festivals video 🥺
A Fellow Circus Person!
Appreciate your framing on research so much.
I missed you so much! I was searching for your next post and I am so happy you posted this.
I'm glad you enjoy! I post videos every other weekend. I try to post on Fridays, but depends on how busy I am

This video is great!!!!! As someone new and looking for ways research this video was so helpful!!
I love your channel keep up the great work
I have a question on the books! is the Greek Religion by Walter Burkert one of these books that you shouldn't read via PDF or library websites?
I would like Nyx video
Keep going forward.
